Description:
Drakonis: This is my "Ember-Rekindled" piece (original can be found here), with Ziti's beautifully relaxing guitar caressing the flames. I am delighted and in awe of where he took this... the kind of music that, like that perfect friendship, you wish could last forever. Thank you so much Fran!
Ziti: When I heard Ember, I fell in love. These dreamy, sad pieces are a favorite of mine, and Drak's piece had guitar parts hidden in it. It took me a few tries, but i got them to pop their heads out. I tried to make the guitars live comfortably within Drax's sweet bed, but they bubbled over a bit, but I think the feeling of vague unnamed sadness is maintained. Thank you Drakonis for this gift.

Ah, it's so airy and colorful. Excellent addition, ziti; the guitar reminded me of Adrian Belew's playing at the end of "Ballet for a Blue Whale". And that soundbed is extra sweet. Nice going guys! [ Reply to This ]

This is just so beautiful guys! The original was great, but
always seemed to be missing something - not any more.
How do you explain it when an instrumental brings you to
tears (but not necessarily in a sad way)? I really can't say
much more, an absolutely perfect ambient piece.
Wonderful playing as usual Fran.
Brilliant!

Amazing! &mdash 09/17/05 - 05:45:17 AM
Hi Neil,
Thank you for stopping in (even before breakfast!) to listen to this, and get
swept away. This is the ultimate compliment to me, to have the music reach
deep inside you and stir up feelings. That happens to me with a number of
(classical) instrumental pieces, and it is what I have strived to do with my
music too. Ember has been getting close to my "voice", and I was honored
and then left in awe when Ziti offered to "try some stuff", and came up with
this... as if he had read my mind, as I'm a sucker for the bluesy dreamy
sliding guitar. I think the two voices compliment each other nicely and evoke
some powerful emotion, just what I wanted to do! Thank you again for
sharing our vision.

Finger picking good! &mdash 09/16/05 - 05:04:13 PM
Bravo guys! I must say, to my ears, this is a completely
different song. Drak & Ziti, you've warmed up that cool,
damp cavern. Smoke trails still linger long after this is over.
I'm really impressed. Ziti, you've added a slight Jeff Beck
color to this. It's funny how different instruments can send a
song through a time warp: Modern ambient electronica to
Pink Floyd. Okay, okay, if you insist... faved! Great collab!

Finger picking good! &mdash 09/17/05 - 05:59:59 AM
It is funny, Ziti *swears* he's not listened to my favorite Pink Floyd Album "Wish
you were here", but I heard strong Gilmour influences all over this... but then
he's introducing me to Jeff Beck, whom I'd sort of forgotten about somehow with
my head stuck in the Floyd.
Glad you liked this so much, he did indeed alter the mood of the piece, but not
the intensity, he puts so much into this. It really fits well.
Of course, you know what version of Ember I'm waiting for now? (evil grin)

I have enjoyed pink flloyd when i have heard them. It sounds like spacey
blues to me....but I can honestly say I haven't heard the album you refer to. I
did however listen to a 2 cd live set that was very nice. In my earlier years, I
spurned most rock music of the day for blues records. I hardly listened to
zeppelin, hendrix, the who, or most of the rockers of the day. I loved Jeff
Beck and still do. Peter Green, Clapton, Santana, Larry Coryell, Mike
Bloomfield and the Allman Bros (DUANE IS THE MAN)... were the rock guys i
listened to. I like zep alot now and hendrix's blues playing is monstorous to
me. But my love of all styles of guitar playing has grown over the years, and I
listen to and enjoy any kind of music presented with passion. Guitar is such a
universal language...the hours I spend playing one are my prayer time. As
hard as I have worked at it, it has never been work for me to play guitar. It
ALWAYS brings me to a spiritual place...even if I only pick it up for a moment
to limber my hands or practice some scales...I am transported..... [ Reply to This ]

yes, a lasting friendship is another gift.
I listened to this today, after it was posted and I have to
say, without fear of sounding big-headed, that I felt very
proud. I have long dreamed of playing this style of music,
but it just isn't possible in a club...specially a blues club!
I LOVE this style of music, and when I listened to this song
as a post, I finally heard it. I could even vote on it without
feeling awful!! (I mean how low is that??!!) but I really don't
care!. This piece, (as well as the other collabs I have done)
are gifts that will remain with me for the rest of my time.
They are like invitations to visit an exciting new friend in a
mysterious location. And this piece is a very beautiful gift
indeed.
I knew it was right after your first listen, when you
noticed the same little koto style lick I played that I had
liked, the lick that made me save that performance...all
the guitars center on that little lick. You recognized it too.
This is a great composition, Drakonis, and as i said, all the
guitar parts were already there...you just forgot to make
tracks for em! And I feel proud!

Again,
thank you for working so hard on this, perfecting it, removing the parts we
agreed didn't work, and keeping the parts I loved... we won't let on to everyone
how much work you put into making this (as I told you) "sound effortless." But it
really seems to just glide you off to that vulnerable place so easily. You have a
great talent for evoking emotion with your guitar, and I appreciate you offering
to enhance my piece like this!

This is lovely... And, harping on my usual themes, I bet it
will be "headphone candy"... Reminds me at once of some
of the dreamier Hendrix, more thoughtful Knopfler a little
at times, touches of Pink Floyd/David Gilmour...
Yeah, I can hear the Adrian Belew in there, too...
And I mean all comparisons to be compliments, taking
nothing away from the originality of the piece... Nice
sonorities, to borrow Rich's word...

thoughts from the bull... &mdash 09/29/05 - 06:06:21 PM
music that can evoke mood is easy enough to create, even by an
amateur; but music that can evoke emotion - real, true, honest
emotion - is extremely rare and, i think, a difficult task. this piece not
only plays on the heartstrings in a nostalgic sense, but it forced me to
look forward, nostaligically, into the future as well... that may only
make sense to me, of course! hehe
this is my kind of "kitchen" music. my after-dinner-cleanup music that
i can simply let wash over me, and as the mess becomes less and the
countertops become glazed with the scent of lemony cleaning
products, the music finds itself at home.
a lovely, moving piece that i very much enjoyed and appreciated! thank

Lovely Guitar, but a little too much. &mdash 10/03/05 - 08:27:47 AM
Mimicing some of the comments already made.... the piece has a very
nice, relaxing, ambient texture which the guitar fits in with very well
most of the time (the guitar squeals arn't exactly in place in my
opinion, but I like them anyway).
However, I believe the guitar became too dense, far too quickly. The
impact of the guitars was eventually lost because not a lot changed
throughout the piece. In my opinion, I would've really enjoyed it if the
guitar playing was a lot sparser in the beginning (Only one guitar,
slowly and infrequently) and built over the course of the piece. This
would have the benefit of the guitar not 'bubbling over' the ambient
texture so soon and by the end of the piece it would be plainly
intentional.
Another idea might be that the guitars don't fade out with the ambient
texture.... maybe they fade out after, or just stop playing after a little
time after the base texture. Because of the current structure and how
the fades are done at the moment, makes it sound to me as if you've
cut in and out of a piece... and we're only hearing the middle section.
Other than that, nice work the two of you, keep it up. [ Reply to This ]
What MacJams is all about &mdash 10/13/05 - 11:36:29 AM
I'm not up to the challenge myself of making something worthy of drak's evocative backdrop, so I was very happy to hear this collaboration. I read The Composer's comments and can understand his perspective, but for a contrasting opinion, I thought it had a nice "jam" feel to it, where Ziti really sounded as if he were responding to the backdrop and letting his playing express his emotional reaction. You two are well matched and should work together again! [ Reply to This ]
