Description:
"The origin of the song 'Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes' is not known. It does not appear earlier than around 1770. The words are Ben Jonson's poem 'To Celia', written in 1616. According to the Oxford Companion to Music, the tune cannot be traced back beyond about 1770. 'Best Loved Songs of the American People' states the tune is sometimes attributed to Mozart, but that there is no verification of the fact. Sir Walter Scott used the tune for a song 'County Guy'. The tune has also been credited to Colonel Mellish. However, that is unlikely as he is believed to have been born in 1777. Grattan Flood asserted that he had seen an edition of the song dating from about 1803 with Henry Herrington of Bath (1727-1816)."

I would love to thank to Richard for letting me participate on this truly lovely song. I actually think it should be posted under his name, but he was so very kind and let me to put on it my label :) so thank you very much rich, it was such a fun to "create magic" together :) And another person I would love to thank is Ed Hannifin (Ejh), who helped us a lot with his guidance in getting as close as possible to a "folk period" sound.

Lyrics:
Drink to me only with thine eyes
And I will pledge with mine.
Or leave a kiss within the cup
And I'll not ask for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine;
But might I of Jove's nectar sup,
I would not change for thine.

I sent thee late a rosy wreath,
Not so much hon'ring thee
As giving it a hope that there
It could not withered be;
But thou thereon did'st only breathe,
And sent'st it back to me,
Since, when it grows and smells, I swear,
Not of itself, but thee.

Pavlina: I was truly inspired by your lyrical interpretation
of this time-honored song, both in your freely flowing
vocal counterpoint and your melodious recorder solo.
Thank you so much for your magic. You have proven that
you are a fine musician.

But Pavlina, you took this song in a direction I could never have imagined. I'm
sure it is your rich European cultural roots at work here. Such passion and
power in your lilting voice and recorder! I am learning from you! I mean that!
More!

First off... &mdash 09/19/05 - 05:04:00 PM
...hats off to your lyricist....

I love your two voices, and I think you have done a
beautiful job intertwining them here... Rich, I think your
relaxed vocal style brings the heart of the poem
forward...Pavlina, your pitch, phrasing and musicality are
really exceptional.. It takes something to match vocals
with Richard...

I also love the recorder, and find it is just right...

Richard, the only thing I'd still nitpick here would be
getting the timing even tighter on the acoustic guitars... It
may be standing out for me just because I'm listening over
headphones again...

The SOUND of the tracks is both clear and full...

Nice job, you two...

Ed

Wait a minute. Just read the text. Thanks for the thanks,
but you guys are overstating it by even mentioning it...
The pair of you went the distance with this tune all by
your lonesomes...

Ed: sometimes advice is hidden between the lines. You put this question to
me via e-mail: Ejh wrote: "Course, it doesn't matter what I think so much as it
matters what you think? You like what it's sounding like?" I realized at that
moment that I didn't like the sound at that stage ( http://www.schletty.com/
pk/DTMO_Pav+Rich_05.mp3 ). My voice was, in your words, "too
declamatory, not too conversational". I re-recorded my voice on Sunday
morning. I also received a beautiful recorder solo from Pavlina that I was not
expecting and proceeded to remove my harmonica, guitar soloing and MIDI
percussion in an effort to make the instrumentation lighter and more lyrical.

Here was another key comment by you, Ed. I hope you don't mind me sharing
this: Ejh wrote: "The recorder is much more in keeping with the 'period
piece' feel of this than the harmonica... although the harmonica playing was
quite nice, better than most harmonica I hear... The recorder also seems to be
sticking to pitch pretty well, which not every recorder recording manages to
do... I am not missing the percussion. Remaining beefs? If it was my song or
my track, I would go back in and slide the acoustic guitars and align them
strictly to the bar lines... chopping them up as need be... I am listening under
headphones, and there are points where the guitars are just slightly
fighting each other as regards time, and anything fighting is a distraction...
You want folks listening THROUGH the arrangement right to the spirit of Ben
Jonson... nothing in the way..."

Ed, I did chop up and nudge the guitar pulses quite a bit. I can spend more
time doing that. Ed, you do need to take a deep bow. You really helped the
artistic and technical processes.

I remember this being one of the first melodies we learned to
play in beginner band and it's really stuck with me through
the almost 30 years since. The two of you do a lovely job
with it. Very nice. Love the recorder.

Ceilidh, I love the way you skew your singing & harmonize
with Richard, you have a wonderful voice... very nicely
sung, both of you. Richard's backup guitar was great, but
one of the standouts was the beautifully played rich-
sounding recorder. Very warm and romantic song.

I guess I have a bit of a soft spot for this song as it was
one of the first art songs I learned in university (I had
never sung art songs before then). Brings back memories
of a whole new world of song being opened up before
me...

This is a nice presentation of this song, too. Your voices
blend well together, and the recorder is a serene and
beautiful addition.
Congratulations on a fine collaboration :)

Lovely collaboration &mdash 09/23/05 - 08:45:37 PM
Yes, this is quite an evocative piece for many. Which made it challenging for us
to interpret in a fresh way. My first experience with this song was Paul
Robeson's rendition. I more or less delivered out the melody as written but
Pavlina made it so wonderful with her weaving improvisations.

This is so pretty, like a hymn. Or a Christmas carol /
timeless love song. I love the history lesson contained in
your description. Thank you. That this song is so old yet
sounds so vital and alive is very neat. I say this not so much
to honor thee, but to say do not wither in time or under the
weight of days. Keep playing!

EdensEve: I appreciate your beautiful expression of gratitude and
encouragement. I choose not to wither or bend under the weight. You
are so close to the truth it is scary. I just got done seeing a French movie
(with subtitles) called “Les Choristes” (“The Chorus”) written by
Christophe Barratier. Quite inspiring. Art vs. impoverished
spirits.

Pavlina, I sure hope you sing more often here and just
don't make only a few tunes. MJ sure can use a sweet
singer like you!

This kind of music really seems fit your singing
personality Rich. You have a perfect voice for this type of
folk material. You also do many other styles of course and
do them well. It just seems this kind of style was made for
your voice quite nicely. I love to hear you singing with a
lady of this high of a caliber of voice.
Nice going to the both of you.

All aspects of this song are very good, Great guitar and recorder. Excellent production.
I'm assuming you two just bumped into each other recently here at MacJams. It sounds like you've been singing together forever.
Seriously, I think you two should look for similar songs and explore duets with each other.

I don't think &mdash 09/23/05 - 07:08:39 AM
That's right...we just bumped into each other in the Chat Room a few weeks
ago. Pavlina (ceilidh) was asking, "How do I make the magic?" A few other
MacJammers and myself told Pavlina what buttons to push in GarageBand and
this song is the happy result! We intend to make many more songs together.

Keeping the music alive &mdash 09/23/05 - 09:26:31 AM
I really appreciate it when people keep certain music alive, music that is
overlooked yet deserving. Your setting of this is very nice. And your liner
notes are superb. The recorder instrumental is a great touch, just the
reverb to evoke the era. I like the pronunciation between the two of you,
like England (well, you get what I mean) and Europe touching hands. Very
sweet.

I have been into folk music all my life, coming from Newfoundland, Canada. I spent much time in Nova Scotia playing in a traditional Celtic band and this track took me back. One thing I miss the most was the collaboration with two beautiful female voices. Your voice reminded me of them.
A wonderful and honorable interpretation of the song.

I played in a group called Drimindown. I played bass and bodhran and vocals. We did mostly 4 part harmony The band name came from a song we did about a cow stuck in the mud!
We never did the Celtic Connections Festival but we made the circuit round Nova Scotia quite a bit.
