Description:
Monteverdi is the clearest reference for this short piece I wrote as melody and numbered bass. I was looking for a software instrument as near as possible to the theorbe or archlute, and I found the Jam Pack 4 Harp quite enjoyable. Of course I would have omitted my voice if I could find something more fit...

Lyrics are the first fragment of a short poem by George Seferis, maybe the most distinguished greek poet of the '900 (Nobel prize 1963 - http://nobelprize.org/literature/laureates/1963/seferis-bio.html).
His poems are often of difficult interpretation, and this one is no exception. Stay on a long time with his verses if you want to discover their poetry.

Lyrics:
Sopra un raggio d'Inverno

I.
Foglie di latta arrugginita
per il cervello gramo che toccò la fine:
radi barbagli.
Foglie prese in un vortice
coi gabbiani eccitati dall'Inverno.
Come un petto si libera
si sono fatti rami i danzatori
selva immensa di rami denudati.

------------

On A Ray Of Winter Light

I.
Leaves like rusty tin

for the desolate mind that has seen the end:
the barest glimmerings.

Leaves aswirl with gulls

made wild by winter.
Like a chest gets loose
have become branches the dancers
immense woods of naked branches.

permodum pulchra est - clara monteverdiana memoria - solum armonia docet, nullum atrum de seculo nostro - alterum tibi dicebo

Good choice of poem selection.
Normally I do not listen to classical voice - the only examples in my
collection are a version of Arnold Schnberg's Pierrot Lunaire and some
Kurt Weill / Bertolt Brecht works. I'll show my ignorance here a bit - this
sounds in its form, pacing and general melody very much like something I
would have heard in church 40 years ago - before the Vatican Council II
ushered in the era of acoustic guitars at mass. Your voice is very pleasant
to my ears - not strained. The mix is good - both the harp software
instrument and your voice sound like they are in the same concert hall,
perhaps with a sense that the mic on the harp is a little closer than the
mic on the vocalist - but it's a good balance. Well done.

I'm glad you appreciated the various choices that brought to this. You rightly
rest your attention on the mix...I was a bit unsure on this regard, and I agree
that maybe the voice could come out more. I liked too much the lower notes
of the harp, and I decided this balance on behalf of the instrument. Now I
would rebalance a little.

Well...as far as church music is concerned...I would dramatically start a
deprecation of actual horrible musical nonsense that is plaguing the so called
"sacred" music. That would bring us far, and maybe it would be a pointless
diversion. Pah!...enough!

Pierrot Lunaire is far more elevating. "Der wein den Mann mit Augen trinkt..."

Thank you for stopping by!

So refreshing!! &mdash 09/26/05 - 06:27:14 PM
Thank you for posting this. It is beautiful. Your voice fits this well. If
you ever need a classical female voice, I'd love to help! (Don't listen to
my song posts for reference...they are not a representation of my
actual training! I did study classical voice and would love to return to
it!) Anyway, nice job!

Thank you sincerely for your kind appreciation and interesting proposal. The
versatility of your voice is sensible even in the restricted repertoire you posted
here at MJ.

You're too kind. If only I could forward the compliments about this song to the
two actual authors...Seferis and Monteverdi. They jammed and collab'ed in my
brain, I think. One is played by his own music, sometimes.

Listening to this again....I love the 'bare' simplicity of it. (And yes....isn't that
JamPack 4 harp a great instrument? It's perfect for this piece, and well done.)

Once again....beautiful.

bouncing...week end rulez!

What a voice, but to put that kind of backround makes it fantastic!

Your an inspiration!

I needed that after some hectic moments today!

Thanks! Really! :)

Just discovered this, and wanted to say (a) you sing very well; no need to
apologize for your voice, (b) yup, you've captured a Monteverdi feel, and
(c) you are lucky to live in a country that has produced so many of the
greatest musicians and composers throughout recorded history.

Good work here.
