Great re-mix.
This is one of my absolute favorite songs from you Alimar. I loved the
original , but the changes you have made in here are really good, It seems
to tighten everything up. Love the intro.
Fabulous.......

Good Architecture &mdash 09/27/05 - 10:00:24 AM
This is the only version I've heard and am especially hit by the clarity/
room each element has in this mix. It is both complex and spare with
fantastic balance throughout, though the pause over the bass line
mystified me.
Masterful presentation. [ Reply to This ]

RT, the vocals over the bass mystify me too... but there was something about
having it that way. My muses at play? Thanks for the comments.

Nice rework &mdash 09/27/05 - 11:17:40 AM
It's been a long time since I heard the original so I don't recall exactly
what's different, but this sounds great. I like the intricate keyboard parts
playing with the more easy-going and smooth vocals and other parts. It's
lush and warm. I love the whistling... wonderful!
Personally, I'd make some lines or verses just single voiced and not use
the big harmonies the whole time. That said, the harmonies do sound
really nice. [ Reply to This ]
Nice rework &mdash 09/27/05 - 09:55:39 PM
Thanks, PG. Schletts said the same thing when I first released it (about the
harmonies). I guess I wasn't comfortable with my solo voice at the time... and
didn't feel like singing a new lead this go around.

harmony is overused. &mdash 09/27/05 - 09:24:28 PM
I think the harmonies are great but because they are used throughout the
song, it becomes less dramatic. In this case, the rule is that sometimes
less is more. Reserve the harmonies for bigger parts or it begins to lose
its appeal. Still, a very solid song. [ Reply to This ]
harmony is overused. &mdash 09/27/05 - 10:19:49 PM
Virgil, you are absolutely right. When I first released this song, the harmonies
were an issue. I wasn't very comfortable with my own solo voice... so I
disguised all the bad notes in harmonies. When it came around to re-
releasing it, I didn't have the energy to sing a stand-alone lead, which I
believe should break up the content as you, and many others have stated.
Thanks for the comments. They are much appreciated.

A song like this &mdash 09/27/05 - 11:53:39 PM
just touches my heart.
This is the sort of expression music was made for, because it goes
beyond the technical this-or-that to the meaning, the very soul, of the
music.
And, in that way, it's just perfect.

I've always been rather fond &mdash 09/28/05 - 06:05:53 AM
of the harmonies throughout the tune. They give it a British Invasion
feel that makes a nice connection to the father's youth as he reflects on
the relationship. Kinda miss the harpsichord in the middle but this is
OK too. I guess sometimes, one just gets used to a particular version
of a song.
BTW, until Dadai corrected me as to the subject matter of this tune, I
had assumed it was about running into an old flame and catching up. It
still works on that interpretation I think, but as a father of a teenage
daughter who has just left the nest for an internship, I think I now
prefer the subject matter as intended. [ Reply to This ]

Snow, the original was a celebration of my daughter turning half my age and
me turning twice her's in the same year. A one time happenstance for 50 and
25. It was written as her birthday gift, and posted on her 25th birthday last
year. Thanks for the positive comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the first
version, and now this one. Get ready for the song you write your daughter!

Hello Alimar &mdash 09/28/05 - 11:30:50 AM
I've never heard any of your song before this one, then again I am always
late in and whit everything. This is a very, very good song. I haven't
heard the original of course, but there is so many pleasant surprises in
this song: a very different and fun opening, a very catchy refrain, the
whistle (not such a different instrument but often forgot), the keyboard
parts, the bass break (I love this one in particular), the ending vocals...
This is very tight. Thank you.

those harmonies &mdash 09/28/05 - 12:33:06 PM
is so good - and it is the signature of your work. Your style reminds me very much of Gilbert O'Sullivan, and there is even a bit of Queen in here.
This is a good piece worth some re-runs. Haven't heard the first take, but I feel that the vox is a tiny bit to high in the mix and that the song would gain from a re-mix where they where blended in a bit...Or to put it another way - I like it when the bass and kick drum punch me in the stomach when the volume is cranked up a bit...:)
Maybe we should do a collab so I could stand up for my critique and squeeze that bassguitar a bit together with a drumgroove and even an angry fuzzguitar. Lets top it with a harmonized guitar solo like Brian May could have come up with:)

Thoddi, I'm glad you feel interested enough to want to add to this. Maybe
next go around, your's, and several other's suggestions may make it worth
while to complete this into a marketable song. Thanks for the comments. I
will consider your offer.

As I listened... &mdash 09/28/05 - 01:08:14 PM
I couldn't help, but think how cool it would be for you to do a soft
version of this song... that said, I still love this one. One of the
best from you, in my opinion, I do agree about the harmonies...
could use some mixing up, some solo, perhaps some builds, I
also get the feeling your vocal performance is stronger then you
think.
New intro is fabulous! Kinetic with a hint of silent movie western
happening. [ Reply to This ]
As I listened... &mdash 09/28/05 - 01:45:44 PM
PackO... thanks for giving it a dissective listen. A lot of great suggestions
have been made, and I am trying to convince myself that my voice just might
stand alone, without being disguised with effects. The former critisisms of
the MIDI guitars kinda forced me to create a "prog" intro based on the hand-
over-hand keyboard technique used on the intro to "The Lamb Lies Down On
Broadway" and "No Reply At All", by Genesis. And that pseudo "harpsichord"
part just seemed so... "Harpsichordy-light". Thanks for the kudos.

Again &mdash 09/29/05 - 12:56:11 AM
Alimar, You never cease to amaze me sir. This is another great piece of
work that you're sharing here. I haven't paid as much attention to your
vocals before as I have on this one..., Pretty amazing vocal stuff. You
sound very comfortable and relaxed...Your singing, it comes across as
being effortless, and it does sound a bit more polished.
I thought that this one had nice song structure, as all of your tunes do,
this one kept my interest up, and gladly so.
Nice arrangement throught out. Very, very professional. I liked that this
one had a softer, more plush and a less edgy feel than the earlier
version. Certainly, your efforts continue to pay off.
Excellent piece, Alimar!
You inspire me

Cyd, I always appreciate your comments. You have such an articulated sense
of commenting. Thank you for your confidence in me and my compositions. I
had plans of taking voice lessons, but things just kept getting in the way.
Now, if I can only learn to play the keyboards and sing at the same time.
Thanks for taking the time to comment.

another improved track! &mdash 09/29/05 - 09:13:22 AM
Al, I think it's great that you're going back to rework some of your
earlier material. It's as valuable an enterprise as submitting something
new, for sure. You've learned a LOT about mixing and mastering over
the past two years!
I definitely like this version better. The new intro really COOKS! That
quick, energetic piano lick adds a perfect spice to the mix.
The vocals sound tighter now, and warmer. The overall balance of this
track is excellent.
Great job, Alimar! [ Reply to This ]

Thank you, Cam. It's good to hear from you again. I hope your stay at home is
a productive one. I appreciate your taking the time to relisten to this song.
I'm glad you like the new arrangement. You really think the intro "COOKS"? I
was afraid of the whole "MIDI" can of worms as I was debating whether or not
to include that piano.

The bear has "absolute power" over anything else. There is no need to
apologize (there is a forum post for that). I thank you, Caroline, for stopping
by and having a listen... and leaving such favorable comments! The season is
changing here, so there is less "mowing" than usual. You have the advantage
of that wonderful garden, and a neighbor with a similar garden. You are very
kind and generous.
Once again, I thank you.
