... All GB SOUNDS. I bought some of the GB sound libries. they are cool. they even won a bunch of nerd tech awards for the a couple of the discs. I didn't make the sound flip. that would be cool. It was probably that way or close to it and I ran it through the auto filter to make it float more. I worked in voice over studios in Frisco back in the 90's and got my ear trained for mixing. GB is a great program if you have engineering skills and a good ear. Thanks for checkin the tracks out. Check out my latest song called So Sweet

It took years In '88 I went to the Collage for the Recording Arts in SF. I knew nothing about the recording process. I just knew that was what I wanted to do. Its kinda funny cause I made the natural transission from DJ to producer before it was even spoken on. After CRA I got an internship at Starligt Studios in Richmond CA. I interned on sessions with one cat that was engineering on sessions for Envouge, Tony,Toni,Tone, and Digital Underground. I interned on the first DU album. (never met Pac). I actually picked up how to make beats and mix from those sessions. Shock G had a really good ear and knew what he wanted and could communicate it well to the engineer. That was the most muic studio stuff I've done. I worked in a voice over studio for 7 years. That was where I was able to get the after hour studio time. My first gear was an EMAX II with a whopping 22 seconds of sampling time in mono. ($2,500 bucks) and an Alesis SR-16. I had a 16 track line mixer with only higs and lows. In '97 we added in a K200 from Kurzwell. So i learned how to work with what I had. But I would just work really hard to make the tracks sound like they were mastered. I generally spend anywhere from 2 to 5 days to make a beat, but it's gonna sound sonically correct. I would love to hear what some of the 10 tracks a day guys beats sound like. It's just been a long learning process. Right now I only work in GB for music. I have Reasons and Mac Five, But when I opened GB, it was so easy to manip, I never even bothered to learn the others. I know of at least one major label hip hop producer (Rockwiler) who uses GB. I don't know if anything has hit the market yet cause he hasn't been shouted out by anyone lately. I usually work and mix in headphones (Sony MDR 7506) When i'm happy with the headphone mix, I bring it up on my Mackie HR824's and level a couple of things out. headphones tend to make you make tracks bass heavy and sometimes the sounds you want low and not too noticeable are lost on monitors. So the monitors help me make sure thats all cool. The one thing i think i learned that i do to this day that makes my sound is "subtractive EQ'. Instead of boosting what i want out of a sound or sample, I cut what i don't want. it words well. but you need to be careful not to have a big dip in your mid range. I like to use compressor/limiters alot as well to control the sound. I try not to compress the final mix much, mainly on the sounds that need it. I guess the bottom line for me is i tried different eqs and fx, and made sure I could hear what was going on when I tweeked them so i would know what i would even need to use them for. Plus hip hop is all about doin what you feel so running a sample through a bass amp for a different sound then eqing what I want out of that new sound, then run it throu chorus or something like that is how I work. thats why it takes so long for me to finish a track, there are so many possibilities. I don't play any instruments. My roots are sampling. but GB is like a big sampler. Just drag, drop and chop. You kno grab a piano loop that is midi, edit out what I don't want, or change it into a horn, whatever works. My ears have deffinately gotten better, even over the last year. I've been doin beats since 1991, so its just been a process. thanks for checkin my tracks out. Check out my latest song called So Sweet

wow, thats quite a story thank you, that was very helpful. i wish i could reply with something like that. i will definatly conciderate your EQ tips because that is my biggest problem. it never seems to figure itself out. you are right about GB, it is so easy I never tried any other one. i will keep making beats and keep learning. peace -WERD Check out my latest song called YO 808 vol. Cool sounds, good production - would love to hear vocals on this one.
It cries out for some lyrics - it's a great setting for a good voice.
