Description:
Ed’s comments:
I am listening to the final mix as I write this, and marveling… Over headphones, as I am listening now, Curry has crafted a whole landscape of guitars for this song to live in, and I am very satisfied…
The song itself:
I think that for many of us who experience lonely moments, the first impulse is to do “something…anything” to get out of it, be it just lonely, or lonely-plus-angry, or lonely-and-sad, or some other flavor… and to think that, “something must be done!” This song came out of the first time that I saw that it might be wiser to just stop, stop running, let it all just be… One of those life lessons that I have learned and lost and re-learned through the years…
The production:
The vocals and my guitar came from old BR-8 tracks, cleaned up a little in GB and shipped off to Curry… who then added lovely guitar and shipped it back to me…who then had to admit that I couldn’t come up with a mix that I liked…back to Curry, who then did a most painstaking mix in Logic Express… you really have to see some of his screenshots with volume curves and edits to realize the work he put into this… Curry then posted FIVE versions of the mix, from which the two of us agreed on this one…
And then, of course, Curry put together the graphic…convincingly enough for my son to ask when Curry had come to visit and why had it happened when he, thepeep, was not home…
Curry is an amazing person to work with: patient, thoughtful, considerate, funny, tasteful and kind-hearted, and of course musically impeccable.
Curry, thank you with all my heart….
Currys comment:
I think this song by Ed is JUST LOVELY. Enough said about that. Now I want to give you a story from our collaboration instead. As you can understand it has been super nice to collaborate with Ed, but also sometimes little of a gentle adventure.
Early in our collaboration we discovered that I, with my probably longer Mac experience (Mac user since 1988), could help Ed by showing some of the many neat things build in to OS X and other things we needed to have working.
Then, one day, when I was working on adding lead guitar in Logic and had all the sound tracks like a puzzle over the screen, I wanted to feedback Ed of how things were proceeding so I mailed him a screendump of the Logic project. Quite soon I got a reply from Ed:
Curry,
I keep clicking on the Logic Express screen you sent, BUT IT WON'T PLAY!...
(You really did chop things up, didn't you?)
What do you reply to that? Probably he was joking and my answer should have been haha or LOL! But what if he WASN'T joking? ... that would have been quite rude an answer ... but then, what if I would give a pedagogical answer telling that it was only a picture?... that in turn would have been to underestimate his intelligence if he after all was joking ... and it would have exposed some lack of humor from my side too...
I didn't know what to do, so I replied nothing about that matter...
Later I had another mail from Ed:
I am now reading the Apple Pro Training Series book on Logic Express...
Still can't get that picture to play, though...
It's really impressive, though.... All those slices!...
Ed
I became like in a cold sweat ... What had I done? Will this poor man be spending days trying to force that terrible program so he could be able to listen to what I had done so far?... shit ... How could I be so stupid ... I should have told him directly ...
So what to do? I pondered over it for a few minutes, then - with a feeling I wanted to tell it in just small letters ... or in a very very small voice - I mailed him: you cant get the picture to play ... it is just a picture..
Next reply from Ed:
Curry:
I was joking...
Phew! So I found out that this man has a little fox behind the ear, as a swedish saying goes. Translates in my dictionary: he is a sly fox, or “wily bird”... (hope it has the same friendly nuance as in swedish use). Thanks for a great collab Ed!
Lyrics:
The Kind of Lonely
Copyright 1988 Ed Hannifin
Capo: 1st fret
[Intro]
When you have to be alone
When companions are a curse
When pity drives you wild
When comfort makes it worse
There are days in every life
When the certain isn’t sure
And there are some kinds of lonely
Only lonely cures
When you know it can’t be helped
When you know it’s yours to bear
There are friends that you could call
But you don’t want them there
You’ve got no truck with the coarse
No patience with the pure
This is the kind of lonely
Only lonely cures
Perhaps it’s in your mind
Perhaps it isn’t real
But you need time for sorting out
What you know from what you feel
[Break]
When you’re bleeding deep inside
When it’s a self-inflicted wound
When you have to help yourself
When you have to do it soon
Like a falcon angry at the sky
That will not take the lure
This is the kind of lonely
Only lonely cures

Thanks, Bill!
I'm pleased to see you appreciated the stereo mix... credit to Curry on that
score... I know I always say this, but this is a mix that's really headphone-
friendly...
I'm also glad that you liked the singing. I REMEMBER singing these tracks,
and, weirdly enough, how hard it was to sing the first line well. I'm glad that
quality you're calling sweetness came through...
As for pickin': well, I think I managed to keep my thumb more or less in time..
.EVERYTHING ELSE is Curry doing what he does with the acoustic guitar,
which is awesome...
Thanks for listening right off the bat, and commenting, too!

very nice sounding and wonderful folk song.
Great guitar sound and the vocals are sweet and relaxing.

wonderful vocals and lyrics accompanied by superb guitar playing...great collaboration and production...reminds me a bit of Johnny Cash, Neil Young, and Brian Ferry...comforting to hear these words from a professional shrink (I think?)...do you prescribe this to all of your patients? :-) but I suppose with singing and guitar picking skills like yours, you can cure any patient [ Reply to This ]

Mikki,
'sweet loneliness' is a great phrase... I think you get the heart of the song...
I'm thrilled that you like the lyrics and the singing... getting compared to
Cash, Young and Ferry in one breath is pretty cool...
I think the curative powers reside with Curry... I get a lift when I hear his
playing, in any case... picks me right up...
I'm glad you listened to this, and liked it...

Ed, when you mentioned you were working on a song with Curry, I
think I congratulated you on your taste - the proof of this pudding is
certainly in the eating! Lovely song Ed, and well sung.
Curry, your playing on this is up to your usual standard, but I am
especially impressed by the production. These are some of the
cleanest multiple guitar sounds I think I've heard on an MJ production.
Just realised the potential mixed metaphor here leading up to a curry
pudding - hmmmmmm!
Anyway, congratulations on the result - a fine piece of acoustic folk
music.

Great line: "There are some kinds of lonely only lonely cures." Perfect line
to build a song around. Excellent guitar work, simple yet full, always right
on, so nice. Great folk track. And there is something about sharing
loneliness in music that burrows deep and widens life, somehow. Smiling
from the deep alone knowing others know. [ Reply to This ]

Tobin, I think sometimes that I short-change you in my mind, categorizing
you
as one of the guys with a lot of sophisticated technical/musical/professional
knowledge...
And all of that is true, of course...
But then you also have a capacity to feel the emotional heart of a song and
respond to that as well, which I really appreciate...
Thanks for your warm comment....

Ah crap &mdash 10/04/05 - 09:32:55 AM
Thanks a lot Snowey! Glad you liked the guitar work, and you point out
something I've been a little worried about; that the guitar-joy of it is an inch to
much and maybe overriding vocals somewhat ... but at other times I can view it
as a play, an experiment ... In a sharp situation we would have been able to have
all tracks mixable and not only the lead guitars. The thing is; in this occation the
back-up guitars (swell made by Ed) were on the same track as the vocals so
there was no way to mix guitars down.
Yes, I like the idea of lowering the bar ... we will probably try our best to do that
the next time ;) [ Reply to This ]
Ah crap &mdash 10/04/05 - 06:55:11 PM
Thanks, snowdragon... I think Curry had the "right worry" about the "guitar
joy" not overstepping the theme and lyrics of the song... but to my ears, that
drove his mixes, so that he ended up with a mix that has plenty of sparkle
and "guitar candy" while still being in support of the song... I continue to be
awestruck at all he did...
Hmmm. Raise the bar. Lower the bar. I think Curry's and my next
collaboration needs to be a limbo!
Let me rethink that...

WUMB-ready &mdash 10/04/05 - 08:31:11 AM
Send this right off to our favorite Boston folk radio station! ... Instant Classic! Everyone is right on the mark here, so it's hard to say anything without repeating things. This is a great collaboration and Curry did a great job adding in his part and bringing it all together. The song reminds me of the best of Boston Folk songwriting, up there with Dean Stevens or Catie Curtis, for example. Love it!
Minor quibble: it doesn't really rock, so I would classify it purely Folk. [ Reply to This ]

Catie Curtis..." That gives the intended meaning... [ Reply to This ]
WUMB-ready &mdash 10/04/05 - 07:11:01 PM
On the OTHER hand...
I've actually played live on WUMB... years ago...in fact, I think I did
'Marigold'...
my old boss Rick Cyge and I actually were on an old WUMB fundraising
recording
back when Tom Callahan and Stephen Bracciotti were on the air...
And I USED to know Dean Stevens... he sometimes came to the songwriting
group that my old partner Phyllis and I were members/cofounders of... I
spent
what felt like a year of my life trying to sell him a guitar before he went and
bought his Lowden... I was introduced to Catie, too, a couple of times...
And curiously, Wheatstone Bridge was on the "Best of Boston" LP from Fast
Folk Musical magazine....I think Dean was on that too, along with other
Bostonian types...
I know what you mean about the folk rock label being applied to things that
don't involve drums and bass, but I think I spent too much time around folkie
purists, too, so nowadays I tend to think of "folk" as being "traditional music
performed on traditional instruments in traditional ways". In any case, a lot of
people approach that category that way. And I dislike the "adult
contemporary" sorts of categories. I figure if early Jackson Browne and Steve
Forbert, or songs like "Mr. Tambourine Man" or "Helplessly Hoping", can be
considered to be "folk rock", then I'm not too out of place...
I tend to think of all these categories as approximations, anyway, and I guess
I just LIKE this one...
I'm glad that you enjoyed the song and the performance, Jim; your comment
got a very pleasant little nostalgia thing going for me...
Thanks,

I don't think this is actually a gender thing. I think this is a people thing. I
think getting through loneliness is pretty universal... I think Woody Guthrie
said, "The blues is just loneliness."

They say that... &mdash 10/04/05 - 10:38:08 AM
one becomes a psychotherapist in order to secretly work
through his own issues first and secondarily to help others
(I've a MA in Counseling). Add to that person the ability to
write and record beautiful songs. What is the result? Ejh. And Ed, your songs reflect something of the shared human
condidtion and experience. Songs that can even be
melancholy. Part of living life is laced with peronal struggle
and aloneness. Yet in this song there is hope:
Perhaps it%u2019s in your mind
Perhaps it isn%u2019t real
But you need time for sorting out
What you know from what you feel
When you%u2019re bleeding deep inside
When it%u2019s a self-inflicted wound
When you have to help yourself
When you have to do it soon
Why hope? Because everyone can relate. We are all there
at one time or another. Maybe then we are all not alone,
even when we are lonely and trying to sort it out.
I guess I am babbling on.

Excellent lyrics, Ed. Very thoughtful and poetic. I know exactly what you
mean about not fighting it, just seeing it through. Very touching. Your
voice is so full and clear; wonderful delivery.
The guitars form such a gentle, comforting bed. Played and mixed so
very well. It sounds like you were both playing in the same place rather
than remotely. Beautiful. It would be nice to maybe hear a cello filling in
the bottom, but that'd just be a bonus.
