Winter's Breath II (w/vocals)

Description
In many ways, this version of Winter's Breath is a return to operatic 'roots,' (both in listening to Richard Tucker arias/Gilbert and Sullivan light opera as a kidlet with my dad, and then singing/listening to opera in college--There was a LOT of listening!)

I had not created "Winter's Breath" in anticipation of adding vocals, though as I thought about the song itself, the title "Winter's Breath" became the inspiration for the text.
Whereas the name "Winter's Breath" had been give to the instrumental upon completion because the mood of the piece seemed chilly and solemn, "Winter's Breath" for the text became an ethereal personification of loss or betrayal.

My vocal approach was one of singing the lyrics freeform in a kind of dramatic 'recitative' improvisation, after which I recorded 3 tracks of ambient harmony.
Two of those tracks were set to AU Reverb "cathedral," placing them far in the 'background' while a lead ambient remained more forward in the mix.

(Thanks to Tom Atwood for being a 'second set of ears,' --for your many helpful listens, comments and suggestions on this piece!)

Lyrics
WINTER'S BREATH

In Winter's Breath
I roam the landscape
Cold and white.
And Solitude its bleak companionship invite.

Arising from Love's bed
Of green and dewy field;
My heart's pure constancy betrayed.
To Sorrow now yield.

I'll wander 'midst Winter's Breath,
Its chill embrace,
Its icy fingers with my own interlaced.

In Winter's Breath....Winter's Breath....

Magical
If you were a baseball player, this would be your highlight reel. Does
that make any sense? This piece displays so many of your talents: your
ability to go to the opposite field, handle the short hop and...wait a
minute. Oh well. Good luck in the playoffs.

Seriously, as I have told you, something happens in the last 1:30 of this
piece that I think is wonderful and truly exceptional. Excellent, Cat.

Magical
Thanks for that, Tom. Baseball? Hmm. Always thought I was waaaaay in the
outfield ;)
(Just don't tell me there are only 18 games left :P)

Seriously...thank you very much for your comments here, and for your support.
I'm learning a lot from comments and suggestions you give as I work on a piece.
Invaluable. Thank you so much!

Jack,
I always appreciate that *you* appreciate music, and what the composer is trying
to do. Sometimes we are more eloquent than others in our musical
communications, but I sense you listen beyond the notes.
Thank you for that :)

See? I shouldn't reply so late...Reading over that comment I realized I meant to
say that there are times we are more eloquent in our musical communications
than at other times....
(yeah...something like that :)

thanks, again :)

Magnificent
This piece fits perfectly together. Your voice is angelic.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think this music is pretty okay. :)

Love the tune
Sweet singin mysti!

What I like about this is that your backround was nice before but now you
add the warmth to the cold. To me, it gives the cold lots of inner feeling
and tenderness. Like the sparkly chimes. Thanks for your discription
about the singing in the backround. Like how you tackle hard subjects
such as cold. You hear plenty of summer songs etc. You have a lot of
originally willing to tackle beauty were some people think it's limited. You
go the extra mile and tackle hard subject songs and make it seem easy.

Thanks for sharing your percious gift with us macjammers!

Love the tune
Thank you, Tiler

There is something about the solitary or 'tragic figure' that lends itself to
'wintery landscapes,' and that theme is certainly continued here. But, yes...to
find a flicker of warmth or of hope--even if it's a flicker--is what gives that
character a sympathetic 'footing.' I purposely left my voice 'brittle' at the
start of this piece, but gave it more backing and strength as the song
progressed (perhaps the 'warmth' that you heard?).

It's interesting to hear another's interpretation of this song, so thank you,
again, for leaving your thoughts and comments here.

Winter wonderland
You've captured the delicate site of winter here with restrained power. It
gives me the shivers at times and warmly embraces me at others.
Beautiful.

Great variation on your theme
The voice and lyrics fill in the sparseness... but I liked the sparse
version too, for different reasons. So this is an alternate favorite of
mine (I can have two, can't I?) I enjoyed the way your harmonies
seemed to wander, then converge at the end of each phrase,
crystallizing the chord. Delicate and powerful, and faved again...
Catgrats!

Winter's Breath...
...gave me chills. As much as I loved your lead vocals, I think your backing
vocals gave the piece the cold, haunting touch it needed. Beautifully done.

True talent
I'm serious.
This is gorgeous, and this is not the first time I've said that about your
work, and without a doubt not the last time.
This is just what I needed tonight.
Wonderful.

I've only been around five months...
...and your posted songs have grown so much in that time...

The sureness, the combination of ease and control here, is moving all
on its own. Pitch is spot on, as it has to be to bring off those multi-
tracked harmonies and that icy lead voice...

The opening cadence is so almost-Gregorian, it's really nice, but then
it becomes its own choral thing...

Really like it, Mystified.

Fantastic track Cat
A consumate vocal performance really adds to the chill beauty of
the'Blade Runner' synth backdrop. My mum will love this too of course!

Aye, Elven Princess, Thine Archers are at Your Command
:D

Direct and logical yet unexpected in its freshness, your version delivers
delicate majesty.
I do agree with Tom Attewood ( :) ), the final is specially precious, while I
think the very first phrase, with its shortvalued notes is inappropriate, as
far as the following is in long notes. I feel here once more that the
renaissance praxis of starting melodies with long values and then
introducing quicker patterns afterwards cannot be eluded very easily.

Not sure how this happens
...But I do like each version, equally as well as the other. The first
version was a bit more chilly, and this is not a good or bad thing.
However, on the first one, I had just made it pass the phase of, sitting
on the edge of my seat while waiting foe the 'warmth of a Mysti's
breath'.

I love the way this turned out Mysti - Beautiful.

I can't wait to hear one of the other versions that are in lined outside
the studio, just waitng to be heard...

Thanks again for sharing Mysti. Very nice job w/ the vocals on this.
Now, I'm really getting intimidated...

I am completely in awe...
I am new around here, and was poking around in the hit picks list. When I heard this, I stopped and just sat with my eyes closed. You see, I'm a huge New Age freak (David Lanz, Enya, George Winston, Wyndam Hill, etc.) and I just love this. What I had been looking for for a while was something soft and gentle; almost all of my other New Age CD's had just a little too much going on. Enya has too many lyrics/interesting rythms, George Winston is almost there, with the ambient style I wanted, but I needed a little more to interest me, and David Lanz and Wyndam Hill both use piano/instrumentals which are great, but I wanted something more free-flowing. A few of David Lanz's songs are like that, but not enough.

This song is great. I love the etherial ambience you have in the background, and then your voice just floats on top of it, softly singing like slowly falling snowflakes. This is just spectacular. Definitely on my fav's list. THANKS!
