Keywords:
retro (22)noire (1)sax (55)guitar (860)
Description:
As often is the case with me I wanted to do something different, so I came up with this sort of "rock noire" tune. I knew a good guitar solo would work in there but it seemed too predictable, so I asked iG.STUDIO to record some sax accompanyment and a great honking solo. Well, he delivered.

Play it loud and enjoy.

Lyrics:
Blow it away
then we set it up again
Pull the hammer and the trigger
let the dinner party in
we set a killer on the loose
and she's feeding on the power emanating from the groove
You know the party's gettin' started when Honey's in the room

Set me a fire
let the juice through the wire
til it burns
til it burns
crank the furnace even higher
It's the last stop for you
the games will leave you bruised
You know the flames will rise higher when Honey's in the room

Honey likes to play
likes to rub it in your face
she's a dirty piece of work
smokin' lay lady lay
Well, the crowd they ask for more
writhing like snakes on the floor
You know the party's getting started when Honey locks the door

Cuttin' through the crowd
bleedin' kisses from her mouth
does it sting
does it sting
there's a killer in the house
You gotta glance from her eyes
Ashes to ashen goodbyes
You know that Honey doesn't leave until the party dies.

Sweet... &mdash 10/13/05 - 03:17:45 PM
... the whole song... but that tenor sax solo is soooooooo
nice. I especially love the effects. Very hip rocking tune, Peter.
That drving beat and your fine vocals highlight another of your
cool recordings. My hat's off. I'll be downloading this one
when I get home. Every time I hear Ilya play I want to ge out
and get a tenor sax again... money can't buy me love, but it
could buy.... : )
Kudos to you both.

listen.

Sweet... &mdash 10/13/05 - 04:40:44 PM
Ah yes. Choices... this or that? I have an iBook G3 800mhz. I am
eying a new iMac G5. But then I start thinking about just that! Maybe
go out and get a tenor instead. As I save my pennies and save my
dimes I go back and forth. My heart says the tenor sax because that
is my first instrument and what I used to play in a band. My head
usually says the iMac for a number of reasons. One of which has
to do with which of the two I would use more. In time, hopefully both.

Great song!

Jack

Think about it this way: your sax is not going to become a useless piece of outdated junkyard-bound hardware in neither two, four, or even twenty years... consider it an investment :)
Thanks for the compliments. :)

Great &mdash 10/13/05 - 04:38:42 PM
songwriting, those are some wicked lyrics. Was that a riff from Interstellar Overdrive?? I really dig the delayed sax, and the mix is just right as usual. Awesome!

Yes! You caught it! Yeah, that bridge was in tribute to the old Floyd's Interstellar
Overdrive.

Glad you liked it.

Wow &mdash 10/13/05 - 05:32:40 PM
Roadhouse based rock and roll. Now that's what I'm talking about.... this
is terrific... your Peter Gunn style guitar shots are excellent and there's
nothing safe about this sax.

Peter- this is an instant download and easily one of the top ten, written,
produced and performed songs I've heard in my time here. Fantastic!

Thanks, Leon. I would have never thought "Huey Lewis and the News" in regards
to this song, but they did use a lot of sax in their music. I guess that's the link.
I'm glad you like it.

Peter Gunn meets Morphine! &mdash 10/13/05 - 10:28:49 PM
[I just lost a comment here that I thought I posted...]

Anyway, I hear a bit of "Top Floor, Bottom Buzzer" here... outrageously
perfect song for a party in a dark and arty loft somewhere....

It rocks. It's got cynicism. It's dark, but it's funny. What's not to like.

Great: vocals, sax, guitars, lyrics, melody, rockin'....

Another great one, Peter...

smokin... &mdash 10/14/05 - 09:40:29 AM
Dangerous tune... great lyrics, wonderfully driving guitar playing and
melody, and I agree that the Sax is perfect and fresh. Wonderful
production, love the pregnant pauses, and the echoed sax... at times it
sounded like sax was smeared all over the walls of the room, wall-to-
wall sax... loved it you two!

Lot's o' fun &mdash 10/14/05 - 05:25:56 PM
Nice dark, smokey bar room sound. Tried and true rock 'n' roll guitar with
a nice smooth feel. Killer lyrics and vocals as usual. The sax really gives it
more of the "rock noir" feel you mentioned. It's great when you
experiment with something "new" because it always works out so well and
is fairly surprising. Enjoyed it very much!

Lot's o' fun &mdash 10/16/05 - 01:37:52 PM
Thanks, man. When I thought of using sax on this I wasn't sure if I'd be able to
find anyone who could play. I asked around and was directed to iG.STUDIO. I
caught him at a busy time, in the middle of a move and other things, so there
was a long delay before he had the time to record for me... several months. I
was tempted at times to give up and just go with a guitar solo but I knew in my
heart that sax was the best choice and that iG.STUDIO was the one to do it and
that I just needed to be patient if I wanted to do it right. Well, I'm really glad I
waited.

I really like this a lot...has a kind of cool new wave sound. I like the
way it turns corners and avoids cliche. Great 'delayed' sax sound..bit
reminiscent of the band Morphine in places..
Like the Interstellar Overdrive riff bit too
Classy

Thanks, Mysti. Years ago I played my guitar and song on the streets of Boulder,
Colorado for a much of a summer (right in the area where Mork and Mindy's
shop was). I remember that on good days I would make enough money to cover
the cost of parking my car.

Wow! &mdash 10/18/05 - 06:50:48 PM
This is a surprise, especially since I've kind of started to rely upon the
email announcement of new songs posted by favs... Never heard
anything regarding this one - this one, which is so f-ing cool! The
bass are so deep, gets right under your skin, and the horns, wow. The
vocals are are also very, very fitting. It opens up like "...my baby do up
in a Brand New Cadillac.." but with the excellent horns it turns into Pink
Floyd'ish artistry, the voice sounds a bit like HIM (finnish act with really
good voice). This is really, really good and I am not surprised,
considering it is coming from you. This is one your best ones as a
complete (song, production, performance all i my taste of course). I
also like the lyrics - they fit so well to the tune. I've experimented
myself and sometimes find it just correct to use a certain type of lyric
even if it sounds bad on paper (poetically speaking), the song brings it
out.
The only minus from me is that the ending sounds a bit abrupt or cut-
off. That is only minor in this case however, see it as a hint. This
really rocks.

Wow! &mdash 10/18/05 - 07:34:42 PM
Thanks, Mikki. I know you, like myself, enjoy experimenting with different
styles. While this has a strong derivative guitar riff style I tried to be original in
the overall composition. Having a real sax part was key.

Wow... &mdash 10/20/05 - 11:43:15 AM
This song just gives me such a Route 66 vibe.

The singing is dead on accurate in further conveying the moody atmosphere of the music. It would have been too easy for the vocals to ruin the music, but they don't.

And the sax... oh, the sax. God, I love saxophone!

Wooooow!! &mdash 10/21/05 - 01:35:33 PM
Just brilliant. So much power and confidence in your voice and
guitar. Really great compulsive rhythm. Definitely one for the
favourites list and the iPod. I find it amazing that you can do
things like this as well as subtle and beautiful stuff like
Somewhere Over Greenland and Last Migration. Much respect to
you. The sax is a really nice touch too ... just what it needs to put
the icing on the cake.

By the way, I love the 'Something' artwork you've got on your bio
page ... very cool indeed. You must surely be one of the most
multi-talented people around.

What's this "mc" you ask about? It might be real... I'm just not sure what it is. hehe.
