Description:
When Stevel posted his instrumental "Fragments," he invited me to add vocals to it....at some point.
"At some point" finally arrived a couple of months later in between working on another project. I had scribbled down some short verses with what came to my mind with the title "Fragments" and with the mic set up, I ran through an improv with the words I had.
Realizing there were not enough words (hah!), I added to what I had and a few minutes later did a second improv'd take and came up with what you hear now, after a couple of 'patches' in the mixing.
Thanks, Steve, for inviting me to sing to this!
Between the lyrics and the laid-back groove, I like to think of this song as 'passive angst' and for that reason I put it under "Alternative" instead of "New Age."
Enjoy.
Lyrics:
Fragments
Fragments of the past,
A place i'd rather leave
Shards like cut and broken glass
Are fragments of your past.
Let me leave....those fragments of your past.
You tell me everything is in the Past
It's in the past to you, yet what more can I do?
It makes me grieve.
Fragments....fragments of your past.
Opening wounds--splinters of belief..in you.
And fragments of the Truth.
And tell them all to me. Tell me everything is in the Past.
Broken and shattered; shards that cut like glass.
From fragments of your past.
And pieces of the Truth.
Pieces of you.

great collab &mdash 10/21/05 - 11:00:19 PM
Wonderful lyrics, great singing, awesome guitar & music bed... nice stuff.
My only critique is that the lyrics are a bit, sharp, which is good, but the
laid back upbeat singing and guitars don't seem to match the darker
mood of the words, at least to me. I really like the lyrics, but they need a
broodier-sounding song to go with them... and this music needs lighter
happier lyrics I think.

great collab &mdash 10/21/05 - 11:27:24 PM
You do bring up a valid point in your comments, drak, and in fact that was a
point of discussion before posting this piece.
The lyrics are brooding and resigned, yet not angry--though they certainly
could be presented in a more edgy and angry way.
Ultimately, though, it seemed an interesting contrast to have the soft vocals in a
sort of haunting acknowledgement of bittersweet resignation.
By dropping most of the reverb away except in a couple of places for effect, it
seemed to bring the song into the context of a conversation--more immediate,
imploring and intimate.

And, the singing voice.
Total is very wonderful. [ Reply to This ]

for such lovely vocals to be added! I really love the delicacy of the
vocals you have added here Mysti. I think the lyrics have a poignant
rather than 'angry' feel which fits nicely too...its more like someone
sadly reflecting back upon a relationship. You do have a lyrical gift to
go with your stunning voice!
Anyway thanks for transforming my humble little tune into something
bigger!

wow &mdash 10/22/05 - 03:59:23 AM
Fabulous music Steve, Very unique and stylish sounds.
Mysti, I like the way you sing on this and the lyrics are particularly good, I
agree, a sort of reflection back on a relationship that perhaps is not what
one thought it was...
Beautiful collab from the two of you.

Trippy, nostalgic collaboration &mdash 10/22/05 - 06:42:29 AM
This has such a sixties feel to it. I think part of it is the fantastic, light,
psychedelic guitars, part of it is Mysti's smooth, almost cheery vocals
amidst the shards of a broken relationship. Hope no one gets cut!
Great collab. Peace, love and soul.

Mysti, I just can't get over how gorgeous your voice is! Between that
and the laid back, mellow guitar, it was just awesome! [ Reply to This ]
What I like... &mdash 10/22/05 - 10:39:37 AM
...is how this song steps outside of conventional form, and yet remains
beautiful, and accessible, and inviting, and clear...
The vocal is strong, pure, sweet and perfectly suited to the lyrics...
The guitar playing is lyrical and pretty...
Really nicely done, you two...

several listens...(mysti gave me a sneak peek steve) this song fell
together nicely in my head. You always mention my ambient playing
as being Hendrixy, Steve. You have conjured up the master here
yerself...beautiful guitar playing and
conceptualizing....Mysti...pfft...what can ya say?...great work...and I
agree with you that the juztaposition of the stark lyric and shimmering
guitar is very very cool.
very very enjoyable track!!! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks Ziti. Funnily enough the original instrumental track of this was partly
inspired by your great collab with Mysti - 'Grace'. I didn't know at that point
that this would end up having Mysti's vocals, so it's funny how it has turned
full circle.

great singing! &mdash 10/23/05 - 10:10:24 AM
the singing is great! love the guitar. only comment: it doesn't sound tight
enough. the percussion doesn't fit the mood of everything else, imho. it
also sounds buried under everything else. i'd try just a simple shaker,
triangle combo thing. better yet, get rid of it all together. i'd love to see a
remix. good job! [ Reply to This ]
natural fit &mdash 10/23/05 - 10:21:36 AM
I had never heard the original stevel track. (sweet guitar
playing, stevel!) So this seemed like it was all conceived at
the same time to me. Your voice is lovely. [ Reply to This ]

Nice work guys. Excellent g'tar and drumming Stevel. This is the
second tune of yours in three days and it's through collaborations that
I am furtunate enough to have a chane to hear your music for the first
time. Nice stuff.
And Mysty, you are so gifted. I was just thiinking the other day, that I'm
not sure that I've ever heard you sing a paticular style of music twice I't
amazing how broad your range is. It ia a special gift, your voice and it
couldn't belong to a nicer person. Lucky for us, you have made it the
gift that keeps on giving.
This is a very beautiful song and a very nice concept. I liked everything
about it except, there is something that isn't quite right w/ my ears
about it and I can't figure it out. I'm sure it's a small thing, but it
sounds as though something is off and at different points. This is very
odd, because each voice is performed beatifully. This is the second
time that I've stopped to listen, since the first time I heard it, I just
decided that it was me. And still, I could be losing the rest of my mind
though and maybe I should read the comments to see if I'm missing
something.
Anywys, there is most definitely some beautiful work going on here
and thanks for sharing it Stevel and Misty.

Fragments of Lovely, Pieces of Beauty &mdash 10/25/05 - 05:50:12 PM
Mysti, A beautiful shimmering vocal that had the same quality as
Steve's guitar playing. Each complimented the other perfectly. Superb
work! [ Reply to This ]

Contrast &mdash 10/29/05 - 01:45:19 AM
I did notice, too, the contrast of melancholic message and the somewhat
upbeat instrumentals. If I listen to it more often, I'll probably come to
terms with that incongruity. The instrumentals are delicious and crystal
clear, crisp and brittle as...well, fragments of glass:-) The vocals are
heavenly. Lyrics are abstractly creative and meaningful. In trying to
maintain consistency of the message, a few words or phrases are a bit
repetitious, though. Those little flaws notwithstanding, overall, high
marks. [ Reply to This ]
Excellent Lyrics &mdash 11/01/05 - 03:44:18 AM
This sounds as though the instrumental parts and voice were planned to
be together from the start - it doesn't seem like *just* an addition, but an
integral part. [ Reply to This ]
Dreaming amongst the futon &mdash 11/27/05 - 10:12:37 AM
A quick narrative...
Normally, when I sit here listening to people's works, I'm hunched forward over the keyboard, commenting as I listen, or my jaw in my hand relaxing with my elbow on the table...
You made me sit back with my headphones on and absorb the flow of your voice, letting the music wash over me, my head listing to one side, eyes closed...
That's never happened before.
Not to mention giving you and your cohort a straight 10 across the boards for this.
Truly, you are a gifted musician.
Thank you. [ Reply to This ]
