Description:
An old Stephen Foster song (Pub. Domain)

Always waiting, hopeful sorrow.

Featuring my spouse, Doadars Aunt!!!!

I could have picked a song to do her justice, next time!

Lyrics:
HARD TIMES

Stephen Foster

Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears,
While we all sup sorrow with the poor;
There's a song that will linger forever in our ears;
Oh Hard times come again no more.

Chorus:
Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
Hard Times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door;
Oh hard times come again no more.

While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay,
There are frail forms fainting at the door;
Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say
Oh hard times come again no more.

Chorus

There's a pale drooping maiden who toils her life away,
With a worn heart whose better days are o'er:
Though her voice would be merry, 'tis sighing all the day,
Oh hard times come again no more.

Chorus

Foster had some great stuff. Much of it timeless.

Thanks for the comments!

really nice version of a classic! &mdash 10/24/05 - 01:11:05 PM
I especially like Doadars Aunt's harmonies: sounding more than a little like Emmylou Harris. There was a really good tribute album that came out a little while back of the songs of Stephen Foster and Mavis Staples did this song on it. One of my favorite versions is by Akiko Yano. But I like the delicateness of your version right here; it does this excellent song justice.

Thank you for your praise.

I'll pass it on to my Sweetie! She has always looked up to Emmylou Harris.

I challenge her to match my ragged phrasing. It is difficult. Especially when
we can only record one track at a time and she can't watch me for cues.

That compilation is called "Beautiful Dreamer-the songs of Stephen Foster" in
case you were wondering. There's some interesting and somewhat less-well-
known Foster tunes on there and great collection of diverse artists.

Downloading and listening to this more closely there's a little crackling sound
in the recording that sounds like a bad cable or something. It's not so much a
negative, because I think this song's subject matter isn't at odds with a
somewhat lo-fi treatment, but it just struck me as something that bears
mentioning. Still it's a little distracting detail that may detract from your
recordings that maybe could be sorted out if it is inadvertant.

I still really like this a lot!

I really enjoyed listening. Great voice work.

The "crackling" effect mentioned above, although not be appropriate for
most songs, adds to this one.

Another great piece of music. Keep it up.

nyakki!!

Thanks for the comment. This is a good song to have ragged. I had some
production issues that I have since cleaned up. But in the future, if I were to
readdress this song, I might keep it a bit marred.
