Description:
"You see I'm not thinking about you I'm thinking about not thinking about you".
Lyrics:
Not Thinking About You (© 2004)
----------------------------------
I'm no longer thinking about
your golden skin and belly button ring
Because it takes all my time and
I know it doesn't mean a thing
You see I'm not thinking about you
I'm thinking about not thinking about you
and you may say that's just relative
a first order derivative
(chorus)
And this may sound like I've been drinking
But it's because I've been thinking
about not thinking about you
about not thinking about you
And you may say it's me I'm fooling
and I'll admit it's been grueling
to try not thinking about you
to try not thinking about you
I'm no longer thinking about
your ankle chain and baby doll dress
Because I'm different now
and I am not a chocolate mess
You see I'm not thinking about you
I'm thinking about not thinking about you
and you may say that's just relative
a first order derivative
(chorus)
(bridge:)
I've got a plan for getting over you
and I believe I've reached step two
but I'll admit the frequent iteration
has certainly become a complication
(Keyboard solo)
(chorus – repeat & fade)

Great track &mdash 10/26/05 - 12:24:47 PM
I'll get the nitpicks out of the way first. It could use some fine tuning on
the EQ. Everything sounds a little too squeezed. And, okay, this is really
anal, BUT, when you sing " a first order derivative", you stretch it out. It
would sound better if you sang it fast, short and syncopated. Lastly, you
don't need that last voiceover at the very end.
Okay, that being said. The songwriting is first rate, the arrangement
excellent, the singing also. This one's in my Library. [ Reply to This ]
a first order derivative &mdash 10/28/05 - 09:17:30 AM
Nice energy, straight forward classic rock. Solid tune. The humor is very
nice, could use even more. Couple of ideas: With the relentlessness of the
beat, a moment to reset, a little break might help, to let yourself (and the
listener) take a breath between sections. Also, I'd love a little change in
vocal range, either through a layered harmony or a modulation up or
down in a bridge when you maybe think about something else for one
moment but then go back to the main theme. In my ears, it needs a
moment or two of variation to really soar. But solid tune, again. [ Reply to This ]
Bravo!! &mdash 10/28/05 - 10:57:08 AM
yeah... &mdash 10/28/05 - 12:23:19 PM
i like this, its has a nice energy, as Tobin pointed out. I also like the
idea of not simply thinking about someone when you shouldnt be, but
actually thinking about not thinking about them...which i guess means
you are thinking about them...lol! Anyway, its a good idea to revolve a
song around. The little humerous phone call bit was an interesting
addition too. I think some more variation in the vocals wouldnt go
amiss, but other than that, great track! :-) [ Reply to This ]
Dig it &mdash 10/28/05 - 01:24:16 PM
Another great tune. You guys always sound tight. What's good about
this is obvious, so I'll get to the critical bits: 1. I think the backup
vocals during the chorus could come up a little; I can hear them
enough to know they are there but not very well. They seem about
right during the bridge part though. Might sound nicer to have them
sung at a harmony pitch. (Just a thought) 2. The phone conversion
parts, well, honestly I don't care much for that in there (seems a little
hokey and stilted). But aside from liking or not liking that phone stuff
in there or not it sounds much too loud in the mix.
That said, I must repeat, this is solid stuff. You guys have a great
sound and come off as pros. Always catchy and smart. I'd buy your
album if you put one together. [ Reply to This ]
Well crafted song &mdash 10/28/05 - 06:19:27 PM
Really first rate song-writing. I just love the line "I'm thinking about not
thinking about you". Keys are outstanding- man I love hearing keys
(especially organ) and synths in a song...
Nit pics? A couple- thought the backing vocs could have been louder
along with the organ piece just before the phone bit.
It's a terrific song that will go nicely with the other music I've downloaded
of yours.

good, smart pop &mdash 10/29/05 - 06:59:22 PM
It's funny, of all of the cliches in pop music, the you're-not-on-my-
mind
cliche is the one that I enjoy deriding the most, because if this former
lover really wasn't on the songwriter's mind, the song would have been
about something else, right?
But here you have circumvented my complaint by having the song
actually be about you thinking about not thinking about her. Just
that little twist. Such a fine line...
The first-order derivitive line tickles my math degree, just like
the C line in Yahoo Girl tickled my computer science degree.
I think you're very good at this geek-pop genre. I hope to hear more.

wow, the form scraping routine ate my plus plus.
That's allright, just a chance for me to say more.
The constructive comments that you have received so
far contain excellent suggestions, especially the one
that suggests making the mock phone call either
more subtle, more realistic, or absent.
But, really, that's a bit like complaining about Cindy
Crawford's mole.

I like it! &mdash 10/30/05 - 08:01:44 PM
This is a cool tune. The "...thinking 'bout you..." backing vocals make
it. Nice touch. Great use of different instrument sounds too. And, of
course, awesome voice. [ Reply to This ]

Okay. I am quite obviously not a music expert. That being said, your target audience isn't just limited to music experts is it? The beginning of the song hooked me in and the changes and beat kept me listening. [ Reply to This ]
