Description:
I was playing solo one night a while ago and started what I thought was going to be Stateboro Blues. When I started singing however, Answers just sorta came out.
Didn't even realise I knew all the words but I guess if you listen to something often enough, it becomes embedded on the brain. As I was playing it, I thought: "Man, I wish Tiler was sittin' in right now."

So here ya be.

A note about the drums: A long time ago, I saw Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee in concert. My first "real" blues concert actually. Of course I was hooked immediately. They had this guy with them who stood in the back with a snare, beat-up old cymbal and cowbell. Most often he used the brushes and really didn't do anything fancy but somehow, it just all seemed to fit. He was quite the guy. After every tune, he'd reach into his coat pocket, take out a mickey and have a swig. Then he'd put it back in his coat and never miss a beat. Also, he very seldom hit the cymbal, except at the very beginning and at the very end.
Answers sorta took me back to that time and place when I first discovered the blues and that's primarily why the drum track is there and why it's like it is.

If I had any answers, I would share them with you
If I had any answers, I would share them with you
About why we was put here and what it is we're supposed to do

Well, if I had any answers, you know I'd let you know
Yeah, if I had any answers people, I would surely let you know
About where love disappears to and all the things that make it go

If I had the answers, I would share them with you
If I had the answers, I would share them with you
After everything we've been through baby, that'd be the least that I could do

If I had any answers, you know I'd clue you in
If I had any of the answers, I would surely clue you in
About how you slay your demons, before they do you in

hey guys &mdash 10/28/05 - 11:03:14 AM
Thank you, Zetes, for the kind words and for a tune that takes a regular turn
in my starting rotation.

Of course I hope everybody likes it but as long as you (and T) are pleased,
that's all I need to know.

Man,

Love the Lyric. Great Guitars, the Slide mentions Ry Cooder to me, being
poignant without being too present.

Fine Collab. TOP Production.

Cooper

This is really cool! &mdash 10/26/05 - 10:27:41 PM
Such a different feel from ziti's original take on this song. And it totally
works! A great delivery, great pacing, great fills! Everything great!

wow, cool singing indeed &mdash 10/26/05 - 10:36:26 PM
Like this singing snow, this is one of the best singing for this type of style
i"ve heard here. It just seems like your singin is spot on in coolness here.

In fact of all the songs I've heard you sing, this one has real snow texture
in the fullest.

That singin is real radio country friendly!

Thanks T. Somehow, it seems to me I can step it up a notch when I know I'm
going to be sending a track to you, in my own mind at any rate.

reminiscences &mdash 10/27/05 - 03:51:51 AM
Ry Cooder reminiscences it is (they are?) - very laid back blues. Nice
micing on the acoustic, and the low key drumming works really well.
Great post guys!!

Ah, The Cooder. Haven't really thought about him much in recent years but
there was a time when he was a god to my buddies and me. Funny how those
old influences stick with you eh?

Thanks Neil

Cool blues &mdash 10/27/05 - 04:09:01 AM
Great track guys..shades of JJ Cale and Roy Buchanan. Lovely
performance, guitars and vocals really work nicely as does the
understated drum track

Cool blues &mdash 10/28/05 - 11:51:15 AM
Thanks Steve.

Buchannan, Bromberg, Cale, and Cooder. Huge part of my music collection,
and yet, if somebody asked me to cite influences, none of them would
immediately leap to mind, with the possible exception of Cale. (Curious aside,
it took me awhile to warm up to Clapton's After Midnight.) But they're in
there.

Fascinating to me.

Thanks again Steve.

THIS is what a version should do... &mdash 10/27/05 - 07:05:28 AM
...and be...

You guys really take this into a different space than the Ziti original,
which does what a lot of blue recordings do: makes it a new and
original take... y'know, that being why people can have 19 versions of
Statesboro in their collections...

Spacing out the lyrical delivery as you do hear, giving space for the
picking and the slide, is a good call...

Acoustic tone is fine... on my set-up I could go with a whisper more of
drums to get some drum and brush tone in there...

Now I'll just wait 'til there's a version of this one with a harmonica
solo...

Nicely done.

Ed

Thanks Ejh. And you make an excellent point about versions.

Here's another wrinkle to versions. Up until Zetes sent me his album, I would
have cited Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower as the best example of
interpreting someone else's song.

However, Ziti's Superstition was so damn good it made me say: "Stevie Who?"
Never really cared for the tune that much until I heard Zetes do it.

I'm off to search the web now as I only have 14 versions of Statesboro and
need to catch up.

Very nice colab and piece of blues. Reminds me of Bromberg. Excellent
work.

Thanks Attie.

After The Holdup, this Danger Man's been Wanted Dead or Alive. They'll
probly Send Me to the 'Lectric Chair.

And to answer your question, I've been known to play until they turn out the
lights. Just a little something Out of the Blues.

blues &mdash 11/08/05 - 05:10:57 PM
you have a very mellow voice, i like blues and the guitar is nicely done. i think id like the vocals if they were a little bit higher in pitch at parts but not much higher.

'cute' song &mdash 11/23/05 - 04:38:18 PM
Nice simple musical setting. And the lyrics are just great. In a few lines
you tell the listner what it is about and what the one who is telling the
story went through.

oh yeah &mdash 01/02/06 - 09:05:18 PM
I like this a lot. The traditional simplicity is a delight. Great singing and
playing and actually the production is solid. That percussion really works.
I remember how much my dad could do just with his hand on his pants
leg while he drove the car, the old pat-n-brush.

Thanks for the music, guys.
