Description:
Brandon gave me a beautiful piece of music called "Let's Run Away." I didn't manage to use the title, but the concept of running away remained in this song. The lyrics are based on the life of a very good friend of mine.
I love Brandon's music to death and thought he was a dream to work with. He has been a true friend to me. I really encourage anyone who likes Mermaid to check out all of his other wonderful songs.
The song art is provided courtesy of Mr:p
Lyrics:
Mermaid
I once loved you,
but I fell into the sea and drowned.
The seaweed yanked me under;
the mermaids taught me
sad songs.
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie
The salt in the water tore off my skin,
left me raw and aching,
but you threw me back in
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
All we had was a lie.
The mermaids swam away
and left me alone.
I learned how to swim
all on my own
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie
You found a lifeboat,
sailed off in the spray,
left nothing behind
but the smell of decay.
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
I don't want this lie.
I washed up on the rocks
and found a real man,
grew legs so I could walk with him,
I left the past behind.
Lie, lie, lie,
I see you sailing off the horizon,
the wind blows my hair over my eyes
and you are gone.
Gone, gone, gone.
I'm walking barefoot,
feeling the grass between my toes,
watching the albatross fly.
The smell of sea salt
follows me everywhere,
but the reek of the water
will soon be gone.
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
Lie, lie, lie, lie, lie lie lee lee lay
He will hold me.
He will love me.
He will heal me.

Best yet &mdash 11/01/05 - 05:59:40 AM
It is a pleasure watching (and listening to) you grow as a songwriter. I
believe this is your best song yet. Mesmerizing, slightly creepy in that
ledebutant way - a good creepy - and lovely vocals. I think in this piece
your voice and harmonies are better than ever. But it is the device of
the 'lie' that sets this piece apart, lifts it up above the ordinary.
Brandon, the bed for this is perfect. An excellent vamp. So, with that, I
give you two what we all want (except maybe Lisa's friend, the former
mermaid with hair in her eyes) - straight 10s. [ Reply to This ]

Dear Santa &mdash 11/01/05 - 08:30:07 AM
Dear Santa, we need to talk midi keyboard in my stocking, also I desperately
need a mic stand so I can get rid of the stack of plastic tubs I'm currently
resting my mic on.
Oh. Farg. You're not Santa.
I'm so glad you like this song, Tom. You are such a generous friend. I
appreciate the early listens you gave as I was mixing this...and HEY! no key
change in this one. :-)
My songs are often creepy. I wish I could figure out where on earth that
comes from

It's a funny thing about genres... &mdash 11/01/05 - 06:41:33 AM
...as has been noted before in discussion of ledebutant efforts...
Sure, this is pop, among all the other things it is... but it's also the real
deal implied by the word 'progressive' and it out-progs so much of
what gets labeled prog...
The lyrical structure is great... that beautiful "lie, lie", not overdone...
The lyrics have layers and questions in them that are left in the
listener's hands...
The vocals are well done, great pitch and phrasing, and suited to the
emotion of the tune...
The instrumental bed Brandon put together is a great underpinning to
all of this... Brandon's synth stuff always sounds just off the beaten
path, and is the better for it...not yer usual sounds, but not sounding
like they're trying too hard to be not yer usual sounds, either...
I really like this...

It's a funny thing about genres... &mdash 11/01/05 - 08:47:49 AM
Thanks so much, Ed. I had a rough time trying to decide where to put this
song. It could have fit into Electronica, too, I think. If you come back, Ed, I'd
be interested to know more about what makes this song prog. I know that I
like prog, but I don't understand the genre very well and would like to know
more.
In the end I chose Pop because I knew that would drive Brandon the craziest.
:-)
His stuff does always sound different and I really love that about this music,
too.
You are either the world's fastest typist or you do nothing but type MJ

Lisa, every song you post showcases your tremendous growth &mdash 11/01/05 - 09:36:24 AM
as a songwriter. And as is usual for your songs, there is that heart-on-
your-sleeve honesty (though this is shrouded in myth) that is believable
and yet not sappy or saccharine. I think that is one your appeals to us as
listeners (and collaborators too, I'd guess).
Brandon:p, as others have mentioned, the music is really cool and really
out there. Great sounds [ Reply to This ]

syncopate or swim &mdash 11/01/05 - 09:52:13 AM
I love this, because it is very elegantly and tastefullly ALL of the
following: ethereal, disturbing, heart-wrenching, soft. The rhythmic
music is a great syncopated backdrop, very enjoyable. But I think your
singing soars over it, and the lyrics are probably the crowning
achievement of all of this. I enjoyed the interesting sparkly effects and
the overall texture of the music. Your singing is silky smooth. In awe...

Well, well, well, it's my favorite world-playing dragon.
You're very right that this song is heart-wrenching. The situation my friend is
in is very painful for her, but has moment of softness, you're right.
I don't think anyone has ever called me tasteful before, so I need to mark that
down in my pink, bedazzled notebook with my Hello Kitty pen.

I really liked this in all respects except for that buzzy bell effect thing...
ANNYOYING AS HELL at the level it's at in the mix. [ Reply to This ]
nice but.. &mdash 11/02/05 - 11:47:38 AM
The buzzy bell thing, which I always thought of as the "sproinger-doinger"
was very hard to mix, indeed. It is part of the main percussion loop, so I
couldn't turn the levels down on the sproinger-doinger without losing the
levels on the percussion, so I tried to compromise. It used to be much louder.
Your comment is really valid, I'm just not sure how to get around it. Thank
you, Rob, for saying that you liked the song otherwise. [ Reply to This ]
nice but.. &mdash 11/10/05 - 09:35:47 PM
If you put an EQ on the percussion track prior to mixing it, you could selectively
"dim" the frequencies where that sound exists without doing too much damage
to the rest of the percussion track.
Sprinkle to taste. [ Reply to This ]

I love Brandon's track too, Chak. It's deceptively simple. I think my favorite bit
is the part right before the spoken word. It gets very pretty there.
Thanks for saying that the spoken word works. I thought I was very fancy for
figuring how to create a telephone effect with EQ. I'm easily pleased, I reckon.

I thought it was Hasselhoff &mdash 11/02/05 - 07:21:02 AM
It is Hasselhoff, but brandon:p had used an alternative spelling when he first
used it as a keyword on one of his own songs and I added it to one of mine
just to make him laugh, then I just had to add it to this one, too. The keyword
linkage only works if the spelling is identical.

So what do you think about The Spongebob Movie? It also has to do with things under the sea, like your song. An epic journey of redemption and transformation...I thought of Joseph Campbell and "The Hero of a Thousand Faces"
---and, yeah, I don't comment much these days...I do check things out but I am usually too busy (and/or in a bit of turmoil... or something similar to that at least... these days) to properly comment. I just had to say something due to the funny keyword inclusion, and that's how I thought Hasslehoff was related to this song. [ Reply to This ]

I think this is the best work you've done it really excels. I think though that you have even more vocal punch lurking. I can hear where your voice has power but coasts along when I really wanted it to just swell out. The song and theme and all has a quiet lost pain to it but it also has passion that I would love to hear expressed as well. All 9's but I think you can make it all 10's to me. Intricate and delicately complex. Totally engrossing composition.
I, too, sank with the "Mermaid's Sad Songs" and was lifted to watch "the
Albatross fly", heading for that horizon, perhaps. A unique telling of a
regeneration and a Bold Drama from the author of, another favorite of
mine, "Sweet Baby"; the commonality being Strength of Vision.
Compelling and Unexpected Orchestration with TOP Production Values.
