The Scope Of Time

Description
For this song, I used an acoustic guitar, doubled with the Jam Pack 12-string, GB ballad bass, GB string section, and my favorite Simon Phillips drum samples. Simon is a great drummer who played with Jeff Beck and a lot of other guys. I love his disk. The guitar solo is my Les Paul Deluxe through my Zoom PS02 amp simulator.

Lyrics
In the scope of time, there’s no such thing as permanence
The very thought that you can leave your mark is arrogance
Even emperors are eventually forgotten
We’re all just dinosaurs and dragons before the comet

You work so hard
You play so rough
And in the end it’s not enough

In the scope of time, there’s no such thing as history
We’re just a ripple in the pond of mystery
No celebrity, army or money can protect us
Building our sandcastles in a tsunami

You work so hard
You play so rough
And in the end it’s not enough
Makes no difference how life goes
Just let the spirit flow
(solo, repeat chorus)

In the scope of time, there’s no such thing as happiness
Life’s just a penny on the sidewalk to nothingness
In the scope of time, there’s no such thing as sorrow
We’re all just temporary fools
Temporary fools
Temporary fools

Intriguing voice character, and good singing. But mostly, I really liked
the lyrics & idea, loved the guitar work, and really really liked the
overall song structure and harmonies... almost Beatles-like in some
ways. What a great ballad. This feels like one of those songs that
could be epic with London Symphony Orchestra backing. Very nice
work!

Great flow
Very well crafted tune. Voice is very distinctive and fits the song so darn
well. Lyrics are very strong and the guitar solo is perfect! Add a real good
mix and it equals a download. Very enjoyable!

Very good!
Haven't seen you around for a long time, I am glad you're back (I missed
the previous song posted), but this is such a great song! The
arrangements are so thoughout, the production are tight, the
performance incredible both in regards to the guitar and the vocals... The
song writing is superb. I can hear both Beatles, Bowie and Floyd in here,
of course done in your personal way. By far one of the best ones posted
here period. Thank you!!!

made me quit my job.
great tune.
The melodic phrases really accentuate the lyrics very well.
Those Simon Phillips drum samples sound great. I wish they were
bigger in the mix.
temporary fools......that is brilliant.

You must like to read...
I am very drawn to the Eastern thought you bring to the lyric here. I like
the mood you created musically to deliver your message. It just works, as
does the vocal.

Great job of constructing the drum track. Very well put together. I might
have even brought them up a bit in the mix.

This is a good song on every level, Paul.

Temporary fools
I always enjoy your tunes. So solid, straightforward, and your vocals have
a style that is self-effacing and sly in their delivery. Add that to this Zen
of Shrinking Lives In The Face of Big Time and you achieve a wonderful
sort of retro-future mantra. I have to admit, however, from a personal
standpoint, I don't at all mind being a temporary fool; it takes a certain
pressure off. I also have to mention that the state of being temporary
does not affect the state of meaningfulness or joy (or pain) I experience,
in my eyes. Asking for infinitude or permanence is, perhaps, the bugaboo.
I revel in my impermanence, reinventing moments until I run out. Some
people are just born happy, I think. It's in the genes. Thanks for lending
your happy voice to this solid track.

Temporary fools
Thanks everyone! Tobin, you nailed what I was trying to say exactly, so I'm
hopeful the message is getting through. Just because I say things like "in the
scope of time there's no such thing as happiness" doesn't there's no happiness
now. It's just that in the overall scheme of "The Big Time," as you so wonderfully
put it, happiness is largely irrelevant. The only element that can affect "The Big
Time" is global human stupidity like, umm, greenhouse gases and stuff.
Yup, there's definite wisdom in appreciating what is temporary. Nothing else
matters really, unless you believe in some sort of afterlife/spirit unbound by
planetary rules. Like, cosmic, mannnnnnnnnnn.

Aren't we all
I just watched this movie and a mother character says to her daughter, "I
lived my life for myself. You lived your life for your children. Neither
works." A perfect moment. Great song.

going with the flow
I thought maybe you would be ending it with "There's only permanent fools," but I suppose in the great scope of time nothing is permanent, even fools.

Several intellectual associations are are conjured when listening to your song, such as Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" and its delineation of a immense, expanding, finite universe; Percy Schelley's "Ozymandias," the poem about an exalted king of kings reduced by time to a trunkless statue surrounded by his mighty works all reduced to sand, and Classic Western stoic philosophy, which argues that too much happiness is as unwelcome as too much sadness ... to name a few. Yet nothing seems to be quoted directly - the lyrics come off as an individual assessment of the human condition. That's nice writing. What I particularly like is the brief chorus -
You work so hard
You play so rough
And in the end it's not enough
which aptly sums up the grand proposition in a few concise words.

You sing with an understandable resignation. Yet there is a hint of a solution in "just let the spirit flow." What more can temporary fools do, except to go with the flow?

Epiphany
What a terrific combination of lyrics, melody and arrangement. Poignant,
simple, heartfelt. It's the come-to-terms peace of realizing the transient,
impermanent nature of life and our place in the world. Your philosophical
outlook and musical sense are gifts. Really enjoyed it.
