Description:
Just a silly little ditty.

Lyrics:
There's a man ripping out tunes
On an accordion
It's hard work trying to make it sound worthwhile

He has a rest and is met by
An older woman
She's not telling him the truth
When she says

"I love that song
It makes me feel funny
Won't you play it again for me"

He has a drink and a cigarette
And he starts again
It's hard work trying to keep his mind on the job

She has a seat on a bench
That is right beside him
And when he looks in her direction she shuts her eyes
She starting to think

"I like that song
It makes me feel funny
As he plays it again for me"

He looks for her as he's leaving
He wonders why he played that song again
But she appears from behind his cigarette smoke
It seems she still wants to hear some more

He parks the car and is met by
That view again
He must have been here a thousand times before

But this is the first time he's had company
And this is the first time that she has felt this alive

She loves that song
It makes her feel funny
When he plays it again
Up above the lights
Up above the world

Great to hear some new Nolan! &mdash 11/05/05 - 08:13:10 AM
I would say more touching than silly. Nice little slice of life story.
Wonderful sound with just the voice and guitar. Wonderfully crafted lyrics
and great delivery. The vocals are right on the spot. Enjoyed it very much.

Funny You Mentioned Neil Finn &mdash 11/05/05 - 05:51:05 PM
The chorus reminds me of a Crowded House song.
I think it's on woodface. I can't put my finger on it.
This is a great story. Superbly sung. Awesome.

As member in good standing... &mdash 11/05/05 - 07:46:00 PM
...of the Nolan Fan Club, I want to say that what I value the most in
music is a good song.

You write good songs, Nolan. Then you sing them really well. You've
got, in my opinion, one of the best voices on the site. If you ARE
secretly Neil Finn, then please send me your autograph. Actually, even
if you are Nolan, please send me your autograph.

Anyway, what was I saying? Right. Good songs. (Which includes great
lyrics and melodies). Great voice. No mean hand at the guitar, either.
That's the basic core right there, and every time I listen to one of your
songs, you deliver.

Ed

You know, Ed. I was having the same thought.

Nolan- great song. Perfectly sung and not overproduced. Another Nolan
download... time to give you your own iTunes playlist!

I was about to write that you have one of the best voices on the site, when
I saw that another member of the Nolan fan club has already said it...

Well, I can even say that you have one of the best voices in the world
without overstating. I actually and truly think so!

And it is very personal too. First word and I can hear directly ... that's
Nolan. Can't be anyone else! Guess that's a very usefull component for
your future sucess ... well it MUST come ... if you want .... and work ... it
must come... I cant se any other possibility ...

Awesome Lyrics &mdash 11/07/05 - 08:03:06 PM
Great lyrics, reminds me of a guy I know. I think you should add some drums (that keep the acoustic sound though) halfway through. And you're voice is pretty dang good. Bravo.

Rising soul &mdash 11/08/05 - 06:56:15 AM
You have such a sweet light voice. This song reminds me of Harry Chapin
in the story line part of it. It is so great when people find each other.
Your words are really good, I saw the whole thing in my head. Really
good. And your last words, above the world, that's where I was watching
from and felt like a rising soul.

I love this song &mdash 01/07/06 - 01:09:44 PM
It makes me feel jealous
When I play it again
It's just appreciation

Of your sick voice
And your lovely guitar production
I hope that one day
We'll be paying to hear

nolan, in concert somewhere
Yeah...
in concert somewhere
Yeah...

-straight to my fav's list.

Thanks heaps, Josh. Love the new verse, by the way. Though I might sound
like a bit of a goose singing about myself like that.

Simply delightful &mdash 01/10/06 - 12:41:11 PM
What a beautiful little gem this is. The story is so very touching, a delicate courtship between two seemingly delicate people. I wasn't sure where the song was going, and as it became clear, I found myself rooting for these two and whatever they needed to figure out. For a song to do that is such an amazing feat, and you've pulled it off here with a lightness of style and feel that is quite admirable. Technically, psssh, what have I got to say to this? It's a beautifully written and performed piece, one of the nicest surprises I've heard here on this site. Thanks for posting it!

Dreadmon, thanks so much for that comment. Very much appreciated. I've
always wondered if I hit the mark with that song; I've never been quite sure if
the lyrics actually say (to someone else) what I imagined. You know when you
work on something over and over again and you kinda lose sight of what
you've done? (I don't even know what that means) Anyway, after reading your
comment, I feel happy with the song, so thanks a lot.

What do you say... &mdash 01/18/06 - 10:08:42 AM
I got phat chills listening to this. Very solid vocal work. Normally, it's
kinda challenging for me to listen to lyrics, but this tune is very fluidl,
and was so good to me ears, that it was easy to listen to and grasp
what was being sung. Nice lyrics. Nice guitar stroken' - Perfect
structure.

I don't know your work and I feel kinda silly saying nice things about
your tune, as it seems as though you are an accomplished musician
who has heard these words way many times at the begining of your
career. As well, I don't know what else to say to an accomplished
musician, but I'm betting that I'd prolly feel as silly as I do now...

In any event, thanks for sharing this piece with us Nolan. - Dion

Please don't feel silly, Dion. I really appreciate your comments. I wouldn't
call myself an accomplished musician. MacJams is the only real audience I've
ever had. So I love getting comments and I'm stoked you enjoyed the song.
Thanks.

I especially like the sound and mixing of your voice and the guitar. Mellow but alive. I agree with the other reviewers - your voice sounds great. You definitely have a rare talent. I am currently listening to your previously posted songs. Do you really record everything else? Impressive!!!

the kind of song I aspire to write some day. Great stuff, one of my

Great Tune Nolan ! &mdash 03/03/06 - 08:50:13 AM
I read your forum post about this song having hiss. I'm listening to it through a good set of Senheiser headphones and the hiss is barely audible. I think if you upgrade to a condensor mic like the Rode NT1a you will get the crystal clear sound your looking for, but this sounds perfectly good to me. You write clever lyrics. They convey a story, very conversational. Yoou have a great voice. The guitar accopanyment is understated but very effective. I have about three acoustic solo pieces I'm working on now but I haven't yet come up with lyrics near your quality. I have always played electric guitar in bands over the years, but I think nothing is more powerful then a solo acoustic guitar song with vocals and your tune is a prime example of one well done.

Nice work, Nolan. I just listened to your new post and had to check out your other songs.

Your voice - not just the singing voice, but the point of view voice - is unique and quite powerful.

Made a little folder! &mdash 03/14/06 - 02:56:57 PM
Well, i have made a your own little folder on my computer now, not just putting you in the Macjams Folder! I got very interested in your tunes when i heard your latest post the other day. I didnt pay that much attention to the lyrics, maybe thats why I only see the beauty and not the silly dilly in this song? The song is beautiful, and i really love the chorus! Great Work Mister Nolan!
