Description:
So I finally put some strings on the old Yamaha this morning, and felt the need...
It's a song about coming undone...it's messy, like everything else I do. Mind you, I had no intention of creating a song. I just wanted to see how the guitar sounded recorded. Essentially, this is yet another improv...with vocals.
a couple of tracks, acoustic guitar and vocals...all improv.
Hardware:
Yamaha acoustic, PB G4, M Audio Pre USB, MXL 900 Mic.

Intimate &mdash 11/07/05 - 04:35:29 PM
Like sitting around with friends, absorbed in the music, the playing guitar and singing. Real soul and no pretense, always engaging. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks PV. I'm not too good at glossing them up, just too damn impatient, so
figured I just better post them the way they spill out....

ya...right. I sing in the car, but I sure appreciate the comment especially
considering the source. Dang...it's scary to post vox. I mean...you could really
get a good whipping out here!

I didn't know that you were this good on guitar. The vocals are real
nice too.
Thanks for sharing

I didn't know &mdash 11/08/05 - 10:22:57 AM
Thanks John, considering I haven't played in 2 years...and I've barely played
guitar in the past 5. Have mostly been playing keys. I tore all of my guitars to
shreds and have been working on them for years. Just recently sort of getting
them all back together. This particular Yamaha is a 335 that I bought in
1983...used, at a garage sale, which I just finished...litterally, this was the first
thing I played on it, so I decided to record it to see how it faired through the
mic. The strings are bright as they were just pulled new after 2 years without
them...over the reworked fretboard...anything could have happened. My fingers
this morning are shredded...gotta love new strings. [ Reply to This ]

Undone well done &mdash 11/07/05 - 05:02:03 PM
Put some undonewear on that song art guy.
Hey, Blaine, wonderful playing and singing. High quality
reproduction. Pretty good job doubling up with yourself. I tried that
yesterday on a song and barely pulled it off.
More singing like this! You go, guy! [ Reply to This ]
Undone well done &mdash 11/08/05 - 09:51:59 AM
Sorry RS, clothes weren't an option in Poser v1. Thanks for the comments RS...If I
had your great voice, I wouldn't have to "double" meself.
BTW "barely pulled it off" is a great name for a song...very funny connotations.

OK...you're all nuts &mdash 11/07/05 - 05:17:19 PM
I have never...and I mean never, been able to play and sing at the same
time. This morning, for the hell of it, but mostly to avoid work...I
decided to set up my dormant M Audio Pre USB and my mic, and see
what the Yamaha sounded like through the mic. I wasn't monitoring it
through the PB, just playing acoustically in the room, "improvising" and
I ended up "singing". When I listened back to it I was really surprised at
they way it sounded. (the guitar through the mic). The first track is
essentially the whole song, but I did go back and add those
"good?" (you're kidding) harmonies, and some minor quitar stuff. A bit
too long perhaps, but man...when you've never sung and played, and
suddenly you find yourself doing it, it was like splitting in two,
like...coming undone.

Damn &mdash 11/07/05 - 06:25:28 PM
I love this off the cuff stuff. No pretense- just good mellow music. Very
cool vocal and damn... you play guitar too? You sir, are a helluva
musician! [ Reply to This ]
Great raw acoustic track &mdash 11/08/05 - 01:03:00 AM
I do like this kind of stuff....the vocals sound like a cross between Neil
Young and early Bowie. Very nice acoustic guitar work... the whole
thing has a kind of 60's folk feel. Or perhaps a Devendra Benhart kind
of feel (well he recreates that 60's sound anyway!)
Nice one

Great raw acoustic track &mdash 11/08/05 - 09:42:09 AM
Thanks Steve & AC. I think "raw" is a reasonable description...that would be
characteristic of most of my music, and that you like it...well, that's just cool.

In the room &mdash 11/09/05 - 08:21:28 AM
Reminds me of the improv "Music Is Love" on David Crosby's first solo
album. Very mellow, retro folk hip, totally took me back. And forth.
Thanks for inviting me into the room. [ Reply to This ]
aw geesh &mdash 11/09/05 - 12:15:43 PM
you play the guitar AND sing! this is one of the reasons JOAN likes to
stay in her bunker. it does have a nice bowie-ish thing about
it....minus a stimulant or two. nice piece of work blaine. [ Reply to This ]
The magic moment... &mdash 11/09/05 - 02:43:29 PM
..is now. And its when sitting down like you did and taking on what comes flowing. Like the others have pointed out, great guitar playing, and a good voice to follow it.
Play some more guitar:)

As with the old improv tapes... &mdash 11/09/05 - 06:25:02 PM
...with your old friend, and the eBow stuff...
This is a very cool improvised piece.
Your singing is great, the guitar work is rich and deep, and the whole
song, like a Nick Drake or Neil Young thing, communicates a mood or
a state of mind without reference to the words...
It reminds me of Drake's "River Man" a little, and a bit more of Aztec
Two Step's "Cockroach Cacophony"...

As with the old improv tapes... &mdash 11/10/05 - 05:39:58 PM
I try to just play what I feel Ed...I just don't know any better. I'm not trying to be
tricky...I just really have no idea what I'm doing, which in a way, sort of frees me
up to do whatever I can. The fact that the music itself conveys something...even
without the words, is really important to me. It's something you "feel" when you
listen to Neil Young, Nick Drake, David Silvian...and the like.
I have absolutely no hope of becoming a "guitar great" or a "virtuoso"
player...but every once in awhile, I can play just what I feel, and that's what I'm
looking for, the fact that you responded...well, that just puts it over the top for
me. [ Reply to This ]
jeez &mdash 11/10/05 - 02:46:54 PM
another surprise from my pal blaine....you play guitar great! this is a
cool little tune...the guitar sounds wonderful...very in tune and fat!!

jeez &mdash 11/10/05 - 05:32:14 PM
I play like crap...but tuning...now that's something I'm real good at. Even though
I'm messy, I like to be messy in tune. Always had a real keen ear for it actually.
But, "jeez" give me a break you guys...I really appreciate the props...but I'm just
not good enough to deserve it you know. If I had half your talent
Ziti...correction...ANY of your talent...
Thank you, thank you...I'm just a hack. It's me taking the bow. [ Reply to This ]

nice direction &mdash 11/11/05 - 03:03:44 PM
I think... &mdash 11/13/05 - 12:55:14 PM
...you should do this kinda improv/playing/singing more often,
Blainers!
Wow. Listening to this song as I skimmed over the previous comments,
I thought....'Wow!" (eloquent, eh? :P)
It's not about how 'good your voice is' (and for the record, to my ears,
it's a very good voice!) and it's not about how 'tight and pro' the song
sounds. This song is about heart, and honesty and sharing a musical
soul. In so many ways, it's better than a slick-produced piece with
"Melodyne and sparkle."
It's like we were all sitting around a campfire somewhere up in the
canyon and Blaine takes out the guitar and starts to sing. That kind of
wonderful spontaniety and soul.
I only wish I could pick up a harmony and sing along...
Very nice. Thanks for posting this :)

Therefor I am...I think.
Thank you Myst...for someone with as lovely a voice as yours, to leave a
comment like that for me...well, that pretty much makes my day.
Who knows...maybe I just will have another go at it...now that I have strings, and
a microphone. I love this place...what great inspiration! Thanks.

Surprising... &mdash 11/22/05 - 01:32:59 AM
Listening to this is like being invited into your living room. It's very
intimate, so it's also like being invited into your soul.
You played the guitar like it's a life-long friend. You sing like you mean it.
Thanks for this song, Blaine. [ Reply to This ]

Good job on the improv. I love listening to stuff like this because it helps
give me a little inspiration to get out of my usual rut. My "bag of tricks" is
so limited ... thanks for the droning rythm, the roughness of the entire
project, and the soul you put into it. [ Reply to This ]

that's one of the things I love about just cruising MJ...coming across music that

I stumbled across this one .... &mdash 04/20/08 - 01:01:32 AM
.. and while listening I just found myself sort of jamming along with it .... head swaying .. humming along ... and then I remembered .. hey didn't I do that once upon a time on one of your tunes ..... your stuff has that invitability quality to it .. that makes one just wanna jump on the ride ! GAD I wish I knew how to play that guitar that is gathering dust in the corner of my basement! [ Reply to This ]
Stumbled indeed &mdash 05/20/08 - 11:13:03 PM
That pretty much sums it up for me, a practiced stumbler at that. Alanah you most certainly did play on a tune...Blue Shoes, beautiful heartfelt blues chops...posted here...no, now you have me looking. Crisis, What Crisis? So, I just resurrected my entire music library, it's taken months, broken like a like a china cup on marble, all glued back together...why isn't that here?
I had the opportunity to play just the shittiest old guitar on Sunday. The rust on the strings nearly tour my fingers off. I played the blues. It sounded so good I couldn't stand it.
Thanks Alanah...I'm digging right now for that blues track.

wow &mdash 05/21/08 - 12:16:51 AM
That this is all improv is so amazing! The lyrics are great - the message, the vocals, the harmonies. And your guitar playing is beautiful - great tone. I'm looking forward to listening to more of your stuff. Definitely had me feeling like sitting around a campfire and jamming. This is a really great song - thanks! [ Reply to This ]
