Interesting change... &mdash 11/09/05 - 09:36:04 AM
...of style. Is this the beginning of a darker caroline? Is black becoming
the new pink? Is solid metal replacing fluffiness?

I doubt it, but this is a good track either way :)

glad you liked it ein-stein - i wouldn't mind those black days being fewer and there being more pink and fluffy but it has been interesting to run with this none the less xxx

You cannot fully enjoy the beauty of pink unless it is tinged with
darkness for contrast. I can feel you sinking into that post-party-
depression now, the collapsing hostess syndrome... This is a very
personal heartfelt rendition of this piece of Americana, recorded just
how it should be, in somebody's living room. The only thing missing is
the squeak of the rocking chair in the background as you play. Quite
touching... and although I like this, I do expect to see you pop out of
this in a day or so, and be your silly frilly (other) self again. I imagine
this will not be the only time we get to see the "Carolilith" side of you
though.

Drakonis

Fairy Beth was 100% spot on Caroline, this is great. Your voice is so
fine and you have such emotional behind it. The simplicity of your
presentation makes this song all the stronger. Bravo.-JAC

Drakonis hit the nail on the head huh ?
When we compare normality to the heights of creativity, hospitality and camaraderie - it does tend to look a little grey.
Snowball, Reverb & Soulful You go really well together.
If I have a plea it's for a teensy introductory something (one bar will do) so it doesn't surprise me quite so much ! (I keep thinking I've c'kdup and started playing it in the wrong place)

thanks dom - i'll remember that next time - if i'm going to be miserable i might as well have a little intro eh? aw - you came and commented on my pain (!)... feeling better already! xxx

[ Reply to This ]
What goes up ... &mdash 11/09/05 - 05:44:37 PM
Absolutely - and you simply must have an intro to any expression of your pain - here's a few of my favourites :-

I probably shouldn't be telling you this but ...
As I was telling my sponsor the other day ...
I don't mean to moan but ...
It's probably my own fault but ...
You see ? Without an intro you don't appreciate the full context of the pain.
In all seriousness I hope this was a momentary lapse of pink cloud and that yours descends to envelop you once more - lifting only to give us glimpses of the artist behind the pinny !

Big Love

D

Wonderful performance. I'm with Beth on this. It's perfect.

I also agree with drak - I think this is the low after an extreme high. :)

Nicely done! &mdash 11/09/05 - 04:02:38 PM
I think I like this the best so far -- not because of dark/light black/
pink, but because there was a touching emotional quality in the vocals.
The guitar was played with quiet understatement, which fit the mood
perfectly. This is just a really nice version of this wonderful old song.

I had a really crappy day today too. One of those ones where you try
listening to uplifting music to cheer you up but end up saying "screw it.
I'd rather be miserable!" This was beautifully yet darkly sung, almost
depressing. In other words, perfect for my current mood.... and
surprisingly I found it picked my spirits up. Go figure.

on my third listen. can't get enough. you say it's american as if you
shouldn't be singing it, this is a beautiful rendition. and the yankee
doodlee dum line has a tinge of irony with your accent. :)

Very, very well sung, Caroline. Very evocative of a kind of resolute
despair. Sorry to hear about your mood, but if this gem is the result, it
wasn't for naught.

A great old song &mdash 11/10/05 - 12:19:56 PM
I'm not quite sure what you meant by " i know it's american but i sing it with the greatest of respect", but you sure sing it with feeling! This is a song by one of my favorite lyricists E.Y. "Yip" Harburg, who wrote lyrics for "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", and "Paper Moon", among many others. Thanks for posting.

A great old song &mdash 11/10/05 - 02:16:40 PM
what did i mean? hmmm.... i think that english folk tunes are a misunderstood genre - ask rebsie - and i didn't want to misunderstand or misinterpret a song that i associate so strongly with america - didn't want to get it wrong, didn't want to offend. i didn't realize the pedigree of the lyrics - no wonder i like them so much - thank you for that x

Going back to where I've Never Been &mdash 11/28/05 - 01:28:12 PM
The lack of production added to the quality of the final track. I found
myself drifting with the music and getting lost in a daydream. This track
is all about atmosphere. Very cool.

Fabulous &mdash 03/06/06 - 09:21:30 PM
I love this song. the first time I heard it was George Michael's version. And your rendition is better, more authentic sounding.

This is perfect as it is...

...But I wonder how it would sound if it was "aged." Add an effeect to create some pops and scratches and hiss, to make it sound like an old gramaphone. it'd really feel like it was recorded in the 30's.

I hear a heartfelt performance here. Thanks, Caroline, for sharing this.
Is that you on guitar? You've got a lot of good technique.

This sounds like a song which might have easily found a place on the
soundtrack to the movie "Brother Where Art Thou?"

Best,

John

Impressive results ... &mdash 04/30/06 - 11:52:30 AM
just vocal and classical nylon string guitar (if I'm not mistaken) ...and
one take?

Great voice. I just thought you might try (with songs that go this low in
bits - using your capo, one fret at a time at see if it becomes a problem
for you on the higher end - this is because I thought your voice is best
somewhere in the middle ... so move the song around that window.

Having said that, did I mention you also do a mean salty sailor !

Timbers well and trully shivered.
