Sonnet 138 (Tom Wounded mix) - When My Love Swears

Description
Tom Wounded sez: I really like the tone and deep vibrato of Rich's voice and working on a version of When My Love Swears has been enjoyable. I wanted to layer new textures on the song and see what would come out of it, a lot of fun really. Rich sent me an archived GB file of his singing and rythym guitar, so I was excited to add the additional accents.

Rich sez: Tom sent me this nice surprise after he had the GB file for not quite a week. I really like what I hear here. Cool counterpoint between the two sets of lyrics and our voices.

The melody line Schletty sings for Shakespeare's sonnet is largely based on Jack Miller's fine rendition in our earlier-released trio of Sonnet 138 explorations. See http://www.macjams.com/artist/Postludes+Trio . Schletty worked out an acoustic guitar adaption for solo performance. The base that Tom worked from is here: http://www.schletty.com/music/WhenMyLoveSwears-S138_acoustic.mp3

Lyrics
Shakespeare's lyrics (sung by Rich):

When my love swears that she is made of truth,
I do believe her, though I know she lies,
That she might think me some untutor'd youth,
Unskilful in the world's false forgeries.
Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young,
Although I know my years be past the best,
I smiling credit her false-speaking tongue,
Outfacing faults in love with love's ill rest.
But wherefore says my love that she is young?
And wherefore say not I that I am old?
O, love's best habit is a soothing tongue,
And age, in love, loves not to have years told.
Therefore I'll lie with love, and love with me,
Since that our faults in love thus smother'd be.

-The Passionate Pilgrim (1599), William Shakespeare (precursor to Sonnet 138)

-----------------------

Tom's lyrics (sung by Tom):

Love is a fire that's burning everyone.
Nations go to war over you, my love, over you, my love.
Soldiers on the battlefields dying for you, my love.

Song Renewed
I thought I had heard the last arrangement of this, but I guess not. :)
Your voices mix very well - and the song is somewhat radically and
surprisingly transformed here with the additions and rearrangement. Very
well done.

Good collab. Nice mix and good vocals on both parts!
A catchy beat, as well.
Good job!

Shakespeare
is not one of my favorites, but this tune sounds good with
the words chosen. Richard your voice is very good on this song,
but what I really loved were the background vocals, those were
fantastic and my favorite part.
Now, I have to have Mr. Wounded for some background vocals on
my songs :)
Good collaboration guys.

Goes without saying
that im not best placed to comment on this song.
But as they say, I don't know whats good, but I know what I like.
This sounds reassuringly well produced, by which i mean
everything works nicely, and moreover you've got a nices tyle of
singing.
I also respect the idea of putting a cool poem to music aswell, i
recently did a dnb tune with someone "mcing" the rhyme of the ancient
mariner over the top.

On the ngative, the excess of echo on the chorus makes it sound a
little cheesy in my book.

Great Music
Music was extremely well done! My own personal taste could have used
a little less reverb/echo on the counter point vocal. The lyric that wars
are fought because of love came off as nonsensical at best and
disgusting at worse. I know poetic license and you were just trying to
have a dramatic symbolism. But the idea that the very worst thing that
humanity has ever done is for the wonderful emotion of love is just not
computing. We blew the arms and legs off of that Iraqui boy for love?

Tom was thinking Helen of Troy. I'll let him say more about that. I agree that
there may be a disconnect between Shakepeare's theme of "lovers quietly
accepting mutually comforting lies in their advancing years" and the theme of
"anything for the love of a woman". But Tom's chorus sounds so cool that
many people don't care what he's singing. Maybe I was careless in allowing
Tom to enfold his lyrics into the Shakespeare sonnet. Maybe not. It's an
experiment, man. Hopefully, this will spawn something in another artist. It
was just too cool to not post.

Yes, I thought of the Helen of Troy angle also and if it had been pitched that
way as referring to one mythical war and not all of them in general then I
could have accepted that. Of course, I am maybe over-reacting. As you point
out most people pay no attention to the lyrics if it sounds good and I did like
the music as I pointed out. I came into songwriting from writing poetry so I
always pay more attention to the words than most folks.

Great Music
I pay LOTS of attention to the words, too. I also came to music via my own
tortured poetry. I am making an exception to my rule with this song. Her are
some other thoughts I penned to Tom, just so you know I was on top of the
dilemma from the start:

"Tom:

After I was able to relax, and with zero ambient noise in the room, I listened
to your mix of WMLS several times. I think it's a rap. I like it very much. The
percussion, electric guitar and organ are superb. I do understand your words
now. There is an interesting counterpoint not just with your ambient vocals
but with the words you sing...another take on the dynamics of a man's
relationship to a woman. Shakespeare speaks of the lies lovers whisper to
each other in advancing years...lies that keep them in each other's
embrace...call it "gentle conquest and control". War is like an invasion of a
tent wherein lies the forbidden fruit -- the daughter of the foreign king.
One's passion to consummate such a union can be all-consuming and beyond
reason.

I'd like to post this song as is and see what reaction it gets. I think it will do
well. Could you send me whatever you'd like to say for song description,
hardware and software?

Very professionally done! I'd love to do another collab. Thanks again.

Richard Schletty"

Bronco, first of all thank you for your commentary, I am always interested in
all veiws and opinions, When I added the lyrics to When My Love Swears I
couldve easily expanded on the themes contained within the sonnet, but I
chose not to inorder to give the verse and chorus some contrast and I guess
it worked. The sonnet's passages of love are beautifully written as only
shakespeare could write them. With my lyrics I tried to show the extremes of
tragedy in which people go through all in the name of love, be it crimes of
passion or war on a large scale. In no way did I intend for the lyrics to glorify
war and I am sorry if you took it that way, but I often like to hold a mirror up
to humanity and I guess in this case it was done indirectly, which is good in
my opinion>It is my firm believe that we as humans need to further
evolve...the lyrics really don't state any opinion, they just exist as they are,
just as if a movie might tell a story without saying if the events are right or
wrong.
