Keywords:
Politics (34)religion (27)dissatisfaction (1)lies (20)hate (43)
Description:
I've been itching to try out my new mic, so I decided to see how quickly I could put something together from scratch. This was just over 5 hours (including a supper breaks and changing the loads in the laundry). It's rough, but hey, the real purpose was to test the mic. I solved some of the problems I initially had with the mic, thanks to the help of some fellow MacJammers and a relocation of my recording equipment.

The song is just my standard dissatisfaction with the BS we are being handed by political, social and religious leaders these days. It's a little rough. Might smooth it out some later.

And for those of you familiar with some of my previous works, notice just how little reverb I used (except on the piano.) :)

Lyrics:
We both know, time changes every thing
ebb and flow, the blind will finally see

Tell the world, your fairy tale
find the fear, while you make believe

Can you stand on the stage
and tell the world your lies

Will you stay on your knees
while our freedoms slowly die

We can’t see eye to eye
I won’t believe your lies
We can’t see eye to eye
If you’re looking at the ground
and I -
I’m looking at the sky

See the smiles, that hide the hate
speak of love, but fuel the rage

Hide the words, and hide the truth
seperate those, who disagree

Will you face the world
with hate behind your eyes

Keep people on their knees
while their free-doms slowly die

We can’t see eye to eye
I won’t believe your lies
We can’t see eye to eye
If you’re looking at the ground
and I -
I’m looking at the sky

We both know, time changes every thing
ebb and flow, the lost will finally see

Tell the world, your fairy tale
find the fear, while you make believe

to hearng more with your new mic. It captures your voice very well - your
voice conveys (to me) a sense of fragility and innocence (which with lyrics
sometimes conveys innocence lost).
I hope you do work on a smoother version or incorporate some of these
lyrics and ideas into something else.

You pegged me, just a fragile and innocent little flower. :)

I appreciate the comments. There are a lot of things in this song I like. I've got some other stuff I want to finish in the next few weeks, but I think I'll definitely revisit this one.

Very cool to hear your voice through the new mic, J! Who needs reverb
when you've got good recording. I'm excited because it means
Rebecca's voice will come through a good mic, too. Yay! (Not to
mention Neil)

This song is a great start and, like Mungo, I'd love to see you develop it
into a more polished version. In a few spots, your vocal goes a little out
of key at the end of a line, but I think it's mild enough that you could
apply a little tuning correction and that would take care of it.

The chorus is especially catchy.

I can't wait until Rebecca gets a chance to use the new mic as well. She's just getting over a cold and is heading into finals, so it will still be a while probably. She has at least two tunes in the works, one of which is a collaboration between the two of us (she sings). We figured we've been together for almost 18 years now, so working on a song together might not destroy our marriage. :D

By the time I had recorded the lead vocals on this one, I had recorded and trashed them about half a dozen times, so my voice was a little tired. I always forget about the tuning correction, though, until someone mentions it in a comment. I'll give it a whirl and see what happens.

Thanks for listening, Lisa. And thanks for your support.

It's a very nice mic &mdash 11/14/05 - 08:02:27 AM
Thank you Jg, for being willing to bare your soul by turning off the
reverb. I liked it that way and didn't know that you were using it, until I
went back and was reading some of your previous comments. This is a
very clean recording and production.

The lyrics were as they always are, top notch, heartfelt and clearly,
from a place of truth... It's funny, my next forum post I've been itching
to ask, 'why do you always hear the inmates of one political party say
things like, 'I am proud to be an american', but that you never hear
these words being spouted out from the other cell blocks... And, what
type of person flies the american flag..., Curious me - Answers and
questions to come I'm sure.

I always enjoy the 'space' of your tunes and how this simplicity can
pack so much power. It's about sincerity of content, I do believe... And
it goes w/o saying, that I'm always attracted to your vocals..., - Reverb
aside, they always sound like they're coming from a real person...

Thanks for including us in the mic check, JG

A very nice mic, indeed...

Dion

The other day as I was cleaning up my MP3 collection, I was listening to some of my favorite commercial stuff and I realized with some of my favorite artists (mostly from the early 80s) that they used a whole lot of reverb. I think that's where my addicition comes from. That and my insecurities about the sound of my voice.

Your comments about a song sounding like it came from "a real person" got me thinking, and I think that's one of the things that has attracted me to MacJams and homegrown and recorded music. Even most of the best commercial music doesn't sound like it's come from a "real person." It's gone through so many filters that the realness is gone. Even a simple "ooh baby" pop tune sounds better, to me anyway, because you know on the other side there is another actual person, not a "star," who is spending their precious free time making something they enjoy. It's not a business.

Thanks for the comments and the points to ponder, Dion. You've gotten a good knack at asking questions and bringing up points for discussion. If you ever decide you want to be underpaid, underappreciated and overworked, you ought to go into journalism. :D

Great Vocal Capture! &mdash 11/14/05 - 02:01:12 PM
And Not just The Mic. (Though it seems Very Honest and Detailed).

Reconfiguring one's rig, as I recently did, is BIG. Amazing how haphazard
we get just adding things and not caring for the signal flow.

Fine Piece with a Great MIx.

Best,
Coop

PS I LOVE Reverb, Mea Culpa.

Great Vocal Capture! &mdash 11/15/05 - 03:03:56 AM
Thanks for the comments, RT!

It's kind of funny that the setup I use now is fairly cheap compared to the system
my friends and I pieced together in college to record, even if you include the
iBook. We had a room full of mics, mixers, amps, all run into what, at the time,
was a state of the art Fostex 4-track recorder. By the time we got set up, we
didn't really want to record any more.

Now all I need is a corner of the spare room. Ain't technology great!

Sounds Good to Me &mdash 11/15/05 - 08:50:24 AM
Doesn't sound rough at all to me. Of course that just maybe in
comparison with my stuff. The out of tune singing is not enough to
worry about. Neil Young has made a fortune with much more than this
as his trademark. I think that's what some folks miss these days is that
if you look at the great artists (not singers), they all have very distinct
but less than perfect voices. When you hear a Bob Dylan, Van Morrison,
Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson song, you know who it is in
the first bar. It is that individuality (along with writing great lyrics and
the ability to communicate those lyrics) that set them apart and made
them more than pop stars. And my vote is that your voice sounds great
without the reverb and makes your lyrics stand out and be more
accessible.

Sounds Good to Me &mdash 11/15/05 - 12:12:38 PM
Thanks for the comments, Tom. Several of the artists you mentioned are ones I think about when I worry about how my vocals sound. I'd much rather write good lyrics and sing them with a less-than-perfect voice than have a great voice and nothing decent to sing. Nowadays as long as the cats don't freak and the dogs don't howl I'm pretty pleased. I appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment.

Thanks Steve, 'preciate it. I've seriously got to start listening to some NY. The
only stuff I have is with Crosby, Stills and Nash (some of my all-time favorites).
Thanks for stopping by and listening.

Lesson in panning! &mdash 12/13/05 - 11:50:07 PM
Love the lead guitar panned left and right, and the surround sound background vox! Very full, complete sound. Wow, there's a whole other world out there in terms of production. This song is a great example of how to enhance an already solid performance. Love the potential, but to me it's pretty good as is.
