Description:
I tried to paint a picture with this song. Layering the paint, so to speak, over a simple drawing. In this case, the simple drawing would be a piano statement, followed by the layering of percussion instruments, violins, cellos, acoustic guitar, other embellishments, and eventually an English horn.

Very soothing - very well composed &mdash 11/21/05 - 07:35:57 AM
Great style, almost reminds me of Bruce Hornsby in a way. Especially
when i heard the piano rightt off. A terrific piece here, truly one of the
very best comtemporary-pop-easy-listening instrumentals I;ve heard
others do at MJ. You have a very nice musical maturity in your
compositions.

Great structure and comtemporary beauty!

"...musical maturity..." That's a nice thing to hear from you. Thank you.

I have great respect for Bruce Hornsby. I can't touch his piano playing. All I can
do is play what I can and hope it works in the context of the song.

I'm pleased you like this song, Bill.

Excellent &mdash 11/21/05 - 09:21:18 AM
Excellent New Age chord progression, with really nice open jazz voicings,
well done easy listening soft jazz mix, great choice in layered sounds,
very cinematic palette, interesting theme and variations, but the
composition transcends labels, is truly wonderful. I really like this.

Thank you for your typically attentive listen. That you see this composition as
transcending labels is very meaningful to me. We are all constantly looking for
our own voices. Your comment inspires me to continue doing so.

I am moved by what you wrote here, Tobin. Thank you very much.

Having a musician of your caliber participating as fully as you do here is a huge
asset to this site. I am not the only one who is very grateful.

Wonderful &mdash 11/22/05 - 03:39:49 AM
Wonderful, especially that basic theme that the piano does. Also on bass
and drums you make a good job. Isn't it difficult to make good drums on
a keyboard? Seems to me anyway (on the other hand I know nothing of
keyboard playing).

Wonderful &mdash 11/22/05 - 05:39:27 PM
I have long been hoping you'd stop by and listen to one of my songs, Mr. Curry.
Your playing is exquisite, and I am in awe of your musicianship. I am very
pleased to hear these nice words from you.

Because of the magic in your hands, I think you would not experience great
difficulty learning to play drums and other percussion instruments on a
keyboard. With the music that flows from your fingers, I think you could create
excellent and effective rhythm tracks.

Thank you for listening and commenting. I am very grateful.

Sr. Ortiz, thank you so much for listening and leaving your thoughts. After
the first statement by the piano, this song emphasizes the groove to a great
extent. That a master of percussion enjoyed this song is very meaningful to
me.

You are correct - this song did require a great deal of work. Your noticing
that indicates the great amount of experience you have making recordings,
which is obvious in your song, Nunca Contigo (pero ahora, después de
escuchando a tu canción, todos de aquí están contigo).

And I like that it's not all pastel-sounding but you've mixed in some

A lot of my favorite music is like this - variations on a theme. You do this
very well.

Thank you for the very valid graphic artist's view of the song. How great it would
be to have that perspective during the composing process, and before a final
mix of a song is done... Even without you in my studio I will try to keep that
perspective in mind in the future as I compose.

Thank you for your thoughts, Mr. Mungo, which I found quite valuable.

I think in many cases it takes a bit of a stretch for people to accept the kind of
music I write. I appreciate your having made that stretch. "...pleasing,
mesmorizing..." is certainly what I was looking for. I'm very gratified that this
song had that effect on you.

Thank you for listening and commenting, Tom.

that a wonderful thing. For a composer to hear that his music can invoke such a
state is quite inspiring.

My goodness, what a wonderful experience reading your very kind, and even
poetic, words, Lisa.

The most enjoyable experience for a composer is just how you described it - it's
when you rather get out of the way and let the music come through you, rather
than from you. I'm not sure if that happened with this piece or not, or to what
extent. If it struck you as if that is what happened here, I am very well pleased.

In any case, I am most grateful that you listened, and that you took the time to
tell me what you did. I am moved by what you wrote, Lisa. Thank you so much.

Very evocative &mdash 01/11/06 - 12:19:59 AM
You are a master at this - thoughtful music, with something to suggest within an aural canopy......there are some moments a quarter in that don't match the brilliance of the rest of the composition - some of the harmonies aren't lining up, it seems dissonant only because, I don't know, maybe you weren't going there - because I felt your heart from the get-go, and it seemed to get muddled, the idea, the beauty, the concept, somewhere about mid-way, but then the atmosphere picks up, percussively and then it really rises to the fore. All in all, a wonderful piece, orchestrations are incredible, the mood is unmistakable....the middle section, a little work needed - everything else - sweet, sweet, oh, those voices are indeed a nice touch. Yeah! Ya! Yay! Okay, I'll calm down now......well done..

[ Reply to This ]
Very evocative &mdash 01/25/06 - 09:30:03 PM
Thank you, Bing, for the very nice comments.

Interestingly enough, the song began from the middle section. I kept it for
over a year without knowing what to do with it; I did know that I liked it
enough that I was not going to give up on it. Finally I came up with the piano
line that comprises the first and third sections, and orchestrated those
sections to provide variations on the theme. It's interesting that the original
section struck you as dissonant.

I do appreciate your giving me your perspective.

It is a different view, after all...

What to say about this &mdash 01/18/06 - 04:33:57 PM
This is a wonderful piece of music here. A very solid composition.

I don't know what to say to an accomplished musician w/o coming off
as sounding kind of silly; trying to explain what I liked about all of the
intricacies that went into producing a tune like this. I almost get the
feeling that you are like another Mcboy, Partick. As in, you are likely a
well known, *famous* and that you are an established artist. And, that
we are kinda like the 'cat's mouse toy'. This is what I get from listening
to your music.

As a person, or from your presence here, I get more of the same...
This is not meant to be a dig unless of course, it is true, otherwise, it's
a phat compliment. Thank you for being here, at MJS' - All diggn'
aside, you keep high, the bar here... And I am truly inspired... - Thanks

Dion,

I'm very glad to hear that this piece inspires you. That is a high compliment.

As for who I really am, I'm just a music director of a church who has written a lot
of music for corporate productions and other things over the years. I continue to
write for such projects. MacJams is an outlet for music I write for my own
enjoyment, rather than for clients.

I have experience, but I am not at all famous or well-known. It's nice that you
thought I was, though. Thank you.

What on earth &mdash 01/24/06 - 02:14:51 PM
took me so long to find this? I really enjoyed listening to this song--it's so natural and smooth. I used to listen to some new age albums a lot (I'm thinking of Philip Aaberg's "Shape of the Land" soundtrack, for one), and this takes me back to that time (late 80's) and place... though you're using a richer array of instruments. I'm experimenting a lot with Garageband's symphonic instruments, trying to make music out of them--this is a great example of the (probably, for me) unattainable standard of excellence that I'm aiming towards. Great work Patrick!

What on earth &mdash 01/25/06 - 09:38:37 PM
Thank you so much, David. I spent quite a bit of time on the percussion
instruments on this song, so to hear this from a guy who has such command of
rhythm tracks is quite a treat.

This piece is very lightly orchestrated - besides the piano and guitar, only
strings and English horn. I'd venture to say that this level of orchestration is
quite attainable by you. I'll be interested in tracking your progress in that
regard.

I'm very grateful you listened to a track of mine and commented, David.

Paints a picture &mdash 02/27/06 - 05:15:39 PM
Maybe it's because the picture reminds me of a beach in Ireland near where they filmed, "Far and Away," or maybe it's because your song reminds me of the film, "The Indian in the Cupboard," but your song reminds me of tranquility. It'
