Keywords:
redeux (16)collaboration (104)
Description:
This is a collab with "themasses" who heard the original track and offered to lay down live drums for me. His excellent addition to this has brought a whole new edge to the sound and an energy that was lacking in the somewhat static first post of this tune. Thanks Kevin for your generosity with your time, creativity and wealth of talent.

I've left up the original track for posterity's sake. Hope you like this (in my opinion) much improved version.

Lyrics:
would you fall away with me
to some better place
to a place that's caught
holding heaven in between

And I would take you there
Maybe stumbling through the door
And I would take you here
If only you'd rise off the floor

Like an autumn leaf
Blown across the street
I might float away
On the winds of change

Hardware:
g4 ibook, built in mic, johnston millenium amp, heritage semi-hollow body guitar

I like it a lot. Good vocal; good playing as well. It sounds to me like the
vocal is coming mostly from the left channel. Is that part of the mix, or is
it just my speakers or something? Anyway, nice job.

Thanks for your comments. I'm glad you like the tune. The vocal is mixed a
little to the left, though the doubled up track is up the middle. Just playing
around a bit with the stereo field.

Wow &mdash 11/26/05 - 09:06:58 AM
This is sooo good. The lyrics are simple but very powerful to me. Guitars
and drums are excellent but it's the impassioned vocal that makes the
song what it is... wonderful! Great job!

truly excellent &mdash 11/26/05 - 02:15:40 PM
What a great song and a great singing performance. Everything is top
notch except for some issues with levels in the mix. I think a lot of the
mix could be brought up louder to meet the vocals, particularly the guitar
that comes in on the right. Maybe the bass and drums could come up
some as well. Other than those issues with some things being too quiet
this sounds fantastic. Really well written and arranged. The drums sound
great and your vocals are exquisite.

Thanks pgreenstone! I think your comments on the mix are right. One of the
key things my set up is missing are some decent, reliable monitors. I listened
to this track on a friends computer and was quite shocked at the difference I
heard. I may yet do a remix at some point. I'm glad you commented on the
drums. Kevin's performance here really brought an edge out in the song that
I had missed earlier. The difference between a good live drummer and a
drum loop are paramount to me, and this track is a good example of why.

Okay &mdash 11/27/05 - 08:54:15 PM
First Kris, thanks for the kind words.
Second, thanks for an extremely enjoyable and rewarding collab.
I had to listen to this version alot before commenting, having heard it
so many times as a different mix.
I really like the energy boost that you've given it. I think that you could
push it much further in this direction. I particularly enjoy the new lead
guitar riffs. The rhythms flowed more passionately, but of course now
the drums should be adjusted to accent those changes. :)
I really look forward to hearing this tune when you record it with a real
band, hopefully soon.
Cheers Kris
Always ready to make more music with you.

PS I can't believe that this started in March!

Very cool. Great vocals man. They fir very well with the 'feel' of the track.
The quality is really good, did you really record it on the iBooks built in
mic!?

excellent guitar work. very relaxing. What effect have you got on the
vocals? they sound very cool.

nice work dude

Thanks for your enthusiasm for the tune! yes, I did use just the built in mic
from the ibook. For the guitars, I placed the laptop in front of the amp. The
mic isn't great, but it could be alot worse. For the vocals, I always like to use
a fair bit of delay and reverb (many would suggest I use it too much), and for
this track, I doubled the vocals up as well which I think worked out okay.
Anyways, thanks for your comments.

nice full sound &mdash 11/30/05 - 09:19:14 PM
Great track - would love to hear it with a decent mic. Love the vocals, the feel, the 3/4 (or 6/8, whatever it is - never much good at that stuff) - nice full sound. Maybe the doubled vox could be split a bit more between the channels so the balance is restored. Whatever - great piece of work - hope we don't have to wait another 7 months for the next song!

nice full sound &mdash 12/09/05 - 11:26:28 PM
Thanks. Yes, there is some compesation here for a lacking set up. What kills
me is that I've got a beautiful Rhode NTV mic that I can't use for lack of a
preamp! Soon....soon I'll get my gear together. Still, the ibook does better
than I ever expected. Thanks for commenting.

Very cool and melodramatic! &mdash 11/30/05 - 11:20:53 PM
Great tune! More like tuna than Bologna! Killa chord work! Do you do window treatments too! Drums sound extra special! I almost lost it! Great song Girls! Hahahaha!

Like that falsetto singing especially, whole tune has a nice current feeling.

Very nice &mdash 12/01/05 - 05:10:44 PM
The singing is the highlight, I think, but I'm liking the guitar and drums in here too. Live drumming Kevin? Thats some really good playing, and I love the drum and cymbal sounds.

really nice &mdash 12/02/05 - 08:56:40 AM
The live drums really do make the diffence. Sounds a little like early Chris Whitely, and that's a good thing in my book. You've got a great voice and a good mic would make a big difference. Effects on the vocal are cool but I get the feeling they are masking a sort of sub-standard recording quality in the vocal sound. Actually the guitar, though pretty good, also sounds a little buried by the recording technique but you get away with it because it's got an appropriately dirty sound. Great drums! Great song!

a little bit of Chris Cornell &mdash 12/13/05 - 06:08:35 AM
in the melodies. Reminds me of his Temple of the Dog era stuff. The
instrumental performance is very nice but I think the piece could be
produced better overall - the vocals are so "up front" that the music gets
lost a bit. I think the guitar is strong enough that you can bring it up a bit,
and I'd like to hear the drums EQed for a smarter, sharper sound.

But, that said, the songwriting is so strong that the production quibbles I
have are minor. This is one of the best pieces I've heard on the site - one
that is actually worth downloading and listening too!

First of all &mdash 03/20/06 - 08:05:53 AM
Sorry for noticing this so late, but I guess late is better than never, right?

This sounds really good, you guys. Very cool.
I agree with previous commentators about the mix (not that is bad as it is,
it just could be a bit better :)). But I think it's your vocal performance that
shines through for me. They really fit the mood of the song.

Nice work - kudos to both of you!

Listened to the old &mdash 04/29/06 - 09:38:45 AM
now listened to the new. well I like both and how excellent to have
someone just give their talent and romp a bom boom bang drum for you.
How cool. I think u2 listened to U2 and got an idea for 1 of their new
songs....Your voice is a chameleon, highly developed and can change,
after listening to Last Night and wanting to hear more of what you have
done I am sooo very impressed. The whole wide world should be hearing
this voice and your songs. Okay I'm off to listen to some more of the
Hammhock Really professional quality music here. exceptional thanx

Really like this tune!! &mdash 04/29/06 - 10:43:26 AM
Excellent riffs and vocals! I ended up here due to your post regarding
your tune "Last Night". To me this has mucho commercial appeal. The
only thing that kinda bugged me was the guitar biased left and the vocals
biased right. Would have prefered them to be more centered.

Overall, a killer tune!!
