Like the harmony, like the touch of Neil Young sound in your voice.
I am not sure if I heard the harmonization quite like this on any other of
your songs. Maybe you do but I thought they were very well done. Keep
that going. Nice guitar work, good instrumention.

I've done some similar harmonies on a couple of other tunes. I'm still
experimenting with getting a rich, big almost choral sound with the harmonies.
The pict was taken last week at a place near my home called Point Pleasant. The
water is very low this time of year, so you can walk way out into the lake bed. It's
a very desolate and beautiful landscape, especially as the day begins to fade.
Thanks for listening and for your comments. I'm glad you liked my tune.

I think this is very nice, might be the best i have heard from you. It builds up in a way i foind very pleasing. The instrumentation reminds me a little of cranberries, specially the very beginning of the intro! This tune reminds me of something that i cant really recall at the time, there is something with the harmonyvocals. What a great tune!! Downloaded and faved! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks for your comments and support selters! I'm a fan of the Cranberries and
have been for a while. I'd never thought of a comparison with the
instrumentation, but now that you've mentioned it, I can see it. Glad you enjoyed
it!

Hi! &mdash 11/28/05 - 08:18:54 PM
Hey ig,
this is DoomedWorld...wanted to say that this is an interesting concept
you have; putting 2 songs into one...doesn't it get kinda tricky
'synching' them up? Anyway...like where it's going...I'm gonna go
mingle among the jammers...TTYL! [ Reply to This ]
Hi! &mdash 11/28/05 - 10:58:18 PM
Thanks for listening. The production on this was a little trickier than usual since
the two tunes are both at different tempos, but it worked out. I appreciate you
taking the time to comment, DoomedWorld, and welcome to MacJams.

Again, I must say JG, you do know how to bare your soul, and
beautifully so. You are very consistent... When I see your name alerting
me to a new song, I smile with the knowing that I have just received
another lasting treat.
Your lyrics are always captivating, and you never fail in reminding me
to just settle down and take note - And to realize, that I'm not the only
one - As far north as I reside, I often times feel like a southern boy too
- I got a chance to pause for moment this last weekend and was able
too look up to see the stars - Not much else mattered, as star gazing
always seems to put things into right perspective - It is one great big
sky - And mine is a small little world however, I treasure it all the
same...
I love the harmonies in this and that you did keep things as simple and
as pleasing as you always do.
Another nice production, JG - Thanks for sharing - D

On clear nights in the spring and summer when I was growing up, I'd sit
outside for hours at night and watch the stars go by overhead. I knew, even
when I was young, that everyone in the world looked up at the same sky and
the same stars as I did. It was mind blowing to think about that. It made the
surroundings of the "vast" world on the ground seem almost cozy. The stars
can really give us a sense of place. We stand on the edge of an infinite
vastness that we know, if we could just jump high enough, we'd tumble
through for eternity. It makes our little plot of Terra Firma seem that much
more meaningful, no matter where it is.
Thanks for your comments, and thanks, as always, for giving me through
your comments, the chance for a little reflection.

I really appreciate you comment, alley-opp, especially about the solos. My guitar
playing is similar to my typewriting in that it's the "hunt and peck" method.
Thanks for dropping in anc taking a listen.

Universal appeal &mdash 12/02/05 - 08:47:04 AM
There's much to like in this piece, from conception to production. The beginning doesn't feel like a separate song to me, rather, it works as a metaphorical opening to the main story. The mood struck from the music and from your singing is somber. Your fine, evocative performance aptly suggests the ongoing mental struggle over the classic "should I stay or should I go" question, and that for whatever reasons you've considered moving away, the tug of the land gives you a sense of place that calms those anxieties. Most of us have scrabbled with that question, which is why this piece has universal appeal, as you dramatically capture that battle and bring it to a decisive conclusion.
As for critical feedback, one thing I wonder about when I listen to "Southern Boy" is "what makes this Southern?" Nothing in the lyrics place it in a specific local setting. If you sang "I'm just a Northern boy" and "when I feel the wind and sky" it could just as well be about Montana or Saskatchewan instead of Mississippi. Even your singing doesn't carry a "Souithern" accent. This said, I don't know that I would change much (if anything), because I think it is that universal quality in the lyrics and your singing that make it so appealing. [ Reply to This ]
Universal appeal &mdash 12/02/05 - 09:59:23 PM
Just like the decision to leave a place and the desire to come back, every time
I think I'm done with my "sense of place" period, I seem to come back to it. I
take it to mean I still have something to learn from it. Once I learn the lesson,
I'll be able to move on. For now, I'll just go with where the music takes me.
I think this is kind of a universal feeling among almost everyone. We all try to
find our places in the universe - physical, emotional, spiritual. And often they
all seem to be tied together. I hadn't really thought about the message of the
song going beyond being a "Souther Boy," but what you said makes sense.
There is no unique tie to this place other than those I have made myself. (And
I'm amazed that my Southern accent doesn't show throught, cause I have a
good'n.)
I appreciate you taking the time to listen to and comment on my tune,
Warren. The comments I've seen from you here on MJ are always very
interesting and insightful and I appreciate you turning you ear my way for a
few minutes.

I've always been very self-conscious about my voice. I've always thought it was
too high and too thin, so your comments are very much appreciated RT. Thanks
for listening. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Epic &mdash 12/05/05 - 07:02:51 AM
This is awesome work Joseph and a great performance. By far the best
one from you thus far, in my own opinion and taste of course. No need
to feel self-conscious in regards to your voice, it's getting better and
better, and it's truly yours, which mean you are not trying to sound like
somebody else. I thought the first songs I heard form you, you where
slightly out-of-tune at times with your vocals - this is all gone in your
latest songs which makes a huge difference. This song is very good in
all aspects: the guitar which is very haunting yet minimalistic in a way,
perfectly adding the notes - the vocals and harmonies how they play
aganst and for one and each other and build a great story to the very
good lyrics. Thank you J. PS. I've been away for some time, have moved
to a new creative location. [ Reply to This ]

Welcome back, Mikki!
This may be one of the more "complete" tunes I've done. There's not really
anything in it I'm unhappy with. It also pushed me a little bit technically in
that I had to figure out a few new things while I was mixing both of the songs
individually and then together.
I appreciate your comments about my vocals. Finding a "style" has always
been a trick for me since I always think to myself "Gee, I'd like to sound like -
fill in the blank" (usually Sting). But as I grow more and more comfortable
with how my voice sounds once it's recorded, it encourages me to experiment
a little more.
Thanks again for listening and for your comment, Mikki. And I'm glad to see
you back around MJ!

Love the harmonies. The production of the background vox are perfect. They blend into the sound so well! How do you do that? Lyrics are beautiful as well. Thank you for sharing this here. Really, really nice. Great emotion in the guitar, drums and piano as well. Pulsing bass creates a nice sense of build. Man, this is goood. [ Reply to This ]
