bird flu (1)

Description:
This is some drivel I made with Mrs Topo. I mentioned it to stevel on the chat yonks ago but never really finished it. It's just a rudimentary bass groove and piano hook really.
I remixed it in bed with a nice cup of camomile and here it is - another offcut.
Don't know what the genre is - sounds a bit like the dance genre 'big beat' from a few years back I reckon.
Lyrics:
improvised, wife plays the modern languages
Hardware:
ibook, keystation 88es, cheap bass, guitar
Software:
Logic Express, Wife

Not sure about the genre but… &mdash 12/03/05 - 04:29:51 AM
it's The Happy Mondays, isn't it? Very Madchester at the very least.
Putting it in Dance/Club just wouldn't do it justice. I see your
dilemma. Which is a shame because putting it in Other can't be
dong you any favors either. Very funny, very funky… it's funnyky (I
just made that up!). I really dig this and hope more people check it
out. Inspired lunacy and topical too. Sorted! [ Reply to This ]

Or even doing you any favors… I really need to improve my
proofreading!

Oops, and I even spelt favour wrong (UK spelling!). Doh!

Woooh! Truly superb &mdash 12/03/05 - 03:34:32 PM
Very British sound you've got going here (apart from the French and
Spanish bits, obviously) ... I love it!
It's very funny, cynical and entertaining, and sounds incredibly
polished for an improv/offcut. Full of energy with some gorgeous
instrument sounds. If this is the stuff you can come up with when
you're just having a bit of fun I can't wait to hear your polished up
stuff! You've got some real talent here, and it's a delight to listen to.
Warblers of mass destruction ... brilliant!
My compliments to Mrs Topo. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Eppy and Rebs &mdash 12/04/05 - 04:47:54 AM
As you may have noticed I've got more stuff now beyond simply my
accoustic - Logic, recently aquired guitars, and a keyboard I can attach
to the computer.
The good news is I reckon I now have pretty much everything I need to
create all the kind of sounds I like without many compromises.
However to do it all justice needs patience and learning, so I'm slowly
taping few few 'good tracks' and releasing offcuts of demos and things
I don't think I'll have time to take further just for the fun of
MacJamming.
This track is by far the most 'produced' of the uploads, so I think I'm
getting slowly, or even quickly, to where I want to be. [ Reply to This ]

Really liked the piano groove.
Clever lyrics and well delivered ;)

caught the flu &mdash 12/04/05 - 12:29:38 PM
love the groove overall. your wife sounds great. there's a part where it
sound like there's a guitar solo trying to happen but it just doesn't
quite happen. the spoken parts are cool too. I was also missing more
high-end information and 16th note subdivisions happening. but that's
just me. [ Reply to This ]

Really like it...boy you are sounding really polished with that Logic magic
at your disposal. Must get it myself! I think that this is a really good
groove song. I like the satirical lyrics too.... if this is an offcut can't wait to
hear other songs you have been tinkering on in the studio

You will have to get Logic, steve - I'd love to see how you put all the extra
tools to great use!
One thing I like when chopping up the recorded audio is the 'search for zero
crossings' option, where you can slice tracks where the sound wave is at
'zero' - this means no 'pops' and 'clicks'. It's good on a more remixy thing
like this.
Also, even Logic Express has some nice extra instruments. This track has a
slight tweak of the abrasive 'IN yer Face' organ preset, the punchy 'bright
piano', and a analogue-style filter on the trumpet stabs. Easy to get carried
away.

too funny &mdash 12/07/05 - 01:47:13 PM
My wife's actually working with the bird flu. (Let's hope they come up
with a cure or some sort of prevention soon.) Anyway, I had to give your
song a listen for that reason alone. Good stuff. [ Reply to This ]

I really enjoyed listening to this song. Great lyrics and nicely executed.
Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for the comments &mdash 12/09/05 - 01:27:12 AM
I wanted to do a bird flu topical song and I think this works quite well.
As much of the public commentary about this topic is such headline-
grabbing throwaway nonsense with not much analysis, I thought a daft
throwaway song was the only response! [ Reply to This ]
indie pop &mdash 01/14/06 - 03:39:23 AM
Man - this is great and unhinged, and has a really serious message (!).
I'd say this is indie pop, in the spirit of those guts who did 'little birdhouse in your soul' - another avain connection! [ Reply to This ]
