Description:
A few months back MacAddict magazine had an article on how to get your Mac's voices into Garage Band. Very cool.

So, here is the first song that I gave it a try.

Don't worry. My loops are still there.

Welcome to my first Loop Song with lyrics.

I really enjoyed listening to this once it got cookin. At first the voices
distracted me because.. well my mac doesn't sing, but you did a great

Thanks for the nice comments.

I know what you mean about the voice. But no matter how strange it is to hear
the Mac, it is loads better than actually hearing ME sing.

If that was me, babies would cry, people's ears would start to bleed, wars would
erupt worldwide. Not a pretty thing to hear.

Thank you for the nice comments.

Don't think too much on the lyrics. When I made a new Garage Band file, I named
it "Life in a Day" without thinking that it would have lyrics.

As I placed the tracks, the rhythm said "Single Words" to me. So, I just started
playing around and single word association. The result is what you see above.

Then again... it was me with word association... maybe I'm revealing my true
inner self... now that's scary...

because it is so electronic. I don't ordinarily go for electronic stuff that
much but the computer voice tricks it out completely. It sounded like the
Apple singing through that modulator gadget that Cher and others seem
to use all the time these days. In that regard, it kind of parodies current
pop singers and I thought that was clever.

Better than average as the use of synth voices was clever but there's a pretty
strong feeling of loopishness and I'd focus on that in future tunes. (The song
remains in my favorites and that may help to understand my voting. I won't
lowball or highball anything)

I would rather have a song that rated a true 4.00 and be told what to do to
improve than a false 7.00 any day of the week.

Thank you for giving the vote you thought it deserved than just giving me lip
service. It's really appreciated.

And, by the way, there is nothing wrong with a 6-6-7-7.

Like the whole concept, like the theme words like in a day to make you
reflect. Nice claret ending, i am a real fan of that sound especially at the
end, love the acoustical qualities of that. With the words reflecting agains
the clarinet.

Interesting!

Thank you for your comments.

I played with the time signature and, for this piece, it worked. I went
from 3/4 (at the beginning - that's a harp with a voice change) to 4/4 back to
3/4 for the clarinet and so forth.

Since I was going through the trouble of a time signature change, I wanted to go
for a completely different "sound".

And that's the history of the clarinet in this piece.

without commenting, so here you are.

Full marks for having the guts to try new things. It is an interesting
concept from a technical standpoint and has intellectual artistic merit.

Musically, however, it reminded me of an old Friends episode where
Ross plays one of his songs to a less-than-enthusiastic audience at the
coffee house and any song with a title like this is going to invite
inevitable comparisons to Lennon/McCartney's A Day in the Life.

I remember that show. I told my wife about the comparison and she was on
the floor laughing.

But the song reminded you of the Ross episode... I'm crying here :'(

It wasn't until after I was putting the finishing touches on the song that I
thought about the Beatles tune. Maybe I named it subconsciously, hoping
some of the greatness would rub off...

But the Ross episode.... :'(

Not a bad song &mdash 12/07/05 - 07:00:06 AM
Normally I'm not a fan of loops... but here the loops and the
computerised voice fit in really well together. The have a slightly
repetitive, monotonous suggestion to them... loops are repetitive in
nature... and computers being based around logic and repetition...
everything fits in together conceptually quite well.

And even though you've used loops, you've kept it interesting which is
good (the vocals really help that). Not a bad song at all.

I really enjoy working with loops. I look back at my earlier stuff (and you can too
if you want to torture yourself) and it's amazing how I used to think that just
putting them on the track made the song. There is so much you can do with
loops. Garage Band is a very power program.

And I feel I have only scratched the surface.

Cyber Rap! &mdash 12/07/05 - 09:36:50 AM
Good fit for life in techo society.

Is there a way to alter the pitch and or speed of the voice? Just an
interesting thought.

[ Reply to This ]
Cyber Rap! &mdash 12/07/05 - 10:30:46 AM
Thanks for the nice comments.

The pitch can be done in Garage Band but only for that clip. You could probably
do it within a "word" but that would take some editing.

The speed can be done in the System Preferences. Under the voice, there is a
slider that allows you to adjust the speed. I only used it to get the right speed
and then didn't mess with it. But it is an interesting thought.

much better than Ross &mdash 12/07/05 - 09:44:27 AM
I've heard a couple of other tracks on MJ that use the
built in Mac voices. (maybe those were yours?) I really
like that basic idea, and want to try making one myself
someday.

I think you have used it to good artistic effect here, with
the the theme of the lyrics (very human) being at such
odds with the tone of the vocals. It's a nice, cold reduction
of the meaning of life.

I did think that maybe the vocals were too present in the
mix. I'd make them more subtle. It would also be nice
if they bounced around the stereo field a bit, instead of
always being dead center.

The timing of the vocals was nicely done.

I think this is a bajillion times better than Ross's song. :-)

much better than Ross &mdash 12/07/05 - 10:42:18 AM
This is my first "Mac Voice" track so I'm not the first :'(

It's very easy to do. The hard part is getting the timing of the voice. What I
ended up doing was recording a line at a time, clipping it down to a single
word, placing that word in the right spot, copying, move the clipping over to
the next word, etc.

I think making a complete phrase fit the music would be extremely difficult...
of course, I'm going to try.

The panning idea is a good one. I'll mess around with it. I did try to bring the
volume of the vocals down, but, them not being that clear, the words got
really lost. Maybe the panning might solve that problem.

It could be that snowdragon was referring to the quality of the Ross episode
and the value and humor it brought to the airwaves when it was seen, thus,
comparing it with the song was a compliment... yeah... that's it... (by the way,
snowdragon's music puts mine to shame and I highly recommend you take a
listen... so, in reality, compared to him, I am Ross)

Pretty great &mdash 12/07/05 - 11:52:25 AM
I dunno what the whole loop thing is about really.

My last track - Bird flu song - used live vocals, four original 'loops' I
made myself by playing the keyboard or bass guitar, one very modified
standard GB loop, a couple of fills from a free demo of a sample cd,
and the odd bit of effected accoustic guitar, all dressed up in verious
fx.

While I know it's more romantic to make all your tracks 100% from
scratch if a pre-made loop just fits the bill, I'm not going to try to
remove it or disguise it for religious reasons!

[ Reply to This ]
Pretty great &mdash 12/07/05 - 05:13:39 PM
Thank you for your comments.

I think what the problem falls into the "I can do that" syndrome.

With my earlier stuff I thought just placing the loop on the track in a very
interesting way would make it a good little tune.

But the comments were like "Hey, that's loop XYZ. I can do that"
Once you start getting people saying that, your tune, no matter how cool you
thought it was, loses that special spark.

Once I started messing with the loops I start getting people saying "Wow,
how did you do that?"

I have one tune (one of my favorites in terms of technical creativity) that was
created with drum tracks... without a single drum sound. Now that's cool.

Nothing wrong with placing a loop or three in a song as is. But, if you are
going to make your song with ONLY loops, make it so people say "Wow"
instead of "Oh, I can do that"

An interesting idea &mdash 12/07/05 - 09:03:48 PM
I gave an honest vote, since that's what you wanted. I have to admit a
bias against loops though, so you may have scored lower than you
deserved from some one else.

I do like your use of loops though, since you don't pretend to be
reaching for something higher.

I did lie the track, love the spacey, cool intro. I like the use of the
voices. Something I have been thinking of trying for some time, but I
wish there had been a bit more sophistication in the lyrics.

A bit doggerel, but again, since you didn't seem to be reaching for high
art, I have no problem with this. Not everything needs to be a sonnet.

Cool idea on the stats.

You owe me one. :)

[ Reply to This ]
An interesting idea &mdash 12/08/05 - 12:00:43 AM
Rate it how you hear it. The goal is to get the statistical 30 votes for true
validation. Don't hold back... I'm a big boy...

My goal with every loop song I make is to try to make the next one a little
better than the one before. To push myself and learn a different aspect of
Garage Band.

I was limited in my ability to make the lyrics match the music. I concentrated
on the technical side verse the artistic side.

I'm glad to hear someone else say that every song doesn't have to be a
sonnet.

And, as payback, I decided to give your neglected song Whacked a listen. Not for the faint of
heart but I actually found myself liking it... which disturbs me to no end.

So, a straight Vote would Dictate I give a "Needs Improvement" (a 4

Blunt instrument, these numbers! And this on a Fine and Interesting
Soundbed with High Kinetic Energy and Good Production Values.

You're Killing me! (or Better Yet, the System is). I LOVE the Lyrics.

So I request that you please rework the Vocal FX so the Philosopical
Color of the Lyric can make this piece Soar.

This is a fun piece, nice job with the loops. The computer voice seems a little harsh and loud in the mix, maybe bump the mids down a tad too? Seems like the drums could come up with a bit of fatness added to the kicks. LOVE the clarinet break (just saying "clarinet break" is cool), very spooky and deliciously wet. This is like a potential soundtrack to either a J-horror flick or the next "Blade" movie. Nice work!

Not the track - the track tempo is fine. Some folks were complaining
about not being able to understand the words - you could, if you
wanted to, slow down the computer's speech - it'd maybe make it
easier to discern all the words. Cool approach to a song, regardless.

I like the computer voice, and agree with some that it could be a bit
clearer in terms of intelligibility, but I'm not sure how much of a negative
this is. The ethos here is machine music, not warm, fuzzy, "human"
music, and I think the fuzziness of text (and it's not hugely so, anyway)
could arguably be seen as part of all this. It's a strong piece, and I hope
you keep at it.

I really loved this piece &mdash 04/03/06 - 10:37:12 AM
Whether you intended it or not, I found this piece to be a really moving commentary on our dependence on technology and the creation of artificial intelligence. And all the elements of the song add to these themes. You have loops, you have a computer generated voice emulating human speech, and you have words that are simple, childlike. The lyrics to me represent a non-human longing to become alive. The irony is that the computer's "life in a day" is not "Work/Play/Die...." And it will never be that.

I am so grateful for being alive after listening to this.
