Keywords:
Juleljus (1)Christmas (148)carol (21)Swedish (11)lights (14)hymn (11)
Description:
From Cori Ander:

Nu tändas tusen juleljus is one of the most loved Christmas hymns in my country. It was composed about one hundred years ago by a woman Emmy Köhler who is known almost only for this hymn.

It was great fun to try to teach Mysti to sing this song in Swedish, a language that for her is merely sound without much meaning. Swedish vowels are almost impossible to pronounce for English speakers so I recorded a home-made pronounciation lesson for Mysti to follow. And I am amazed about the final result. She has learned the whole song in this alien language, and it is clearly understandable!

Standing with one foot in American and one in Swedish culture, it is for me quite an adventure to hear this song. Up to now it has for me been deeply rooted as a Christmas hymn. Now I can hear it sung with American soul. It is a totally new mixture and experience.

I feel that Mysti's harmonies and improvised melodies are just wonderfully beautiful! The latter half of the tune starts my heart beating by joy! This music could give life to a mountain! Just listen to her singing the last verse...

From Mystified:

It's been an honor--and a lot of fun--to sing this traditional Swedish carol. And a delightful challenge!
Thanks so much to Curry for sending over a detailed pronunciation and explanation of this beautiful song--without which I might have ended up singing about "a thousand chiming Christmas swine," or somesuch!

Tack, Curry! :)

Additional players:
guitar--Berndt
bass--Jocke

*Thanks to Tom Atwood for doing the final mix of this song, and just for your overall support!

Lyrics:

Translation:

1) Now a thousand christmas candles are lit, on the dark earthly round.
And thousands, thousands are also shining (beaming) on the deep-blue ground of heaven.

2) And over city and land tonight, the happy message of Christmas is going--
That born is the Lord Jesus Christ, our Saviour and God.

3) You star over Betlehem, oh, let your mild light shine in with hope and peace(fulness) in every home and house.

4) In every heart poor and dark, send you a gentle beam.
A beam of Gods loves light, in blessed Christmas time.

The Noel Project &mdash 12/03/05 - 07:35:29 AM
This song is why I am proud to be part of the Noel Project, even though
all I did was mix it. The collaboration between Mystified and Curry (and
Jocke and Berndt) was amazing to watch. In fact, the 15 minute
"Swedish language lesson" from Curry is worthy of posting under
Spoken Word/Poerty. It also has some wonderful bonus guitar work
from Johannes. (Maybe he will post the link?)

Cat, your vocals on this, the improvised harmonies, are beautiful. And
your Swedish is flawless. I think? As I told you, this sounds like
Swedish/Country Western to me. Wonderful.

Curry, you and your band laid down a beautiful, restrained and
understated bed for this. Thanks for all your help.

I imagine some people may wonder about the artwork. The girl with
candles on her head? I found this explanation on the Internet, so you
know it's true: Santa Lucia's Day (The feast of Saint Lucia, Dec 13) is
the first day of the Christmas season in Sweden. This day is said to
bear the longest night according to the lunar calendar. Maybe that's
why in Sweden, with such long winters, the love of light is reflected in
this festival. At the crack of dawn, Princess Lucia in a white costume
and crowned with candles walks around serving coffee, bread, and
cookies to the people. A little girl with candles and boys wearing three-
cornered hats will walk with her and sing "Santa Lucia" and other songs
in chorus.

This is wonderful. I fell in love with the Swedish language when I took
it in college, and to this day I delight in the sound of it. It is music in
and of itself. This collaboration is a wonderful one. Both of you did a
great job on this lovely traditional song.

Very beautiful, folks... &mdash 12/03/05 - 03:09:29 PM
...very beautiful, indeed.

This would easily get airtime on folk radio around Boston, I think.

It has the feel of the season...

We at the Noel Project really appreciate the feedback we've been
getting on these Christmas pieces.
It's been an intense, time-consuming, thrilling, and very rewarding
effort.

Despite all the joking around from 'Mr Noel Project' from time to time,
we really are glad that it's brought some joy to those of you listening,
commenting, and downloading.

That was the whole point of doing what we've done.
So thanks, again.

Lovely sentiment. &mdash 12/05/05 - 01:41:54 PM
I love that Cori Ander was so moved:
"I feel that Mysti's harmonies and improvised melodies are just
wonderfully beautiful! The latter half of the tune starts my heart beating
by joy! This music could give life to a mountain! Just listen to her singing
the last verse..."
That sentiment is really quite touching.
Beautiful song and performance by all.
