Description:
Was that a dream?

I fell asleep
Face on the keyboard
Space bar on cheekbone
Repeating a moment
Doubling a rhythm
Opening a window
I began to rise
My dachshund Spanky beside me
Hovering above the Apple
Both of us
Or is this a dream?
Rising higher and higher
Into space
Into another galaxy
A mirror of our own
A reflection of this world
We land softly in Japan
A mirror of Japan
Spanky has no collar
I am in my underwear
Tadashi is at the keyboard
The mad funkmeister
Fingers flying
Smoke
Drums
Someone is with him
An alien
Glowing eyes, a smile
Spanky is frightened
I offer the dog ice cream
We watch Tadashi
And the alien closely.

Remind me to tell Mystified about this dream.

Keyboard/Tom Atwood*
Artwork/Tadashi Togawa

*near the end of this piece, a portion of the percussion is lifted from Tadashi’s Galaxy Band, Episode 1

------

I guess maybe some further explanation is needed. I composed this piece, which is largely improvisation, after receiving an email from Tadashi as he was about to post "Galaxy Band, Episode 1." Here is an excerpt from that email from Tadashi:

The tune will be completed soon.
I will submit it.
The name of a song "Galaxy band. Episode 1"
And,
I propose project to you.
"Galaxy band. Episode 2"Will you compose?

"Galaxy band. Episode 1" is the first movement.
"Galaxy band. Episode 2" is the second movement.
And, You will submit it.
Next,You propose the third movement to someone.

The movement is expanded by the circle of the friend of music.
...Episode 3, Episode 4, and Episode 5...
The circle of music will extend greatly.

How about this project?
Please let me hear your opinion.

To the friend of the United States music.
I await your answer.
Yours very sincerely.

Tadashi Togawa

Your distinctive style
Clear, even as you borrow
Words from Tadashi

I liked it a lot,
But now I can only write
A couple haikus

Don't worry about the haikus, David. I have a strange feeling you will get your
chance. If you want it. Thanks for listening & waxing poetic.

Final Stages &mdash 12/07/05 - 11:02:51 PM
This is what happens when an Atwood becomes a Project. You are
suffering from the late stages of Carolitis which can be brought on by
six weeks of complete immersion in holiday music.

The first symptom is "borrowing" the percussion of other artists. The
second is "borrowing," their habit of describing the "feel" or "vibe"
(advanced music terms, keep up, Atwood) of the instrumental. The
third is a sense that one must consult with or include Mystified in every
musical endeavor. She is but one woman, you cannot ride her like a
donkey or a funky chicken.

I wish there were another way, but the only cure is a six week patented
"disimmersion" process, whereby you create sophisticated
arrangements of all of my back catalog and write all new harmony
parts and then turn them over to me, gratis. It's the only way out, TAP.

Oh yeah, this is really good, by the way. I'm so jealous of your way with
JP4.

Mystified is my ticket out of Palookaville, Illinois. As for the "final stages," I
would welcome hospice at this point.

What gets me.... &mdash 12/07/05 - 11:07:47 PM
...is how QUICKLY you put this together, Tom.
D'oh!
Very Tadashi-esque! Yet undeniably "Atwood."
Niiiiice!

(You'll be a very tough act to follow)

Galaxy pond. &mdash 12/08/05 - 05:55:51 AM
Ancient pond.
Space alien jumps in.
Sound of Atwood.

Or, as Ryokan would have it:

What a pity.
The space alien has stolen my robe and my soul,
But he could not take this beautiful moon.
Wait. He has taken the moon, too.
Dang.

Are we supposed to comment on the music, too?

Ed

Is the space alien hiding itself anywhere? &mdash 12/08/05 - 06:16:54 AM
Tom
Terrific quick work.
This is a technology that only the space alien or the Samurai can do.

My pet dog "Chihuahua's cocoa" is surprised, too.
Did the space alien invade Tom?

However, it is safe because there is Mystified.
The teacher at my elementary school said.
"For the space alien, the cat is a natural enemy. "

Thanks Tadashi. This was an interesting challenge for me. Not just the music,
but also the song description.

This line from you (above) made me laugh out loud:

"The teacher at my elementary school said.
'For the space alien, the cat is a natural enemy.' "

You are a funny guy.

Thanks Doug. The piece is in 7/8. It got interesting adding Tadashi's drums,
which were recorded in Tadashi Time.

will be the name of my next Rock band.
the band after that will be called Tom's Not Wearing Pants.
regarding this tune -
...mmmm...dreamy!

the melody is structured yet very natural sounding. i like the chromatic
sounding thing at the end of melody.

That is Spanky Has No Collar™ to you, Ray. However, if your people call my
dog, I'm sure something can be worked out.

Thanks for giving this a listen. I appreciate the kind words.

Delightfully everywhere &mdash 12/08/05 - 09:41:26 AM
This is a little more "down-to-earth" than some of Tadashi's amazingly
complex pieces, and therefore more approachable given my limited
brain... I enjoyed this a great deal, and am also intrigued by Tadashi-
san's idea of collaboratively building this world-encompassing circle of
music. I look forward to future "power-ups" to this jam-packed series
of episodes.

Delightfully everywhere &mdash 12/08/05 - 10:17:41 AM
Thanks Eduard. Tadashi's idea is nothing new. It's more like a chain letter. He
told me if I didn't send a similar request to 5 other MacJammers, something
very unfortunate would happen. So, I decided not to take any chances.

It is an unusual time signature, biz. 7/8. Also syncopated. But not off. Thanks

"Tadashi time" lol! &mdash 12/08/05 - 11:46:14 PM
Tom, This is a great response to Tadahsi's original. I love your
comment re "Tadashi time" - Tadashi has to be the alien (or at least
very closely related)! The idea of a musical chain letter is fantastic - MJ
just keeps getting better and better.
I really enjoyed this,

Really nice post! And really a nice idea from Tadashi!

Will be very interesting to hear the rest! Hmm... I am very late
commenting this tune ... and maybe there already is a third movement
somewhere here ...

But the tone is unmistakenly yours, Tom. Wouldn't mind hearing the
drums a little better earlier on, but they eventually came forward ... as I
am writing this and then rewriting this. LOL. Very enjoyable.
