Description:
Felt bad for not writing anything for a while, so challenged myself to put something up here. Wrote this last night in one of the university practise rooms and came back in this morning to record it. I'm now uploading it sitting at the piano. Sometimes technology is a wonderful thing.

Song could be better, but then what couldn't?

Lyrics:
Take the photograph
It's too cold for this
I'm an icicle

So the air is lit
By a pair of smiles
And a hope of something beautiful

A strain on the marriage
A break in the chain
A secret history
Is happening again

Friends disguise what I still can not forget
But I'm not giving up on you just yet

Hanging in the air
Are forbidden words
There is someone else

As an argument
Burns down to ash
And a heart becomes homeless

A change in the weather
A slip on the hill
Lights on the river
But the river lies still

I search for smoke rising from your cigarette
'Cause I'm not giving up on you just yet

A photograph of the night we met

Nice &mdash 12/10/05 - 08:04:37 AM
The chorus is particularly beautiful.
Nice chord progression and a very heartfelt performance.
I could easily hear some accompaniment kicking in at the second half, but
it stands quite well as it is.
Lovely track.

(Comment no.500 - whee!)

Thanks Einarus - it would be nice to flesh it out a bit. This is the first track I
have made using my iBook so I am just finding my way with GarageBand. Next
step is to use a proper microphone!

Gorgeous lyrics. Really. I like to fill in the gaps myself. Almost
sounds like a piece of musical theatre. I liked the image of the icicle.
Good job, nice melodies--kk

Thank you. Strange thing - I thought I knew what it was about and then in the
middle of recording this take I thought of a whole other way to interpret it.

In the past I've needed to know exactly what I was writing about and have
reasons and explanations for each line. For this one I just took lines that I liked
and didn't worry too much about why I liked them.

So I'm glad you appreciated the lyrics. They could be better, in my opinion, but
that's not because the approach doesn't work - there are just some lines I don't
like enough!

What a beautiful song! &mdash 12/10/05 - 10:46:40 AM
There's something about the melody and sparseness of the piano that
creates a very nostalgic sentiment for me. This song has a classic
songwriter feel to it, like... oh NIel Diamond, John Lennon, etc. Very
economical yet also very potent.

Your voice is terrific here. "Reaching," honest, and vulnerable. Spot on
production and performance. Your choice of chords and rhythm to
underlie the lyrics is also very strong. The piano really does support
and amplify the emotional content. That's a skill I wish I could figure
out!

Delicious &mdash 12/10/05 - 06:57:38 PM
Your lyrics always leave me wanting to know more of the story ... and your voice in this one is exquisite - love the 'throw away' 2nd line.
And I mean 'throw away' in the sense of walking into a room and casually throwing away your hat into the corner so it lands perfectly on the hat stand as your secretary takes your umbrella from you and offers to hold your calls for half an hour.
I didn't get where I am today by not appreciating excellence.

Very nice! &mdash 12/11/05 - 07:02:36 AM
Could be an early Todd Rundgren ballad...lovely piano and voice. Very
smooth!
