Description:
This is another song written after September 11, the first I performed, actually. (Following the event, I couldn't write about anything else for months; I lived in the neighborhood and the Twin Towers used to fill my bedroom window.) I think I had to sing this song five times before I could make it through without simply stopping from be overcome with tears. Following the tragedy, "I Will Love" was my personal promise to the future. (Photo by Dan Loh.)

Lyrics:
I WILL LOVE

Eyes search and
hands fall and
life empties out.

Once strong and
once so tall, now
all is leveled; simply leveled out.

Then, after,
(must be an after)
rubble is cleared away
in boxes and in polished urns
and I stand, wordless, and pray,
with hands rising, to say
that I will love.
I will love.

And that no matter the danger,
no matter what the final cost
or the careful wagers,
and that no matter the risk of loss,
no matter what the hurt, or the fear,
I will love. Yes, I will love.

I will love, ever,
I will love, always.
From this grave moment on
with honor I will love.

What beliefs, what actions can I take now?
Are there things to do to fill in all the spaces?
Are there goals that make sense not to break now?
Is there something left to balance out the day?

I will love, ever,
I will love, always.
From this day, I am honoring this life with love,
I am showering this life with love.

Never forget.
I will never forget.
And I will love.
And I will love.

I will love, ever,
I will love, always.
From this day of days,
I will love, yes, I will love.

I will love, ever,
I will love, always.
From this life of lives,
I will love, yes, I will love, always.
I will love, yes, I will love.

uplifting chorus &mdash 05/03/04 - 02:45:48 PM
the melody you begin with is really interesting, like you'r eclimbing out of the space you find yourself in or something, but the chord progression subtly begins to become triumphant and then bursts into a great chorus. i love how it makes me feel. the space between the first and second parts of the song seem long, but then i thought maybe you were going for that (since you seem to know what you are doing in all your songs), so i thought maybe this was you getting drawn back into gound zero. but i love the chorus and ending. thank you for sharing this "personal promies."

Anthematic &mdash 05/03/04 - 03:27:45 PM
Excellent choice of instruments. Those chords... Thanks for the anthem. Thanks for the tears. It sounds as though it were the beginning overture to a Broadway play...

You sound like you stepped right out of Broadway! Your voice has good
power and has that on-stage presence. The instrumentation and dynamics
are quite good as well. Nice job!

Nice chord changes toward the end. I gotta say, I'm not
past the 11th.

Good tune &mdash 05/03/04 - 11:31:43 PM
I never get tired of all the interesting songs you come up with. This is no exception. Living on Staten Island, five minutes from the ferry, it was devestating to see the towers go down. This song has a lot of emotion behind it, jst great!

Good tune &mdash 12/28/04 - 02:40:27 PM
Thanks. You viewed it from the other side, had a better view. The photo I
used as song art was from across the river in New Jersey. Luckily the wind
was blowing away from you. But Staten Island became the real graveyard.
Ok, enough thinking about it... thanks for liking the song.

Very touching &mdash 05/04/04 - 01:13:07 PM
A nice progression, thoughful lyrics, very sober. Also must
have been difficult to write.

Very touching &mdash 12/28/04 - 02:50:38 PM
I made myself think of the words, a way of making my brain work again.
Once they began, once the first stanza starting forming, it all came quickly,
like relief that I could think again. The writing was easier than the singing.

Why I come here &mdash 05/04/04 - 08:03:07 PM
Tobin,
Hearing songs like yours are the reasons I joined MacJams
in the first place, and why I keep coming back to hear
more. Thanks for sharing. I too have written songs I
couldn't sing without crying the first dozen times I tried. I
really like being able to read the lyrics now. I gotta warn
you though...any more songs like those you're shared with
us and you'll ruin forever that image of New Yorkers as
rough, tough, city folk. : )

Morrie, I miss you on these MJ pages. I loved your soft heart. Yes, songs out
of the mainstream spoken from the heart, and experiments in musical
structure and sound is why I come to MacJams too. Thanks for you
comments and heartfelt caring.

The certainty of your voice... &mdash 01/25/05 - 10:46:02 AM
The hollowness of the hollow places and the glory of the moving places in this song are so big. Like standing between the towers, between the totems of souls lost, or maybe not lost but torn and separate. The certainty of your chorus, they way you sing it, is so moving. Everyone on the world should listen to this and change, be changed. Like a Gospel, an incarnation of spirit.
