Description
This is another song written after September 11, the first I performed, actually. (Following the event, I couldn't write about anything else for months; I lived in the neighborhood and the Twin Towers used to fill my bedroom window.) I think I had to sing this song five times before I could make it through without simply stopping from be overcome with tears. Following the tragedy, "I Will Love" was my personal promise to the future. (Photo by Dan Loh.)

Lyrics
I WILL LOVE
Eyes search and
hands fall and
life empties out.
Once strong and
once so tall, now
all is leveled; simply leveled out.
Then, after,
(must be an after)
rubble is cleared away
in boxes and in polished urns
and I stand, wordless, and pray,
with hands rising, to say
that I will love.
I will love.
And that no matter the danger,
no matter what the final cost
or the careful wagers,
and that no matter the risk of loss,
no matter what the hurt, or the fear,
I will love. Yes, I will love.
I will love, ever,
I will love, always.
From this grave moment on
with honor I will love.
What beliefs, what actions can I take now?
Are there things to do to fill in all the spaces?
Are there goals that make sense not to break now?
Is there something left to balance out the day?
I will love, ever,
I will love, always.
From this day, I am honoring this life with love,
I am showering this life with love.
Never forget.
I will never forget.
And I will love.
And I will love.
I will love, ever,
I will love, always.
From this day of days,
I will love, yes, I will love.
I will love, ever,
I will love, always.
From this life of lives,
I will love, yes, I will love, always.
I will love, yes, I will love.
Eyes search and
hands fall and
life empties out.
Once strong and
once so tall, now
all is leveled; simply leveled out.

the melody you begin with is really interesting, like you'r eclimbing out of the space you find yourself in or something, but the chord progression subtly begins to become triumphant and then bursts into a great chorus. i love how it makes me feel. the space between the first and second parts of the song seem long, but then i thought maybe you were going for that (since you seem to know what you are doing in all your songs), so i thought maybe this was you getting drawn back into gound zero. but i love the chorus and ending. thank you for sharing this "personal promies."
