King 4 A Day

Description
I wrote this one evening after working on a Kid Rock music video. I wrote it more as a goof on the current pop scene but it always seemed to keep coming back up among my band and our audiences. This is the original scratch groove and vocal. I didn't want to lose the feel so I stuck with it. Hope you dig.

Lyrics
Cruisin round town in a beat up Chevrolet
Too high, too hot, too tired
to know what to do today
Just another dumb punk
With a turntable and a couple of grooves
Not really caring how, or who he moves

Some fat cat with a shiny gold smile
Promised to take me on a trip
Across the miracle mile

The harder they come
The faster they fall away
You were King for a day

The harder they try
The quicker they fly right by
Ya better live well til ya die

They made me the man, undrestand?
The beautiful ambiguity
Cause the suits uptown
They saw my sale-ability

To make a long story short
I got all I dreamed about
The dough, the 'ho, the vintage Dyna-Flo
Was even ringside when Tyson got knocked out

The harder they come
The faster they fall away
You were King for a day

The harder they try
The quicker they ride right by
Ya better live well til ya die

Still crusin 'round town in a beat up Chevrolet
Still too high to know what to do today
Just another dumb punk with a turntable and a couple of grooves
But today I fade away and become yesterday's news

The harder they come
The faster they fall away
You were King for a day

The harder they row up the stream
Ya gotta live by whatch mean

king 4 more than a day
you just grooved me you know, I like everything in this track, ultimate bass and voices, chorus is just a perfect variation, even loved your lyrics (and i'm very bad at lyrics...). oh what a track!

king 4 more than a day
Thanks, Datafunk, for the kind comments. It was an interesting song to write
lyrically. I basically just began complaining about the whole music scene.
Part fantasy and part sour grapes, I suppose. I'll have to check out your stuff.

ridin the ropes
Very hip groove. I like your coordinated attack on the intro phrases like
"some fat cat" and "the harder they come". Professional sounding.

Thanks for noticing. It just seemed to hold it together a little. Anyway, see
you in the innercityhood.

Concept is King
Besides liking the groove, I like the overall "King for a day" story concept, as the "king" turns out to be "just another dumb punk with a turntable." I like the triplets that lace your verse (classic Caesar-style writing, like "I came, I saw, I conquered") with those lines -

Too hot, too high, too tired

and

The dough, the 'ho, the vintage Dyna-Flo,

which adds another layer of texture in a multi-layer production.

Concept is King
Coming from the creative force behind "I play the guitar electric", I consider
this very high praise indeed. Thanks for the input. It sort churches-up my
technique a bit, ha ha. Anyway, thanks again, and keep on with that voodoo
that you do so well.

Cool Groove
It reminds me of very old Steely Dan's first recordings. Sounds like a groove where everyone is having a good time getting funk'd-up. Has a good raw New York studio feel to it. I also liked the sliding downward chord progression with vocals following. Great job, I will be looking for more.

Hip, smooth, soulful and cool
Totally dug this. Hip, smooth, great groove, nice mix and performance,
soulful and cool. Could have driven thru some of your transitions with a
little more power (from the drum fills or solo instruments) to help the
pacing. It got kind of long without those little details. But I really liked it.
Nice track. I dig.

You busted me on the drum fills, or lack thereof, I meant to add some
dynamics but didn't get around to it before I submitted. Besides I have some
live recordings of this tune with my band and my drum programming skills
pale in comparison to my drummer's actual skills. Anyway, thanks for the
comments. I heard some of your stuff and I dig heavily! Thanks for the plug!

More than a ruff cut
Saw this in the Diamonds in the Ruff forum. I dig Jamiroqoi, Stevie, and you know Kid Rock???

More than a ruff cut
Thanks for the comparison. I dig Stevie and Jamiroquai also. I guess the
infuence is there. As far as Kid Rock goes, I have worked on many projects
for him. Although I am merely a lighting director so it's not like we're close
buddies. Though he does recognize me when our paths cross. Thanks for
the listen, I'll check your stuff out, too.

Steely good TUNE..
words and music are slick tight
give me more.

I do think the drums need to fade out a little sooner at the end.
