Description:
Ledebutant: Alley-oop posted this song back in June and it has always been one of my Macjams favorites. I'm very happy to have the chance to cover it. It's his birthday this week (the 13th) so I think it's an especially nice time to post a new version of bleed. Happy Birthday, Tom. I love everything about this song.

Alley-oop: I like this tune and asked Ledebutant to sing it. I replayed it in A and added strings instead of slide.

Lyrics:
Bleed

Beauty all around,
a symphony in every sound,
dancing in the sunshine laughing.
What does it matter anyway?
Just a dream remains.
Memory slowly fades.
Bleed passion from the pain.

Too many have so little.
So few have too much.
A tattered sign says, "Feed Me,"
Spare change for lunch.
What does it matter anyway?
Nothing to eat today.
Bleed passion from the pain.

A symphony for the deaf,
a sunset for the blind,
dancing shoes for the wheelchair bound.
What does it matter anyway?

Wage war for peace.
End poverty with prison.
Pave over the landscape.
Cold hard cash bought out wisdom.
What does it matter anyway?
Less and less every day.
A world spinning insane.
Bleed passion from the pain.

Give the deaf one symphony,
one sunset for the blind.
Momma please get out of your wheelchair,
dance with me one more time.
Make everything all right.
What does it matter anyway?
I'm bleeding passion from the pain.

Beauty all around,
a symphony in every sound.
Dancing in the sunshine, laughing...

Hardware:
Hmm. We both use a Behringer Eurorack UB802 mixer and I sing with an MXL-990. Tom records guitar with an MAudio

Wonderful &mdash 12/12/05 - 03:14:06 PM
There are so many things to like about this song. First of all, it is
beautifully written. I remember having some discussion with alley and
Tobin about the political vs personal nature of some of the lyrics in the
original posting of this (but of course all those comments are GONE
now, erased in a moment of...oh well, let's not go into that again).
Also, this song reminds me of a "golden era" of MacJams. Not sure why
I look at it that way, but I do. The period when this song was posted
contained many excellent songs, in my opinion. So, I'm glad it is back
up.

Now, as for the ledebutant vocal: perfect. Absolutely perfect. It is lo-fi,
untouched, up close and just perfect. Very nice job, Lisa. I suppose if I
was producing this, I would have asked alley-oop to chime in toward
the end, but you guys did not ask me to produce this. Why not? (Just
kidding)

I won't put my score here. Don't want to anger the 10-bomb police,
who have been patrolling the streets lately in force. But I'm guessing
you have an idea?

OK, who gave Tom the keys to the Noel Project snowplow after he'd had too
much eggnog? I don't know if he's fit to drive that complicated piece of
machinery any more... Tom? Tom, you in there?

Thanks Mr. Unaskedproducer1956,
I agree that Ledebutant sings the tune perfect. She has a tone in her voice
that is mesmerizing. Her voice has that certain something (I know there's that
good french language phrase that means a certain someting, but I can't spell
it)
Regardless, Lebebutant has it.
Thanks Tom Atwood

I agree with you so much about this song being beautifully written. It wasn't
until I sang it that I realized how well Tom uses repetition in the lyrics. The
melody, everything about Tom's song I just love.

As far as my vocal goes, we'll just pretend that it's untouched...no assistance
from technology of any kind, in fact I could just march on down to the closest
ampitheater and sing it just like this. Maybe.

I'm confused about the production suggestion. Do you mean that alley-oop
should have brought his voice in at the end or a different guitar bit? It would
have been lots of fun to sing part of it with him, a nice tribute to the original.

Fanks, Tom and lay off that eggnog or snowplows. You can't have both. I
learned that the hard way.

touching... &mdash 12/12/05 - 03:32:09 PM
I'd not heard the original, but this is gorgeous... great guitar work, and
such soft singing... perfectly matched. Despite a minor quibble I'd have
with the meter of a few of the lyrics not quite fitting into the space
allotted, this is really a poignantly touching sad song. Very well done
you two!

Thank so much Drak for yet another thoughtful comment. I always appreciate
getting your take. I'm interested in hearing which lines you felt didn't fit, so
that when I re-record this one day, I can put the screws on Mr. Oop to rewrite
the lyrics.

I actually enjoyed singing "cold hard cash bought out wisdom," Mr. Oop. It's
fun to sing.

Tom, I'm not the biggest fan of your 'electric' playing, but your acoustic
playing ranks right up there with the best at MacJams. What impresses
me in this song is how you selflessly let the song come first and really
let your playing serve the piece. This coupled with perhaps Ledeb's
best yet vocal performance (full of quirky charm) bring the song alive
and imbue it with a real sense of soul. Hey! I even gave it a 9. And I'm a
hard nosed bitch.

Be cool guys,

Well, now I have my album title. Okay, maybe not.

I love how you put 'electric' in quotes as though perhaps the playing isn't
electric at all, but solar powered. I agree with you about what you said about
Tom's accoustic guitar playing (and I quite like his solar-powered playing,
too). He's wonderful and very generous, musically, as you
said.

You gave us a 9? Now I can die. :-) Thanks, Pie.

Mr. P. Thanks for saying what you did about putting the song first. Not letting

for the mood of the song.

Walking on Sunshine &mdash 12/13/05 - 03:14:35 PM
Hiya hacked, I understand why you feel the lyrics were a little upbeat for the
mood. The first time I heard this song, back in June, I thought of it as a happy
tune, but a closer look at the lyrics, "wage war for peace," "what does it
matter anyway," "a tattered sign says feed me" and so on made me realize
that the song had a deeper meaning than "dancing in the sunshine laughing."

I had exactly the same reaction as you at first, though, so I know where you're
coming from. Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment.

Walking on Sunshine &mdash 12/14/05 - 03:11:08 AM
This whole song is about me being a happy kid with my mom and my family.
She doing fun stuff like dancing with me in the back yard. Everything being
perfect. Then I grew up and saw the world. My mom can't dance anymore. So
actually I never get to see the beauty or hear the symphony or dance in the
sunshine the way I once did. But seeing the sorrow fuels my passion.
That's what the song means to me.

Thanks for getting this song back up here! I was missing it...and this
with ledeb's vocal is a special treat. I think I sort of prefer the slide
guitar to the strings, but since I didn't download the previous version,
I'm only able to go by my memory of it. There are some nice parts to
the strings, and it actually makes this a little more distinctive, with the
sort of stream-of-conscious string parts dancing around...great guitar
playing too, of course.
One thing's for sure, I've downloaded this now and it's going on the
iPod.

I'm glad to get this song back up, too. It's one of my favorites and I was sad
to see it go, indeed. I think Tom took off the slide and added strings to make
the song more feminine, plus, in my original comments to the song (now
dead) I bitched about the frequency of the slide and said it hurt my teeth. I
think I gave him a complex.

To be on your iPod thrills me!

Actually, this is probably a good place to mention that Tom and I have a
bunch of song we plan to do and will probably have enough for an album
eventually. We're going to call it Bi-Coastal, since I'm in Seattle and he's in
New York, so I've added Bi-Coastal to the keywords of all of our collabs, so
that anyone who wants to listen to more from us can just click on Bi-Coastal
and get a list of our songs.

So far we just have this and Blackberries, but there's more coming.

Gorgeous &mdash 12/13/05 - 03:25:46 PM
The guitars beautiful, sounds a little zeppelin to me. ledebutant vocals are gorgeous. The lyrics are happy go lucky and fun to read. I just think personally that the words didn't fit very well with the melody. For example:

What does it matter anyway?
Just a dream remains.
Memory slowly fades.
Bleed passion from the pain.

Not only do the words not flow well with the repetition of the melody, I think the repetition could have been used only on the last two phrases. The two first phrases in this part could have bridged the first part to the last two phrases as a different melody and then shorten the last phrase to "Bleed passions from pain"...take out the "the". But what do I know...It was still a pleasure to listen to.

Thanks for bringing back some of the macjams of old. I didn't participate back then and this a real treat. It's like missing out on Woodstock.

Regards,
John

Great point on the lyric cadence. I sang it a few times with your suggestion
to lose the ‘the’ It works better, Thanks.

When I do it
again I include that change. For me this is a sad sad song.

Beauty all around,
a symphony in every sound.
Dancing in the sunshine, laughing...

That’s just a memory in the song. Something that’s faded from my youth.
Now a an adult, I see the world with it’s pain. And the dancing with my mom
as a kid is gone. So the
Beauty all around,
a symphony in every sound.
Dancing in the sunshine, laughing...
is always in the past tense. THanks for your comments! I appreciate them.

Thanks so much for the nice words about my vocal and I should probably
share some of the blame for the words not fitting, since it's partially due to
my phrasing. I'm glad you liked it regardless and hey, Macjams is a living,
