Dreamy, woven voices calling me
Surely I’m asleep…?
The dream occurs to me all at once, in a second
Planted by the web of voices
The illusion of time passing is in the retelling, the unravelling
I remember it, the alien
Appearing before me in my dining room
Three of it’s mouths explaining in perfectly clear gibberish
It needed me for a gig
"Hey man,
I just play the drums!"
My cat Chuck was nearby
Making the alien nervous
"wE nEED A dRUMMER"
"I’m an earthling with but two arms and two legs
How will I play your alien beats?"
There was no spaceship
A vortex appeared, and KA-fa-*BOOM*!
We were gone
Somewhere on Earth
a dog barked
I went deaf during the rehearsals
Figuratively
"This isn’t music! It’s some kind of awful/beautiful noise
Hey! How come I can’t just say ‘awful/beautiful’?"
"yOU aRE aTTEMPTING tO mAKE tOO sUBTLE a dISTINCTION
bE aSSURED tHIS iS pRECISE, hARMONIOUS oRCHESTRATION"
I was not assured
"I’m just good at earth music!" I protested
"a gROOVE iS a gROOVE nO mATTER wHAT gALAXY yOU aRE fROM"
A spheroid moonlet was hollowed
And the stage floated in the center
A hundred million ghastly creatures watched and listened
And danced and shouted
Hooted, warbled and shrieked
As I drummed on an outrageous kit
With a band of outrageous monsters
It was the gig of the galaxy, only not the Milky Way
Some other galaxy
The teeming millions loved it
But the alien recruiter wasn’t dancing
"tHE sEATTLE gRUNGE iNFLUENCE iS tOO eXTREME," it gibberished
"nEXT tIME I’M sCOUTING iN iCELAND iNSTEAD"
Was it all just a dream?

.,,Have I... Okay, no more flashbacks, flashpresents or flashfutures for
you. It's possible that you may have used up you lifes alottment here...
And a mighty fine job of doin it. I just happen to be in just the right
'space' for this - Man-O-Man, that was quite the rush and one helleva
trip...
I don't know why and or how this tune could have jumped out from
wherever... And show up here to be just what I needed... I mean, I'm
trying to make some kind of appearance here away from a life's design
that has temporarly shorted me on available time to play at MS's and
this tune, it might have given me a weeks worth of FIX...
That was otta this world... Another ticket please...
