Description:
Darren and I have talked for awhile about doing a collab and it's only now come to fruition. Starting with a guitar and synth riff I had in my mind, Darren not only played the riff, but cleaned it up, and came up with three others that are in the track, as well as playing the synth riff on guitar which just sounded awesome!
For the guitar tracks, Darren miced the front of his Mesa Boogie Nomad 45 with the Apex 430 Condenser Mic and the back with a Shure m57, resulting in a nice, thick guitar sound.
I was going for a kind of funky industrial metal with punch, but you could groove to it. The collab was a pleasure and don't be surprised if you hear more from us. :P
Lyrics:
A nice little ploy,
To get yourself something
Notorious toy,
Good for just about nothing.
I've seen you before,
And I know you'll keep coming.
You quickly got here
And you'll quickly be gone.
You're not so obscure,
But you see yourself running.
You're a thing that's so sure,
when you see yourself gunning
You're well on your way,
to be the forgotten
Full of yourself,
And nothing else.
Missing the point,
You sell your own sadness.
Then you flip your coin,
And ask for forgiveness.
There's no better way,
for a self-proclaimed actress,
to vindicate action,
through sympathy.
You had a choice,
And you chose to have malice.
You had a voice,
And you chose to be callous.
You made your noise,
From the top of your palace.
And now you' mean nothing 0 0*.
Idols will come and idols will grow,
But you're not the God you think I owe,
How does it feel to not be the best?
No matter how close you try to get.
Stretching your words, distorting the truth,
Victim of no one else but you.
Of all the things, that you try to get.
The world is the one thing you expect.
This space, it was bore out just for you.
But you found it was too much work to do.
This place full of ignorance and bliss,
You call it home and you're not too hard to miss.
This word that you wouldn't dare to speak,
Reflecting all of your fucked up history
This past that you can't seem to erase,
You spew, like the present, from your face.
This blame that you hand to everyone,
Is the easiest way you could run.
This thought reoccurring in your mind,
Is a thought no one else can seem to find.
This world isn't big enough for two,
Thank God for eliminating you.
This time it is something more than real
When you find that you're no big deal.
Idols will come and idols will grow,
But you're not the God you think I owe,
How does it feel to not be the best?
No matter how close you try to get.
Stretching your words, perverting the truth,
Victim of no one else but you.
Of all the things, that you try to get.
The world is the one thing you expect.

This is not the end of TENSE at all... chikoppi and I just haven't had the time to
cross paths in awhile. I do have a TENSE track in the works still and consider this
a very TENSE style track, adding DChapman to the list of TENSE collaborators.
Perhaps all three of us will end up collabing on a track together soon! [ Reply to This ]

Wow, these collabs are fun... &mdash 12/18/05 - 05:48:55 PM
The wonders of the internet... collaborating with a guy from LA that i've
never met, while i'm freezing my nuggest off up here in Canada!
Here's my half of the story:
Joe approached me with the intent of a collab and supplied me with
about a minute of synth riffs with with percussion. Not quite knowing
where this was gonna go, i spent a few hours creating riffs to
accompany. Once I had what I liked, i miked up my boogie, condenser
in the front, 57 in the back and supplied joseph with 2 audio files for
each part, giving him a unique tonal control of the guitar.
I'm very pleased to see how these guitar parts have helped a small
piece of music evolve into a complex industrial song.... and this is a
genre that I would have otherwise never worked in.
Amazing job Joseph. I can't wait for the next collab! [ Reply to This ]
Groovy funk industrio-metal? Hell yeah! &mdash 12/18/05 - 06:33:26 PM
Balls-out! I was curious how you were going to fit vocals into this one. I
love the approach you took, with the wide and deep introduction. The
cadence of the vocals slips right in to the the rhythm. Great lyrics! You
gonna tip us off on who the subject is? I can think of a few media divas
to whom these lyrics might apply...
DC, I dig the guitar work. I think you're a closet industiral-naut! The
licks are very NIN, with that great little chromatic step worked in. I've
tried to mic my amp a few times, but never got a nice round sound like
this.
Really meaty mix. Lots of rumble and potential for things to get
muddy, but everything is distinct and sharp. Solid, steadily-building
song structure and groovy transitions and breaks. My neighbors are
going to become familiar with this one! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks chikoppi, I also found it very interesting the way Darren double miced it.
It gave me great control over the tonal area the guitars would live in.
I am interested in the possibilities the three of us could achieve with your
industrial noize textures, his guitar licks and my vox.... hmmmmmm [ Reply to This ]

about time you two...
Awesome collaboration.
Packo, the arrangement and production here is stunning.
Your vocals are the best I have heard from you so far. Great harmonies
on the chorus. Good lyric writing too.
Darren, what can I say, I'm a fan of yours and your playing here is
fantastic.
I really hope you all work together as Tense for a long time to come!
One of the best tracks around and now top of my faves list.
Top marks guys,

... you've got that KMFDM sound nailed. Even the fact that TENSE may have revolving collaborators makes you more like KMFDM (philosophically).
Ok, all that said, this is a great f'in tune!!! [ Reply to This ]
I always say... &mdash 12/18/05 - 09:06:03 PM
You know what's funny... considering KMFDM's recent albums, I wonder if we
sound more KMFDM than KMFDM does :P
Of course, the main reason being KMFDM's signature sound came from Gunter
Schultz and now that he's left the band, this leaves KMFDM without that
flavor.Instead, that flavor has gone to Slick Idiot along with En Esch. [ Reply to This ]

nice &mdash 12/19/05 - 09:04:37 PM
pretty well polished up for these here parts...
spiffy production.
I think it takes too long to get into the "meat" of the song though. I like
the idea of building up into the heaviness, but it seems like it gets
bogged down before it really kicks in. Overall very nice but I think you
could tighten it up by cutting it down by 20 seconds or so.

love the light and shade with the guitar layers and the vocals. If the vocals
were a bit louder and you stuck in a knock down get out git solo in the
middle this would be just ridiculously good.
As it is it's just pro as the pie man said.

can't get enough &mdash 12/22/05 - 09:13:23 PM
as i've said before with your other songs....i really love this shit! i really
like hearing, what I think are some influences - KMFDM, Ministry,
etc.....although what i really like about "Expect" is now I'm starting to hear
some Nitzer Ebb....which really gives the groove with punch, which you
said you were going for. Really takes me back to why I really started
listening to this genre of music...thanks alot! This is excellent!!!!!! [ Reply to This ]
wonderful. &mdash 12/23/05 - 04:50:51 PM
industrial is a great genre, and you have reaffirmed that.
i really dig the music, and the whole vibe and beat.
the lyrics are quite good too.
i think it's amazing what you can do over the internet, you LA person
collaborating with a guy all the way in canada.
who did the vocals?
was it you or dchapman?
either way, i love this song. [ Reply to This ]
wonderful. &mdash 12/23/05 - 06:09:06 PM
Hey crucial_d, thanks for the great comments! To answer your question, I sang
the vocals, mixed and composed the song and DChapman did all the guitar. In
the future, we're going to try and figure out a way for DChapman to mix the
guitar as well... I would've had much more mixing help from him if the file
wasn't too much for his PowerBook to deal with. I've gotten spoiled with my Dual
G5, heheh! [ Reply to This ]

WOW &mdash 01/06/06 - 07:36:51 AM
OK - I commented on this song after I had listened to it once. Liked it enough to download it....
I burned it onto CD the other day with the intention of listening to it in the car on the way to work.
Since then... it's basically the only thing I've listened to. Over and Over. This song gets my vote for the BEST SONG EVER ON MACJAMS. By a huge, huge margin too.
Incredible production guys. Just incredible. Love the guitar sound, great mixing, space for all the instruments. And the lyrics rule too.
If I have one beef, it's that I would like to hear the vocals just a bit higher. Not much, just a tad.
AWESOME work guys!

Im imagining a grungy ware house dance hall south of market, there is a
lame wanna be dj mixing this tune and the patrons are sweating out
their last hits of x . This tune cranked to 11, the windows are rattling,
nubile dancers trancing......... forgive me I was having a flashback.
Listened to this a couple of weeks ago sounds better with each
listen.Excellent lyrics and vocal performance and music, what more could
one ask for.Im really too old to enjoy this but I do any how, I won't tell any
one. Later [ Reply to This ]

Clean, really hot track. tasty compostition. great singing , great lyrics. great breaks. great playing I thought the vocals could have been a liitle more out front. And the crunchy guitar rhythm parts could have been more out front.

Forget Pro &mdash 01/30/06 - 06:10:46 PM
What can I say. It truely is professional sounding. But what means
professional? Reaching the level of stuff released by labels? The truth is,
you show excellence on all levels: performance, song writing, production.
If this wouldn't work for a decent demo for a label, I don't know what
would. Dude, if my ass was in SF right now and not stuck here, I'd start a
mutual project with you. [ Reply to This ]
Very impressed! &mdash 07/19/06 - 09:36:27 AM
wow, that rocks. i dig everything about this track, but i'd like to hear it with harder percussion and maybe a slightly meatier bassline. the nitzer ebb-ish vox & liyics are spot on. [ Reply to This ]
