Description:
Bill Furner (The Tiler) graciously sent me his guitar solo and asked if I would like to put lyrics to the song. I was not able to sing it the way he had originally intended and asked him if I could do a tribute song to my little sister (who recently passed away from Cancer). I explained that I would like to do the song as a Christmas present to my mother. He kindly allowed me the freedom to put a "different" expression to the song. I mixed the vocals myself. And some are now becoming aware, my mixing skills leave something to be desired, but I hope the song sounds OK nevertheless. I apologize to the Italian Community for my mis-pronunciation of some of your beautiful words (and the occasional flub of the lyrics).
Lyrics:
You have gone away
And left me all alone
My tears flow gently
Your memory in a song
You were my little sister
Now a soul that soars on high
You were taken away
Much before what’s fair
And now you are so far away
To far away to touch
You must sing to me
When I smell the autumn breeze
As I watch the coloured leaves
Fall to the ground
They will renew again in spring
But I know that you will not
You will live on forever
Deep inside my thoughts
I love you – Judy – I miss you
Tu sei andata via
E mi hai lasciata sola
Le mie lacrime volano via
La tua memoria in una canzone
Tu eri la mia piccola sorella
Ora sei un anima che vola alto
Ti anno portata via
Tanto prima che sia giusto
Adesso sei cosi lontana
Troppo lontano per toccarti
Tu devi cantare per me

I like it... &mdash 12/24/05 - 01:44:41 PM
You did well with this, I know how hard it is to translate into a language
you don't know, especially when trying to do prose too... Tiler's guitar
sounds great too, though it is funny... with my head stuck in the 70s, I
keep hearing Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" in that one recurring riff. What a
beautiful elegy... my thoughts go out to you and your family for your loss,
but she is nicely remembered here.

Fabulous vocals! And I've always been a fan of thetiler's guitar music so
this is a double-treat for me. [ Reply to This ]
autumn breeze &mdash 12/25/05 - 03:19:57 AM
Hi Alannah, this is such a fine piece of art. Your beautiful voice together with the tiler's great guitar playing creates a peaceful mood. And its all well put together and great performed from both of you. The italian parts is lovely - tough I don't understand a word:)
I'm sure she will sing to you in the autumn breeze. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks to all &mdash 12/25/05 - 02:13:17 PM
Thank you all for such nice comments. Christmas can be a hard time of year for a lot of people, especially when you are a family member short for the first time. I thank God every day that there are still beautiful, kind and caring people (like the ones I have met on MacJams) in the world today to fill the space of those we have lost. Merry Christmas everyone. [ Reply to This ]
Peaceful &mdash 12/26/05 - 12:34:32 PM
Poignant, full of grief for an untimely death yet a celebration of life ...
Very hearfelt vocals. I lost a sister myself when she was just 17. This
song moves me in a way that no other songs here does. Great job and
thanks, Alannah. [ Reply to This ]

To say that one of my songs "moves you" is the greatest compliment .. thank you so much Leon. It's when we lose someone that we realize just how precious and fragile life is. [ Reply to This ]

bonjorno, i'm sorry for your loss. i can understand your pain and your song speaks to all those who have lost. it's very beautiful and i agree that the italian makes it very sacred sounding as pointed out by 'thetiller'. merry christmas and be well [ Reply to This ]

A nice tribute. &mdash 12/27/05 - 12:26:55 PM
This is very touching. I'm sure your mother will treasure this gift. I
especially like your singing on the Italian parts. I would almost like it
better without the spoken translation so I can simply listen to your
lilting vocals, but it is beautiful nonetheless. Nice job. Oh, and Tiler's
playing is gorgeous as always. [ Reply to This ]

I haven't had much of a chance to listen to a lot of music here, being in
the throes of an intense creative period, but this sounds incredible. I
actually think your mixing on this is something to be quite proud
of...to say nothing of the extremely touching subject matter. I don't
know what else to say except that I love this very much. The balance is
perfect and the music is purifying! [ Reply to This ]

Pain as Beauty &mdash 12/29/05 - 10:32:07 AM
If only all the sorrow in the world could be put into one song and never
played again, what a wonderful world it would be. I liked the way you
did the alternating singing and speaking interspersed with Bill's guitar.
It gave this song a unique artistry while at the same time honoring the
memory of your sister. [ Reply to This ]
such beauty &mdash 12/29/05 - 09:31:05 PM
Your voice is really something. You have a middle eastern phrasing
that is just amazing! I love this piece, Tiler, five star as usual. Well
done! [ Reply to This ]
such beauty &mdash 12/30/05 - 05:25:43 PM
Middle Eastern Phrasing .... well that must be it then ... hahahaha there has been MUCH debate about my "accent" ... and oddly enough I don't normally have one - it just seems to have appeared when I sing sometimes .... at last count I believe "Welsh" might have been the concensus. Thanks for the comments. [ Reply to This ]

It can be so hard to compose over exotic guitar parts, and you have left a
touching, and inspired piece of your heart for us to enjoy. I am a 4 year
Cancer survivor, and a piece of music this gorgeous only serves to remind
us of the fragility of our lives, and how our memories live on, and inspire
us to create these tributes. You are a gifted singer, and I am SO very
happy you posted this. She is smiling.

so sad and slow and beautiful, and your Italian was beautiful too. I loved
the English narration after the Italian singing..just, beautiful. [ Reply to This ]

beautiful voice &mdash 04/29/07 - 12:36:27 PM
I got here via your "In Memoriam" thread, and I think this song is very moving indeed. I think your voice is just amazing, and in fact, I think it's so powerful that I'm not sure you even need guitar on this; it might be interesting to do it a cappella. I also don't think you need the spoken translation, but that's just a personal preference on my part. I'm really impressed and moved, and very sorry for your loss. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks for your very kind words ... &mdash 04/30/07 - 10:23:25 PM
... acapella huh ... not sure I could pull that one off ... I tend to sing off key even while listening to the music ... couldn't imagine if the music were only in my head .. hahaha I went back and forth on the translation part .... and it was on the advice of one of my friends who asked that the English part be put in because they said they didn't understand the Italian part ... (ya can't please em all) ... I'm not even sure why I sang it in Italian in the first place ... it was just a notion I had at the time. Sort of like a secret message to someone on the other side.

Well .... &mdash 04/30/07 - 10:31:02 PM
.. I hope I "made you cry" in that "good way" .. you know the way when we "remember people and the good times we had before we lost them" melancholy kind of cry .... this too can be healing in itself. (All those nasty chemicals in our bodies that can only be released through tears). It truly is only a matter of time until we all are faced with a loss of some sort - it's part of living I suppose. And a good old fashioned cry helps heal that pain I think. Thanks for stopping by my little memorial tune and commenting. I appreciate it.

Wow Tim ... those words of high praise are certainly high praise indeed!!!! My head must have been in the clouds when you left this comment for me to not know it was here until today ... of course Spirit Child holds a very special place in my heart ... honestly .. not a day goes by since I first heard it that I don't listen to it ... (maybe even a few times in a row ...) I don't know why THAT one sticks with me the way it does ... but it just does. And I am soooo glad that you sent me the original vocal files with all those juicy extra bits which you had deleted but which I put BACK IN !!!! We really must work together on a new tune one day ....
