Description:
The concept of this song started when I discovered a blurred picture among the digital camera downloads of the day. I thought I'd have to write a song to go with it--and promptly put it on the 'back burner.'

A few months later, after finishing 3 months of Christmas songs, I was ready to do something completely different. So I dug out my TuneUp Loops and started to randomly drop tracks in GarageBand.
34 tracks of TUMI, vocals and software instruments later, I had a song.

But the original concept of 'blurred technology' expanded in meaning from the original concept of a digital photo to include the human facet.

Definitely moving out of my comfort zone to create this piece, I was fortunate to get feedback from others along the way, and so: SlimGirlFat, PGreenstone, Tom Atwood and I.Spike--thank you so much for listening and giving me valuable feedback and suggestions!

Lyrics:
Blur

Some say technology is the answer to everything.
Sometimes, it's just a blur.

Can the human heart keep up with technology?
Sometimes...
It's just a blur....

Thanks for that, CJ! That 'integrating' just about drove me bonkers.
This is so NOT my genre--and i have to say that the only real dance/club music
I've listened to much of at all are infrequent postings here and there on MJs....so
yeah...thanks very much for your comments! ;)

The human heart; the technology of emptiness &mdash 12/28/05 - 06:43:46 PM
I will answer the question that this song raises, but fails to answer: No.
In fact the question could be expanded to, Can the human race keep
up with technology? And the answer is still, No. The human heart, and
human beings, have certain requirements that technology not only fails
to meet, it speeds us past them so quickly that we fail to even notice
what we have missed, attracted instead like monkeys to shiny objects.
We only notice later, a realization accompanied by that familiar empty
feeling.

All that aside, this had a good beat & I could dance to it. 10-10-10-10.

I knew I could count on you for a comment that addressed that question, Tom!
Sounds like there might be another song in all of that? Maybe?

One thing I do know...working with that club beat took me back to "Bells, bells,
bells, bells, bells!" (Hmm. Maybe I should have thrown one of those phrases in
for variation...)

Thanks for your comments, Tom, and the preview/reviews on this piece!

Right on Mysty! That was GOOD! I lyked that... What to know bout
you...

I dig it when you get all jagged round the edges like that. Course, I like
your warm and more cultured self too - And I am sure that there's
more...

Thank you, Cyd!
This song was mainly about having fun after doing some intense Christmas
music--though I discovered that you end up learning a lot, even just having fun
putting a song together.

I appreciate so much your comments, your kindness, and your support!

Hi Mysti:
Great song in the tradition of Kraftwerk, will definitely get you movin

Technnology sure keeps my love of Garage Band alive...but you're right,

I have heard of Kraftwerk--but I have to admit I've not listened to them. Maybe I
should do some homework!

I do know that 'technology' was lacking on the Mac Mini--I'll be upgrading to 1
Gig of RAM soon!

Thanks again for taking time out to listen!

I'm not usually visiting this genre, so I'm certainly no expert, but I liked
this. It asks a question that is important. It's an interesting sound for you.
Keep on experimenting!

Thanks, kristyjo, for getting out of your own comfort zone and listening and
commenting on a genre you don't listen much to (that makes two of us!).

One great thing about MacJams...it's a great environment to experiment, have
fun, and get feedback....and so I thank you again for yours here! :)

Well...I'm curious, anyway!

As a matter of fact, I did get HAL to come read for the part. He's a bit behind on
the technology, however. (2001 being five years ago and all....) Think he needs
an upgrade?

Thanks for the listen and comments, z! :)

Ahahah, well, big fun about this, poor HAL...he seemed such a clever piece of
computer!
Just, for this song, I think that logic would be in trouble (and it's much smartier
than GB on dealing on tracks...) I can't figure out how annoying can be to work
with so much layers in GB...
Anyhow, loops work well IMHO. I find interesting the change of mood and the
use of spoken text, even if you have too cute a voice and too kind an intonation
:D. Just joking, but seriously I think it fits much better in the last part of the
song.
Experiments are vital.

Thank you for the comments, Mungo :)
I almost spent more time trying to balance everything out and eliminate clipping
than I did putting the song together. As it is, I think the bass suffered a bit for
it? But maybe one day I can get someone to do a remix of it?
I also discovered that lots of vocal effects really bogs down the CPU.

Ahhh, technology!
Thanks again for your comments :)

disturbingly complementary &mdash 12/29/05 - 02:21:45 PM
There is something disturbingly complementary about the soothing
female voice (which epitomizes warmth, compassion, human empathy),
and the robotic/synthetic computerized musical wash behind it that
epitomizes cold unimaginative logical exactness. Juxtaposed Yin and
Yang, both needed to create the whole. I love it, in an uncomfortable
way. Reminds me a bit of the female android in the old Fritz Lang
movie "Metropolis", for some reason. Digital Sirens guiding our ships...
to where? Through the Myst I guess. Very well done!

Drakonis

Wow, drak...
I think your comments here are better than the song ;)
Really--very cool observations, and you did pick up on something I was trying to
do, which was contrast the warmth and assurety of a 'real' voice with the chatter
of the altered/robotic voices.
Digital sirens, indeed. I like that!
Thanks, again :)

At first, &mdash 12/29/05 - 04:45:04 PM
I thought to myself: "Blur...hmmm... what an odd title of a christmas
song...".
Turns out I was right about that.

'Blur' is, however, a very appropriate title for this - a lot of movement and
motion (Motion blur, perhaps?).

All in all, a very nice track - good vocal performance, as always, and a
very nice choice of loops.

Your diversity in music styles is a delight to listen to.

Lordy, this is like Yaz back in 1982 - super-sweet! I love what the sentiment is here - that humanity versus technology. Very nice and sweeping, and your voice as usual, very nice. This could easily be music for a commercial, either iPod or Nissan - really well done, Mysti!

A good job, especially for being out of your comfort zone! &mdash 12/30/05 - 06:38:56 PM
I can't quite put my finger on what this reminds me of, but it's very
reminiscent of a song I've heard before. Sounds somewhat like Orbital.
You did a bang-up job with the vocal mixing and sampling, and the
underlying synths and other instruments support it very well. The
strings towards the end also add a nice touch, kind of bridging the gap
between classical and contemporary.

Keep up the efforts in this genre. I agree that you've got potential here!

The Soul of the Machine &mdash 01/02/06 - 06:30:02 PM
GIves me a real William Gibson, cyberpunk kind of feeling. The sound of
the lovely, etheral vocals weaving in and out from human to digital is
perfect. And the human vocals against the, at times, cold, digital
backdrop really lends to the overall theme of the song.

Wonderful, Mysti. Sent chills up and down my bio-mechanical spinal
implants. ;)

Enjoyable &mdash 01/03/06 - 05:56:49 PM
Though this is not the kind of music I usually listen to, much less enjoy, I did like this. The spoken words were well integrated into the rest of the piece and I liked the melody. I thought you had a good choice of sounds and they all worked well together. In addition I thought the drum part was good, helping to move the piece. Really my only complaint is the harmonic dryness, the lack of harmony combined with the repetitiveness of it is disappointing in an otherwise splendid piece.
