Description

Originally written as a simple piano study for left hand extended arpeggios, this piece was expanded to include a string section and upper winds. It is relaxing to play on piano, and I hope this version is equally relaxing to listen to. Also, if anyone can think of a more evocative name than 'Arpeggio Etude' please suggest it. Thanks for listening.

Thank you cj. Music has many functions, and one that I've depended upon in the
past couple of years is its ability to calm me and slow me down. Although I
haven't studied it, music therapy is supposed to be excellent for helping people
through its ability to lower blood preasure and heart rate and even regulate
hormonal levels. It's nice that something that 'works' for me also 'works' for you.

Hi Kristy. Thank you so much for this lovely piece.

Indeed, music has been therapeutic for thousands of years before it
became a qualified part of the medical profession. Interestingly, Jubal
(in the 4th chapter of Genesis) was the first musician and was the
inventor of the harp and the flute.

As for a name for your piece, you can't call it an etude anymore
because the piece involves more than one instrument. Arpeggio still
fits very nicely though. However, the soothing impression of floating in
a dream evoked by your composition, coupled with the soft use of
arpeggio, made me think of it as "Floating Up The Stairs of a Dream".

Oh, come on! You can call it an etude if you want. :-)

It just means "study," and this is a study on combining different textures and
melodies to produce a beautifully relaxing piece of music. This could be used
for a dream sequence in a movie.

I read your bio -- you studied music education for practical reasons, but
enjoy composing -- sounds a lot like someone else I know on this site.

Full of wonder
Thanks for listening, John. Yeah, the music teacher biz has a few more of us,
too, I'm sure. I've been able to do more listening this week than in the previous
month I've been here. It's back to the routine next week, which is fine - because
otherwise I'd get bored with days off : )
I guess this piece is one of my favorites among pieces I've written in the past
because it does a practical job (left hand technique builder) along with the
calming aspect mentioned before.
