Description:
Here's a little something from my Musical Curiosity Shop... one of my old demos, recorded on a 4-track TEAC 3340 reel-to-reel.

This particular take was already mixed (with a number of bounced tracks), so not much could be done except to tweak the EQ a bit. I'm hoping to salvage the original tracks and remix them in Logic Express.

The drum track was produced by an inexpensive electronic keyboard. The rest is me, singing and playing various guitar parts.

Dance, Dance, Dance
Music & Lyrics © 2005 By J.A. Stewart
— ALL RIGHTS RESERVED —

Well tell me what do y’a do when you just don’t like to dance?
And you’re sittin’ in a club lookin’ high and low for romance.
You see a beautiful girl who gives your heart a little twirl
But you know that there’s no chance --- Unless you Dance, Dance, Dance
Y’a got to get up and take a chance --- You gotta Dance, Dance, Dance
To meet those beautiful girls, C’mon ---

Well you may look real hot in all those fancy clothes you got
And you know, you might even be cool.
You may be a jock, a real cock-of-the-walk, the Number One Big Man On Campus at school
But if you can’t shake them bones, you’d best leave girls alone
‘Cause they’ll drop you like a fool --- Unless you Dance, Dance, Dance
Y’a got get up and take a chance --- You gotta Dance, Dance, Dance
To get those beautiful girls --- C’mon now and Dance........

There’s no need to be shy, c’mon and give it a try, just find a girl that you’d love to meet.
Then walk up to her, look her right in the eye and say: “C’mon, Baby, jump outta that seat.
Won’t you give it a whirl? If you do I know you’ll be my girl.”
C’mon and Dance, Dance, Dance.
Y’a got get up and take a chance ---
You gotta Dance, Dance, Dance ---
Start a new romance ---
You gotta Dance, Dance, Dance ---
Get up and take a chance
You gotta Dance, Dance, Dance--- Dance, Dance, Dance--- Dance, Dance, Dance---
And meet those beautiful girls ---
And meet those beautiful girls ---
And meet those beautiful girls ---

Ha! This was fun! Now how old is this shop of yours... Can ya still sing
about the other gender like that... Nice 'tar work! Nice vocals! Nice
beat! Nice all around movement! Dick Clark would've been proud of
ya.. I see barrettes and other colorful hair thingys fling'n about - And
are those bobby socks and plaid skirts I that I see...

You should have earned lots of beer money with this one...

I'm glad you enjoyed it, Cyd. I t was meant to be fun, straight-ahead dance
music. How old is the shop? I still have a few dinosaurs for sale here (not
including me). ;-)

Hey! maybe I should email it to Dick Clark for tomorrow night's New Year's
Rockin' Eve, eh? :)

Cool vibe, great groove. Great job on your vocals. Everything works.

This is the kind of song when played loud at a party kicks it into gear in a
big way. Everyone gets into it.

I really think this could have been a hit back in the day, espesh if some
sustaining keyboard part (organ, maybe?) could help contrast the sections
of the song with well-timed entrances and exits. This thing just kicks,
and is plain fun. I'm gonna listen again right now.

You got more of these?

Definitely takes me back... &mdash 12/30/05 - 02:10:35 AM
Thanks, Patrick. It was definitely meant to be a party song. As a matter of
fact, I think a couple of my old friends and I played it at a party once and
several people got naked (no kidding!). :D

I think I may have a take of this with input from one of The Spinners'
keyboard players somewhere, but some of these old tapes are not in very
good shape.

If you have an idea for a keyboard part, please send it my way. I'd be honored
to have a real keyboard player on the track. I intend to remix and/or re-
record this tune (and another dozen or so from the same collection) next
year. Maybe what's old is new again. ;)

WOW! &mdash 12/30/05 - 10:35:32 AM
I never thought you had this in you! Man, you rock! The 80's rock style
is reminiscent of the great bands of 80's that ruled the charts in that
decade. A little bit of the Cars there, a dash of John Cougar..and quite
bit more! The message is pure hedonism, just get wild and crazy and
celebrate youth. Rock and roll in pure form.

The vocals are classic pop-rock and the late harmonies are delicious.
The instruments are crisp. Awesome altogether. This song screams
pro, man.

[ Reply to This ]
WOW! &mdash 12/30/05 - 12:59:26 PM
Thanks, Leon. I had plenty of rock in me... probably still do. ;)

The last band I played in was a very good one --- a high energy Pop/Rock
outfit. So I had a lot of different influences to draw from.

I imagined the message as a call to arms to the wallflowers, who were missing
all the fun and the chance to meet... all those beautiful girls.

Impressing how you've been able to get it this tight and swingy by
adding track after track. You've got a really nice swing in the song!
Especially on the voices!

Your voices are doing a real good job alltogether! Joyous listening!

Swings nice &mdash 12/30/05 - 01:17:51 PM
Thanks, Cori. I'm glad you liked it. It was tougher than I care to remember.

Working on those four-tracks was nothing like working with software.

The worst part was monitoring your previously-recorded tracks, while recording
new ones. What you heard through the monitors was a fairly "muddy" version of
the tracks --- which made recording harmony vocals considerably more difficult
than it is with software facilities.

Ah, my. I swear this track could be heard over the credits following one

picture! Super energy! The guitar licks are just perfect.

KEWLNITUDE &mdash 01/02/06 - 08:53:07 AM
This is cool. I like everything about this track except the fidelity. I
gotta disagree with the opinions expressed by others about the
production - this is one time when I wish production and performance
were separate categories because the performance is outstanding and
the production is, well, 80's 4 track. The mix is fine, but the high end
is fuzzed out. The guitar sound kicks ass, though. You still have that
Les Paul Gold Top? :)

Regardless of 4 track recording this is a great track.

[ Reply to This ]
KEWLNITUDE &mdash 01/02/06 - 10:32:43 AM
Thanks, Rich.

As I said in my introductory notes, I'm hoping to locate and salvage all the
original tracks to this demo and about a dozen others. If and when that
happens, I'll transfer them into LE7 and remix and EQ them and try to improve
the sound.

And Yup, still have my '69 Road Warrior Gold-Top Les Paul Deluxe --- I even
located the original Humbuckers I had saved. A Collector friend of mine told me
they're worth quite a bit of money, so I'll be putting them up for sale sometime
this year. ;)

But hey, joe, you've just got to re-record this! The high end is killing
me! But other than that major gripe, This is super-duper! Me likes the
vocals a lot! Dumb fun!
An Acoustic 150 amp is sure to have plenty of high-end! I used to have
one of those but it had some bad capcitors and has been retired!

[ Reply to This ]
Great song! &mdash 01/02/06 - 06:28:35 PM
Yep, re-recording it is on my to-do list for 2006. It was meant to be a good
bar song to get people up on the dance floor, nothing more.

The 150 had a cabinet with six-10"s in it, which I used mostly for my
keyboards at large clubs and in concert; I had an Acoustic 475(?) with 4-12"s
for my guitars. But for guitar work requiring a stinging high end, I'd plug my
axe into the 150. I sold both of them shortly after this recording session.

Sometimes I miss them. :(

I still use the SM-58 on occasion for certain vocal parts. That mic and I go back
