Description:
Tadpoles (On My Mind) by Tom Atwood
It's my turn to ask Tom 'not to kill me' as I post a song that he passed on to me 'unofficially' one day.
I figure if it was ok for Tom to post a certain unauthorized "Chicken Lesson," that it's ok for me to return the favor in this ;)
And so, on your One-Year MJ Anniversary, Tom, I'm digging up "The Lost Record" and posting this song---which I think is truly wonderful!
I don't remember all the particulars to this song (I really had no intention of posting it at first!)--only that it's a great song that deserves to be shared and heard!
I do know that it was a 45 vinyl (remember those???) and he was 19? ( 21?) at the time of this live recording.
I'm sure Tom will fill you in, below.
A bit of nostalgia, and a great tune!

Thanks scream. Well, I was surprised when I saw that Ms.tified had posted
this old song that I sent to her in a foolish moment. But, I guess after I posted
an unauthorized version of her "Chicken Lesson," I had this coming.
So, some brief info about the song. It was written when I was 18, and was
recorded as a single with a band known as "Arm & Hammer" in 1975 when I
was 19. This recording that Cat has illegally posted was recorded 30 years
ago during an outdoor concert on the town square in Jacksonville, Illinois. It
was recorded on a cassette tape recorder.
Members of the band:
Rick Rhoades/jaw harp
Don Willi/guitar
Jon Montgomery/string bass/vocal
Ray Vasey/piano
Tom Atwood/guitar/lead vocal

Tom was young once. Never would have figured. :)
This is a really cool song. Lots 'o' fun. Thanks for sharing it, Mysti. [ Reply to This ]

I'm a country boy! Yee Haw! I'm pretty sure I can hear Tom's anorak
rustling in the background. Fun stuff. [ Reply to This ]
wow &mdash 12/31/05 - 07:07:18 AM
So this is where he gets all his energy and talent... he's got tadpoles in his
mind. Sounds just like Tom... he hasn't changed a bit! Delightfully silly
and well-written ditty, as usual. All this amazing creativity, makes me
want to throw in the towel and quit composing right now... sheesh, no
more songs from me... ok ok, I am not telling the truth just now, I
amphibian.

Pure fun!
I trust no tadpoles were harmed in the recording of this song .... [ Reply to This ]
Oh. Boy. &mdash 12/31/05 - 08:45:53 AM
Oh. Man.
The even weirder thing is, I used to do this. Hello, my name is Ed and I'm
a tadpole hunter... From waaaaay back....
Crayfish, too. Snakes...
Didn't have an anorak, though. Must be a regional thing.

"The older you get, things get complicated"... &mdash 12/31/05 - 10:46:30 AM
Ah... what a wonder. Everything's gone downhill since then, eh? All
these fancy modern orchestral piece's he's been posting lately make
you wonder where the Jaws/Jew's harp player in him has got to.
Very charming, and brilliant for one of such tender years. Love the
vocal delivery. [ Reply to This ]
Um yah &mdash 12/31/05 - 10:53:17 AM
we used to go get tadpoles in jars too. Not sure why, I guess the scientific curiousity of kids. This is a great tune! Lots of fun energy, and that boinging (is that a jew's harp?) really brings out the frogs. Another song that would suffer from a fully cleaned up digital treatment; it sounds just right the way it is. [ Reply to This ]
'Boing, boing'... &mdash 12/31/05 - 11:13:46 AM
is, without a doubt, the most pleasent sound to hear in a folk song.
Although there is barely room for more pleasantness in this one :) [ Reply to This ]
Alright! &mdash 12/31/05 - 11:53:25 AM
Hee Haw meets Mayberry with Andy and the gang rockin out! This song
rates right up there with Bullfrog Blues which I intend to record some
time in the future. Maybe a new genre, Pond Music? [ Reply to This ]
A bit faster, maybe? &mdash 12/31/05 - 12:49:25 PM
ah cool! &mdash 01/02/06 - 05:28:32 AM
This reminded me a lot of the music that I often hear movies from the sxities or seventies! This was really pleasany listening! [ Reply to This ]
What a treat! &mdash 01/07/06 - 12:47:07 AM
That is such a cool song. Gave me a big smile. It bops along like a
tadpole who's just got his little legs.
This might seem like a strange comment, but it reminds me of A
Christmas Story. My wife and I have a two-year-old tradition now,
where we watch that DVD each Christmas. She's American and grew
up with it; I have embraced the tradition because the movie makes me
laugh. It's about a kid who is obsessed with getting a BB gun for
Christmas. And it's such serious business to him. Like Tom and his
tadpoles. This song just captures that wonderful time in a kid's life.
Good on you, Mystie, for posting it.
Tom, any chance of a GB remake? I'll play it for my kids one day. [ Reply to This ]
What a treat! &mdash 01/09/06 - 09:51:34 PM
Hmmm...a remake of Tadpoles? Now that is something I had honestly not
thought of until now. It has always appealed to kids. I will think about it, but
it would take some courage! Thanks for the comments, Nolan, and everyone.
