Neal Stephenson's book "The Diamond Age" is my favorite read of all time, give or take a book or two. The Fists make a dramatic comeback in this science fiction novel, swarming into the future Shanghai. Vac (Steve Vaccariello), who also loves that book, plays bass, and rhythm and lead guitars.

Great Funkin' Jeff Beck &mdash 01/02/06 - 05:55:43 PM
Great groove goin on here - also love the various guitar tones and solos.
Production is very clear - every instrument is distinct - the bass is very
tight - and the production doesn't distract from the performances, it
focuses on them.
PS. Cool picture. [ Reply to This ]

Man, Vac can &mdash 01/02/06 - 07:11:35 PM
tear itt up! Love your tunes man. Production is always so tight. To me, the guitars and bass are mixed SO well. They really have room, stand clear of each other, and allow all the other standard PV effects and sounds to create depthin the music without interrupting the solo instruments in the forefront. Just really impressive production, and the performances themselves are sick too. I mean, legit sick. Damn. [ Reply to This ]
Man, Vac can &mdash 01/02/06 - 08:11:59 PM
Thanks Josh, you really nailed what I was aiming for; I didn't want to
obscure Steve's great playing while I was building on it. I have a lot of
respect for your musical ears, so it's nice that you like my tunes. And I'm
glad you like Vac's killer playing as much as I do. [ Reply to This ]
Nice &mdash 01/02/06 - 07:42:51 PM
Another nice one David. So are we all going a little up tempo for the new
year. :-). Nice energy, now we just need to get all this energy we have
into one song. Tell Steve he is top shelf in my book, but you are one shelf
higher. Look forward to doing something new with you. John [ Reply to This ]

I think I know what you're talking about, because I struggled a bit with
getting the right drums for the beginning, before the lead comes in. I
appreciate your observation there. Thanks for listening, hacked; I'm glad

Excellent &mdash 01/03/06 - 10:55:10 AM
This piece is just a funhouse of fretwork, and I'm digging it beyond all belief. My one nit - it's too short! One of those odd cases where I could've listened to this for another four or five minutes - so maybe it's good that you "leave 'em wanting more." Excellent work - great, solid production, awesome performances - killer energy! Way to start the new year! [ Reply to This ]

completely amazing. &mdash 01/03/06 - 07:33:46 PM
the bass is amazing, the guitar is amazing, the way it comes sort of screeching in. it has some awsome rhythem to it's lead soloing style. this is a great instrumental, but with such awsome playing it almost makes me want to hear some vox, to make it really powerful. i donno, i had the thought of the way eric clapton did the cross roads cover with like chords or something simple during singing then in breaks going into lead. the bass part was killer. made me think of the who's bassist a little. sad thing he passed away. i can't give any real criticism, because the musicians in this blew me away! sounds like that are why i love music. knowing there's something so great gives me something to strive for. Very nice &mdash 01/04/06 - 02:25:47 PM
Great great groove, very well-played bass & guitars, fun fx, holds
together very nicely. Everything is mixed well, but I do have one
headphone gripe, and that is that the bass is permanently off to the right,
which feels unbalanced to me, at least in headphones. I'd have preferred
the bass to be really close to center (or centered but stereo-spread L-R a
little), and the guitars to dance a little to the left and right. My right ear
got bass-thumped :-) But other than that minor suggestion,
performance, writing, and production was wonderful on this! Great tune!

Thanks for pointing that out Eduard. My crappy headphones at home don't
have much bass so I didn't pick up on that. But yes, now that I'm listening
on better 'phones at work it does sound unbalanced. I'll definitely fix that
for the album. Glad you liked this, thanks for listening and commenting!

Using Wiretap, eh? That's a great little simple program... what did
you use it for here? Just curious. I hear the gleetchlab, too. I
gotta figure that program out someday... [ Reply to This ]
great tune &mdash 01/06/06 - 04:56:05 PM
Thanks Eric! I use WireTap a lot in making my own loops. In this case, I
used WireTap with Kompakt (the Demo version, actually); I try a whole
bunch of stuff in Kompakt, recording it all. Then I bring the sound file into
SoundEdit and chop out segments as loops (and mess with them, of
course). Most of the recording is discarded. WireTap is just a convenient
way for me to record whatever sound experiments I'm doing sometimes.
Another thing I use it for is with Soundtrack. Soundtrack has nice fx control
panels, and you can get cool noises by looping something and changing
the fx parameters. Sometimes it's easier to get the effect you want by
recording THAT, than by finding the parameters and changes that work
best, and then keyframing them (if that's even possible).
So, that's the long answer. The short answer is that I used WireTap to
create some of the synthy stuff in the background. As for GleetchLab, it
seems confusing at first, but once you understand a couple of basics it
gets easier. Not that I fully understand the whole thing. Grokking the matrix
is important. --- Fists of Righteous Harmony[ Reply to This ]

Holy Smokes! &mdash 01/09/06 - 10:30:27 PM
The guitars and bass are real, the rest are loops and homemade sounds.
The drums are all Drums on Demand loops, with a few exceptions. A lot of
the loops come from the East West Zero-g Pro Pack, and several are
homemade. I suppose I could detail this stuff up top.
Hey thanks for stopping by for a listen, Scorp, I'm glad you like this!

Hey thanks glennkav, I'm glad you like this! My friend Steve played the guitar and bass tracks in this song, and he didn't use a computer. Instead, he played directly into his Korg D1200mkII digital recording studio, and burned his tracks to CD from there. Then he gave me the CDs with his bass and guitar parts and I imported them into my Mac, and mixed them using Soundtrack. Thanks for listening!

You know, this does sound like the soundtrack to an anime flick. All about young heroes with superpowers who fight demonic androids and experience every shade of teen angst in an adventure set in a post-apocalyptic landscape.
I really like the mix of the instruments. The delay and reverb could easily have become overwhelming, but instead everything blends nicely and has a lofty, soaring character (nice playing and riffs too!). A lot like listening to someone enthusiastically telling a story with many twists and turns. This never for a moment feels repetitive - though I was hoping for some break out in the bass line.
High energy drums that sound great... but then - what else should we expect? [ Reply to This ]
