Description:
Late one night while the rest of Wayfarer was sleeping, Mokus lights up a track...

An idea I've been wanting to finish for a while...the first couple lines and the basic melody have been swirling in my head...I'm not sure if I'm quite happy with the music...but it says what I was feeling so I'll let it lie.

Lyrics:
I thought I saw you smile
from across the room
a light unto all these lies

I want to watch you a while
and maybe listen for this
peace that has left my life.

You are the sweetest thing
that I have ever seen
You've opened up my eyes
through the darkenss and the pouring rain
I'm witnessing it's you that guides my life.

I thought I heard you sigh
from behind the door
dividing truth from all we hide

Vainglory dons her genius disguise
and clever, pointing up she
claims it's his design.

But you are the sweetest thing
that I have ever seen
You've opened up my eyes
and though the dark of her duplicity
I'm witnessing it's in the night stars shine

Just do one thing for me now.
get up off your knees now
to see the sun set
over a sea of good intentions
it's alright now...it's alright now!

You are the sweetest thing
that I have ever seen
You've opened up my eyes
through the darkenss and the pouring rain
I'm witnessing it's you that guides my life.

Wow - this is great.

Really good structure and chorus - everything is there. Love the (edgy, in both senses) guitar.
There's a few things to tweak in the mix maybe (the bass seems a bit weak in the verse), but the song, and the band sound , is there.

Look forward to seeing you live ...

We also look forward to seeing us live, but are we not all dying but one long death?
...oh wait, that’s not what you meant...sorry.
Yes, it is one of our countless New Years resolutions to start playing some shows this year...
(crossing fingers). We shall see.

Thanks for the comments, cheers…

This is a great track. I love rock songs that center around the acoustic guitar.
I think it should be used more. Reminds me of the acoustic guitar on the fast
section of "Band On The Run" by Paul McCartney and Wings. (Okay, so I'm 46
years old, if anyone is trying to do the math.)

Your vocals are very solid. Keep it up -- I see a future for you in this biz.

Guitar playing is well done.

Yeah! &mdash 01/03/06 - 02:41:25 PM
Only you can know what you intended, so I can't judge how far you went
from that. All I can say is that this a fantastic track, one of the best I've
heard at MJ. I love the arrangement, heavy with acoustic tones. It has a
strong U2 flavor to it, particularly in your excellent vocals. Really, this is a
great tune, all around, that I think would do well commercially.

The only critical point I have is the ending. It doesn't seem like a "fade
out" kind of song. I think it needs a real ending. But if you stick with the
fade-out I'd at least make it a longer one.

Yeah! &mdash 01/04/06 - 08:08:26 AM
Thanks again Peter for the thoughtful comments...yeah, once we start goofing with this in a live sense we will have to work out a different ending…In my head I have numerous adjacent ideas that I would like to transition out of this into. We will see what happens. many thanks.

As usual... it's a much more polished piece than you use to post here... nice to see you've taken your time to mix... :)

I like it a lot!!!

bono voce &mdash 01/03/06 - 04:54:47 PM
or good voice. Really, great actually. The mix is tight, the music is strong, but the voice is what really stands out. Very professional. It almost sounds TOO much like Bono, at first I thought someone posted a new U2 song by accident. Great performance here.

Oh boy, now I'm blushing...I personally think I sound more like my father...but hey I do love U2...and perhaps the maxim is true that ‘you are what you eat.’
Oh man, I need to go on a diet...
Thanks for listening...

Terrific song and a great voice to deliver it &mdash 01/04/06 - 02:39:23 PM
Perhaps there are too many Bonoisms in here (but who am I to talk, I can't
even imitate Adam Clayton singing) but I like this a lot. The only thing
bugging me is the drum mix, particular the snare, it's too far back in the
mix to propel the song properly.

Terrific song and a great voice to deliver it &mdash 01/05/06 - 01:05:28 PM
Adam Clayton singing...that would be awesome. He could be the next Sting. Hey, he's got the stage presence :)
Seriously, I take this as a great compliment, but I do not hear the Bonoisms...in other songs I have certainly been guilty, but not this one...no?
I will definitely pay closer attention to the drum mix on future tracks.
Thanks very much for your perspective.

like the bouncy strumming and &mdash 01/04/06 - 07:12:56 PM
the u2 like singin and bono feel.

Nice guitar arpeggios in high sound on electric guitar.
Like when it opens up in chorus when everythings seems to happen.

Nice rock singin and playing.

Bass-ic Instinct &mdash 01/05/06 - 08:51:05 AM
Other than the obvious fact that this sounds heavily-influenced by U2, I
agree with Peter Greenstone that this is a very good track.

But I think if the bass part had a more prominent/dominant place in the
mix, it would help de-emphasize that similarity and punch up this track
quite a bit.

Overall, I think you did a terrific job here.

Bass-ic Instinct &mdash 01/05/06 - 01:08:59 PM
I'm currently crossing my legs real slow-like while pondering your suggestions.
The bass level is always a challenge...different references reveal different results.
I tend to use my car for the final say...that said, my car can tend to be bass heavy which may coax me in to dropping those levels in the final mix.
Along with the drums...I will focus on these things a little more for our next track.
Thanks so much for your comments!

Wow, I LOVE that jangly guitar. That's fantastic.

The vocal is first rate. Really really good.

This is really excellent. All the elements are beautifully arranged to
complement each other. The result is professional sounding and just
gorgeous.

Awesome voice, dude. Couldn't help but wonder if Bono was testing
out some new material. I love the rawness of the acoustic guitars.
Great sound.

The backing gets a bit messy in the chorus, I reckon. But you've
obviously captured the sound you were going for and that's more
important than anything. Really liked it, instantly.

Great sound! &mdash 01/08/06 - 12:48:07 PM
Thanks Nolan, I agree with the messiness - especially in the chorus...This is the second time I have tried recording a song element by element...and I feel, well out of my element. Singing with headphones on feels really weird...Since posting this song I can't listen to it at all...the singing bothers me so much. I hear all the dissonance and disunity...all the things I would not have done if it was live.
Next time I will try some different techniques...a great learning experience.
Thanks for commenting!

This is a very great track! Top notch singing! Vocal hooks all over! Just great! Maybe it's my head phones, but I felt the bass was light sounding. Maybe center it, bring up the bottom end. Excellent

raw &mdash 01/09/06 - 08:44:11 PM
i can see the u2 ness. but i think this has something else. it's a bit more raw. and i prefer that over u2. i would as said like to hear more bass, and personally i'd like to hear the guitar more to give it more drive. but then i love being able to hear the guitar and prefer it not to be so much in the background especially when it seems to be really good.

Well if by u2 fan you mean I buy some of their music and listen to it occasionally, then no...
but if you mean I’m front row throwing my underwear on stage at every stop of their tour that comes within a 500 mile radius of my house, then yes guilty as charged.

Actually, I only listen to MacJams music now...down with consumerism!

This really feels "real," and not loop-based. Your voice is just right for
this kind of track.

I hear echoes of Robert Plant.

Good work, Ryan.

Sexy voice and lyrics, music is also very good but a bit too loud with vocals. Needs some kinda remix there, unless it's just my headphones. :)
