Lyrics

i can/see right
through your shirt...

empty sleeves
that twist and turn

in surprise
to find you gone

and left this line
i'm hung up on

all these things
take shape around
what cannot be found...
and what is left is evidence:
ephemeral at best...

you'll come to understand
the faded/the secondhand...

how what you lose becomes
the irreplacable one...

Ephemeral
When I worked in TV news (before you were born), there were certain
words that were not used in the news stories I wrote. They were not
"TV words." The word "ephemeral" would be placed in that category.
However, I guess it is a jonx word. And as such, it might as well be
sung twice, for emphasis. Still not sure what it means, though, being
the Joe Sixpack that I am. I do know what a clothesline is, having had
one in the backyard, along with a garbage can where we burned our
trash, and where sometimes hairspray cans exploded.

Another excellent piece. Will vote later so as not to jinx the jonx.

Classic Jonx music
Short, sweet and to the point. Nice poetic lyrics and a finely crafted song.

I don't know if the drums got louder as the song went on or if the guitars
mix was dropped back- but something sounds a little awkward to me
toward the end of the song, almost like the drums start to dominate just
before the song ends... maybe I'm nuts. You may want to fade out the
ending to avoid the cut off ending.

The song is terrific- it's always a pleasure hearing your fine music!

don't take this...
the wrong way, but to me, your lyrics, mix and structure don't really matter because your voice is so good. Fortunately, all of those things are pretty darn good as well. I'd love to know what type of set-up you're using to record vocals. I like the sound a lot.

PS- I agree with adam about the mix. It starts with a better sound than it ends with. But that's on the nit-pick side. Overall, i like it very much.

I'm blown away...
...by your ability to write such seemingly simple lyrics with such a
complex subtext. It's not what you say, but what you don't say... I
adore your talent. Rare 10s from me, given for you.

Always something to learn from you.
Always with the great poetry...great song!
Technically, yes, I wish there was better balance between some of the elements in the mix (I%u2019m one to talk)...but nothing detracts from this being brilliant.

Whenever I...
...get an email about your tracks, I click the link too quickly to be
measured.

You are, without a doubt, one of the best songwriters and performers on
MJ in my books. Why I'm not hearing this stuff on the radio is beyond
me...

Fantastic work, yet again.

outstanding
The production on this is fantastic, and the instruments really support you lovely vox.

Very melancholic without being glum, but i was sorry it ended so soon - the structure works, but you could easily expand this.

obviously echoroom has not heard some of your more miniature pieces. This
is an epic!

another winner
for me ..... I've been listening to your previous work and find it all superb. beautifully crafted songs - often short and sweet - with compelling lyrics and sung with one of the best voices I've heard so far on MJ. Looking forward to more!

Powerful, but...
Your comment about my string interlude was exceptionally kind and
generous, so I feel like a bit of a schmuck saying anything negative
about this, but hopefully you'll either take it as constructive criticism,
or just ignore it if you don't agree.

The first half is sublime. Specifically, the short, simple intro is perfect,
your opening lines are immediate attention grabbers, your voice is
fantastic, the real deal, and the repeated melody line with guitar
counterpoint is haunting, fascinating, engaging, etc. I'm ready for a
change by the time "All these things..." comes, and sure enough, you
give us a change, and that too works well.

By the middle of the song, I'm thinking this is a good as ANYTHING I
hear commercially, better than maybe 90% of it, in fact. The kind of
stuff that stays with you long afterwards.

But, beginning with "and what is left ...," something changes for me,
and it's hard to pinpoint, but I'll try. It's still good, I'm just not reacting
to it with the superlatives that I used for the previous material. I think
part of it has to do with the fact that the lyrics until this point have
been mysterious, open, leaving the listener to wonder about their
meaning, and then, I don't know, I feel like the text becomes less
subtle; you start telling us what it all means in an unambiguous way.
But I guess what I was really digging was the ambiguity of what led up
to this point. Like Tom, the word "Ephemeral" stuck out for me, but in
a very non-subtle, non-ephemeral way. Someone once told me (and I
have since read this many times) that one of the fundamental
guidelines for writers is, "show them, don't tell them," and I feel like
the first half of the song is you showing us stuff, powerful imagery, but
maybe in the last six lines you begin to tell us stuff in a more direct
way. I personally like the idea of ending the "all these things..." section
with "what cannot be found..." It's more mysterious, open, forcing us
to think about what it all means.

I take it from Tom's response to echoroom that writing short songs is
your thing, which is intriguing, but I have to say that, given the quality
of the opening verses, I don't understand why you don't bring the
melody back. I kept waiting for its return but it never happened.

I don't have a problem with the drums becoming more prominent
towards the end; I found it an interesting feature. You have
extraordinary craft and subtlety.

Okay, I'll shut up now. Please don't take offense at any of this!

Jonx surprise
This is one of the nicest songs I have in a while. The voice blends with the instruments, the song is well written and the lyrics make you think. I do agree with one of the reviewers in that some of the instruments could be mixed slightly better. Enjoyed particularily the first minute!

To me this is the kind of song you would hear as soundtrack for one of the better TV episodes when things wrap up at the end of it and leave you with a bittersweet feeling, wanting to hear again that song again...

Great voice, great song
Love the start Jonx - really like the way you've used light and shade
through the song. Sounds a lot like an Australian band called Eskimo
Joe - with harmonies reminiscent of Neil Finn. Great voice, great song.
A bit short for my liking, but then I tend to drag mine out a bit. Now
that its finished, I think the best part was the way you've used your
excellent instrumentation so sparingly and to such great effect - I think
I just learnt something - thanks! Lovely bit of understatement!
