Description:
Beau Soir is a romantic art song by Debussy, and has been a favorite of mine for a long time. The lyrics come from a French poem by Paul-Charles-Joseph Bourget. I apologize in advance to any French-speakers... My pronunciation is certainly not perfect!! I tried to go back and fix some pronunciation flaws but I had to stick with take 2 because my dog decided to sing along after that... I recorded the piano/vocal and sent it to Alimar knowing that he could do something very unique with it. He added some percussion and produced it in a way that transforms the song into an almost avante-garde/classical/pop piece. Alimar also created the artwork. Thanks Alimar!

Lyrics:

Translation: Beautiful Evening
When in the setting sun crimson rivers are gleaming
And a wave flows and trembles o'er the fields of grain,
From the earth comes a joyous message gladly streaming,
Rising up to the heart in pain.
And it sings to enjoy the youth that we are given,
In the night, 'neath the beauty of the waning moon.
For we must all depart, just as the wave is driven:
Waves, to the sea,
We, to the tomb.

for posting this emily. Your voice is next level good. It is always a pleasure to hear you sing. As for production, I love the swells, but they seem slightly on the "duck! Incoming techno!!" side, which to me, takes away some from the beauty of your performance. (Although, who the heck am I to comment on Alimar's production!) It's just that I find the production fights your feel in spots (not everywhere, just in spots) and to me its a shame to hear anything that covers up your wonderful voce. Just my humble opinion. I do like it though! I swear!

The &mdash 01/07/06 - 02:19:58 PM
drums do not go well with this song at all almost to the point of
ruining it please consider removing them unless your going for the
cheesy disco feel. The vocal performance on the other hand is very nice
good job on that.

I got a sneak peek at this one and was blown away. Very entertaining
work...it's now in my iPod, causing trouble, because it has so much
more class than everything else in there!

You have such a beautiful voice &mdash 01/09/06 - 11:48:22 AM
and I want more...I would have liked it to have lasted longer. The lyrics are nice and I'm glad you have included the translation. As far as the punctuation it sounded ok to me but then again I can't speak French. You sing so well and have such control. I enjoyed Alimars backups they were nice too. Do you speak Portuguese? My next project is a choro.

merci pour partager

This is very classy indeed &mdash 01/09/06 - 02:53:26 PM
The vocals are lovely...you obviously have a real talent for operatic
singing. I like the juxtaposition of the electronic beats with the classical
track..it doesn't feel overworked or 'bolted on' to me, but it gives a nicely
surreal, dreamy feel to the track.

Ha...I get it &mdash 01/11/06 - 10:50:23 AM
And I love it. Yeah, of course, the voice is beautiful. Comes across real well in the media. Reminds me a bit of how listening to Ute Lemper affects me (not to suggest you sound like her)--startlingly beautiful.

And the drums--Alimar I love it. This piece could have been your straight-up serious classical recording, but the drums beg you to give the piece more attention, asking why, why, WHY? And I think I know why. And I'll just keep my own answer to myself. Ha.

Loved it. Thanks you two.

Please take out the drums! Debussy is rolling in his grave!
It sounds great except for those awful drums that don't even have
the same rhythm as the piece. Its like they were just pasted in
from a completely different techno song.

Lovely singing...however, I have to agree with other folks...the drums gotta go! If you going to have any accompaniment make it more in tune with what Debussy was all about...sonorities and blending. If you want percussive, go to exotic timbres (exoctic/world music was all the rage back then) or orchestral (harp, crotales), throw in a string quartet (con sord, pizz). Anyway...just my 2 cents.
