Description:
The inspiration for this song came from my friend Rel's van nicknamed "the funk mobile". My original plan was to make her some driving music, but I got carried away with the chord changes and the song ended up writing itself. Please mind the cheese at the beginning, and listen for the EP solo in the middle. (I cheated and used a couple MIDI drum loops, but I changed some of the notes around so it's all good.)

Special funk &mdash 01/10/06 - 06:38:55 AM
Joel,
Good. Good.
The bass is good.
An electric piano is good.
The drums is also good.
The composition is also good.

love that opening bass catches you. reminds me of closer by NIN. its pretty catchy. like the use of wah on this. this all goes together smoothly, and keeps you interested with nice little changes. nice piano break in the middle. this is great.

I'm proud to be Minnesotan in this site. You and Rschletty are some guys
to be proud of. Can't believe Garageband can produce such great
sounding jazz music. Your funky style is certainly felt in your music.
Amazing altogether. You've got that musical touch! 9-9-9-9

Road trip &mdash 01/13/06 - 02:55:42 PM
Great groove. The bass in the beginning really grabbed me. I'm glad it did
or else I probably would've missed this funky/jazzy van ride.
Loved the Electric piano - especially the little wah-wah effect on it.
The drums sounded great, as well!
The whole piece flowed very well - very smooth, just like the overall
sound to it.

A very nice track.
A definate download!

Nice ride... &mdash 01/13/06 - 03:25:46 PM
Hah! I could see it slink'n up the road grooven and drive'n in a cool
way. Nice laid back feel. Hip. Very hip. Saweet! And it is get'n better as
we make it down this groovy path of goodness. Hey, check out the
drum and keyboard interplay (Herbie's in the house - Or is that
RamseyL) And whose that thump'n the phat strings... Very nice choice
for bass

Well done - Glad I took this trip - Cyd

Nice tune 4EROjet! Great bass lines, and very tasty piano sounds -
liked the variation in the drums and the way you've left room between
the action. Love the ending.

but funky and enjoyable nonetheless... the solo was cool, too

Quick comment &mdash 01/15/06 - 05:30:21 AM
This is very cool and funky... the sounds and styles of playing you've
got going fit very well with the era you're hinting at here.

One comment to do with production though. Particulary in the
beginning of this song, you have the bass track (at least the wah-ed
track) panned to the right along with the EP. As a general rule of
thumb, unless you're specifically going for a Pre-1960-70 kind of
sound... keep the bass track panned in the center... because the mix
tends to sound off balance when its anywhere else. In this piece it was
eccentuated by having the EP on the right channel too with precious
little happening on the left channel for the majority of the song.

Quick comment &mdash 01/15/06 - 11:34:43 AM
you're right in the fact that that the song was weighted to the right, that was an
error. In in the beginning with the first 4 bars, the synth bass is slightly to the
right. After 4 more bars, the bass is doubled with a deep motown sound the
same distance from the center in the left ear to ballance the bass sound. But
you're right about the fusion era in the fact that the bass centers in the middle
especially when starting the song. My bad, minor error.

Beautiful &mdash 01/16/06 - 05:41:29 PM
This is excellent. I've listened to it a few times, enjoying it more each
time. Beautiful feel; bass, druums, piano, they all fit together perfectly
like a jigsaw puzzle. I'm a fan. My favorite moment is the piano break in
the middle, and my favorite part of that break is the little scale run that
goes up about an octave then back down, but it's doubled by some weird
interval in the left hand, like ninths or something like that. Quite
unexpected, but perfect. Great job!

Hail to the critic!

Thank you so much for bringing up my solo. This is also my favorite part in the
tune. The scale happens to be a diminished scale (halfstep wholestep
alternation) and the interval between the two starting notes is a b9. (flat nine,
not B9) I also like the run with the 4ths jumping every minor 3rd.

Right on theory dude!

Beautiful &mdash 01/16/06 - 09:23:22 PM
Well, just because, I listened to it again, and I'm STILL diggin' it.

Theory dude, that's me. I've been teaching theory in universities for 20 years,
believe it or not. I brought my laptop over to my piano when I was listening
to your tune and played along a bit to try to figure some of the stuff out, but I
had to stop because it was disturbing my son, who was trying to focus on his
video game.

The diminished scale is a fine scale, lots and lots of possibilities. In the
classical music world it's called an octatonic scale (a word that seems
unnecessarily fancy; "diminished scale" explains what it is a lot better), and
it's also one of Messiaen's "modes of limited transposition" (because it can
only be transposed three times before you get pitch pattern duplication.

Did you spend hours practicing scales in minor ninths and other odd interval
doublings? I do that on the guitar, possibly a sign that I had head trauma as
a child that I've forgotten about. Anyway, thanks for the tune, and great job!

this is a nice groove. Kinda reminda me of something that WAR would do, like "Lo-Rider", but more progressive. Sweetness. I would love to hear this mix pumped up a bit, really pushing all these elements out there - they sound great!

I can't believe I missed this one when you posted it out!

reminds me of some library sessions such as tracks you'll find in "music for dancefloor : the cream of the bosworth library" (strut records) or old french jazz funk such as CORTEX and RYTHM MACHINE, so damn good.

this is jazz-funk at its best, so groovy baby. if you plan to press this track on vinyl, just let me know, It'd be a pleasure to buy few copies!
