Description:
This is the first collaboration I ever did once I got my e-drum studio set up. I should point out right off the bat that my sole contribution to this one is the drums. I realize it's therefore kind of a misnomer to post the song as mine, but I hope everyone will let me slide since the real author is not yet a MacJammer.

The song belongs to a good friend of mine (and former bandmate), Stephen Bloodsworth. The song is under copyright (2005). In my humble opinion, the guy is just an amazing singer and songwriter. He sent me a CD with a bunch of his songs on it with everything recorded but drums. I feel everything was recorded and balanced perfectly. All that was left for me was to throw a simple rhythm on top and avoid getting in the way of the song.

I like the way this one came out - it's not a complex drum part, but those are some of my favorites. As part of the collaboration, I sent him the raw drum tracks as if I'd mic'ed up a real drumset - giving him the ultimate in control. What you are hearing is my lame, drum-heavy mix ... but I think it still gets the tune across.

I hope that Steve will take a look at this page and maybe soon we can convince him to become a MacJammer too!

Lyrics:
When I go to bed
I think of you
When I go to sleep
I dream of you
And in the morning light
When I lay my eyes on you
Babe it's all that I can do
To keep my head

Hardware:
Steve recorded into a Roland VS-2480 (digital work station) using a Neumann TLM103 and an Audio-Technia 3035 ... I played e-drums into my eMac

Software:
Steve's used the software native to the Roland VS-2480 ... I imported his track into GB2 and used Toontrack's dfh to sim the drum sound

Nice work &mdash 01/14/06 - 02:46:55 PM
This is a nice tune, he's got a nice voice, and the song really flows well. That's an e-drum set-up? Sounds great! The snare in the choral part seems sort of "heavy" for such a song - but the playing is very good. Overall - very cool!

Thanks for the kind words. Regarding the snare reverb in the choral part ... I don't know that I got what Steve was looking for there. I think he wanted a big snare sound, but it probably needed to be warmer. If I had any mix skills at all, I'm sure I could have worked a little EQ in or something to take a bit of the edge off. Thanks for the feedback, I'm sure it will be incorporated when Steve does his final mix.

Cool song! &mdash 01/15/06 - 08:24:01 AM
Really nice flow to this... I see what you mean by drum heavy. The drums
are a little loud in places but everything seems to be located in the right
spots. But as you say, it's relatively simple and therefore perfect for this
song. What is so nice about this song is it's simplicity. It can be easy to
lose a song by trying to fill it out too much.

Vocals are excellent I love that beautiful harmony. Guitar mix and sound
is perfect! Hopefully Steve will join us in the alternate music universe that
is MacJams.

Cool song! &mdash 01/19/06 - 08:09:43 AM
Re: "drum heavy" ... I think I need to listen more to albums that are out there before I start mixing. Admittedly, this was just my rough mix prior to shipping the raw drum files to Steve for his mixing pleasure. Still, I'm sure I would be able to mix better if I kinda "set" my ears beforehand. I guess it's easy for a drummer to put his drumkit front and center ... apparently I'm guilty as charged!

I also agree with you in hoping that Steve joins us soon. Heck, it's free, right?

nice feel for slow rhythm &mdash 01/18/06 - 09:57:26 PM
Glad you posted this Mike - I was keen to hear how those e-drums
sounded in a song, and this was no disappointment I can assure you.
Firstly, the song: I really liked the simple way this song unfolded - the
great voice and really nice harmony work, as well as the guitar. The
production is also very good.
Hard to imagine that the drums aren't the real deal, except for the
change in snare sound mentioned already. You have a very nice feel
for slow rhythm, which not all drummers have - you also show a
creative use of the sounds at your disposal. I suspect you might get
quite a bit of virtual work here on MJ - you certainly will from me (if
you're interested).
Good post,
Neil

nice feel for slow rhythm &mdash 01/19/06 - 08:18:47 AM
Hey, man - glad you like the drum sound. I do want to clarify a bit - the sounds you hear are not the ones that come out of the e-drums. I use the e-drum set shown in my profile pic just to record a MIDI performance. Then I use a kind of "drum simulator" to turn that performance into drum sounds that are pretty life-like (IMHO). I've been on a lot of recording gigs, so I've heard what my real drum tracks normally sound like. I don't work for Toontrack (the makers of my drum sim), but I believe the drum tracks that are output from the sim are so realistic that most drummers would not be able to tell the difference between the sim and live tracks.

And regarding the virtual work ... I sincerely hope you're right - I love the online collabbing! Thanks for the kind comments.

Let me know when this guy joins Macjams! This was a very pleasant tune and I really liked the drumming. The feel of the reminded me a bit Calexico/iron and wine EP. It sounds to me like you are en exceptional drummer!Your playing is so gentle! I have listened to this many times now, I love it!

Very cool... more please... &mdash 02/07/07 - 09:55:12 PM
I love the direction of this song. It has a pop-rock appeal that is rare in radio songs nowadays. Vocals are heartfelt and the tune has a very endearing sentimentality to it. Only thing is, it's too short and kinda abbreviates my listening pleasure. Would be good to lengthen this by a verse or two and add a little more instrumental embellishment to give it a fuller pro sound. By and in itself, it is a very good listen. Truly admire this piece!

Beautiful song, and I listened especially to the drums. And they're just how I would like them to be. Relaxed and listening to what's going on with the rest of the musicians.

Bravo!
