Description:
This piece, composed by Tom Delaney, is in the public domain. The earliest recording I’ve found of is from somewhere between 1911 and 1920 (see more below).

Personally I have known it forever since it was in the collection of old 78 records in the home of my childhood - then recorded by the superb mouth harmonica trio ”Hotha Trio”.

Later, when I had left my parent’s home (30+ years ago) I made this arrangement based on my memory of that recording.

Have allways liked this arrangement but it has been a bit to difficult for me to play the bass line togehter with the melody in a smooth way. Within the last years I have made several attempts to record it but never gotten satisfied.

Today, while weeding out amongst miscellaneous recordings made last autumn, I found this one. It does not float on perfectly smoothly either, but I found it to run on cooler than I use to play it. I kind of liked the mood and decided to post.

While exploring the net today I found this old and beautiful (1911-1920) recording of the tune. It is public domain and for you interested I put it here http://johannesmusik.se/JazzMeBlues

Proof positive... &mdash 01/15/06 - 10:39:00 AM
...of the existence (and potential) of the bicameral brain...

Although in your case, Curry, I think it might be the tricameral brain...
Or maybe an extra brain in your fingers just to keep track of
ascending and descending lines... Like the stegosaurus of the guitar...
And you thought you were just a spice...

This is very bright and lively, and the playing has a lot of life in it.
Maybe you weren't being totally 'serious' on this take or something, so
you could have some fun with it. Well, having fun with it, that would be
a fourth brain right there... Or MAYBE, having fun with it is what
happens when one or more of the other brains is disengaged...

As you know, the ragtime feel is not my favorite realm of music, but it
is also true that, as far as I know, ragtime "blues" is/was a fun music, a
joyful music, and you're one of the guys that can keep the aspect of joy
in it.

Thanks a lot Ed! And I learned a series of new terms here too, must have known
them some time but they have got lost in the whorls of my mind.

Anyway you saw through the situation perfectly well: Quoting your comment:
"Maybe you weren't being totally 'serious' on this take or something, so you
could have some fun with it".

So true! Really pro. If my mind will ever need a doctor I wanna have someone
with your perspicacity :-)

Sometimes I forget who I am listening to &mdash 01/15/06 - 11:00:50 AM
When I listen to you now, Johannes, I forget that I am on MacJams, a
free music site populated by amateurs. Instead, it's more like 1978, I
have just bought Ry Cooder's latest album "Jazz," and have placed in
on my turntable, listening closely and enjoying each note. You are
really in a class by yourself on this site. Not to take anything away from
the other fine guitarists here. I am not comparing anyone (except
maybe you and Ry Cooder). Your style, authority, joy, technique and
musicianship are just yours alone. I read your comment to
composerclark (on "Last Dance") about hoping to be able to create
music like his some day? Maybe that day has already arrived?

Thanks a lot Tom! Your warm comment and your enduring support makes life
brighter.

p.s. Many have mentioned this Ry Cooder now, think it's time for me soon to
listen to something he has done.

to my ears this is you at your absolute best - it's the pinkest, the fluffiest to be found around - dancing around the kitchen, up the stairs and around again. i downloaded about 30 seconds in and put it straight onto loop as soon as it arrived in itunes. now it's off to the ipod and it will go with me wherever igo! thank you, thank you for sharing this joy - you have gladdened my heart xxx

the bear is really taken with it too x

one of my premier goals for music making is to hit that tone that get you
dancing Caroline ... the last time must have been last summer because, if i
remember this right, you were then dancing in the garden together with, and
upon, the garden furniture

and i appreciate what a huge bonus it must be to have caused also the bear to
leg around ... would have loved to be there in the kitchen dancing around with
you guys ...

Great mixing :) &mdash 01/15/06 - 03:03:31 PM
Curry, I love the way you have blended the three or four tracks on this
into one - incredible how you are able to play each separate track so
well (the bass, rhythm and lead all sound very professional) and then
combine them like this. Just joking!

Sometimes I listen to MJ tunes and think "I could play that if I practised
really hard" - I never think that when I hear one of yours. You have
such mastery of the guitar that I usually just sit slack-jawed listening
and then consider how much practice you must have done over the
years to reach this point. This is another delightful C.A. experience -
clean, character-filled playing so close to perfection, but with just
enough looseness that the soul of the piece (and the player) comes
through loud and clear. Love it!
Neil

Wow Neil ... sometimes I just don't know what to say ... hope it suffices to say
that I appreciate your appreciation a LOT! Am especially pleased that you digged
the "loosness" and felt the soul came through!

p.s. you had me for a while ... thought you were commenting another tune at
first :)

Completely enjoyable. Bravo... crystal clear as if you were right here.
Curry, you capture the heart of this old tune perfectly. And your
guitar playing.... well, what is there left to say? Fav'd, DL'd, and....

Kudos.

What a great piece of music, so well played!
Perfect to listen to after I've been working on a rather melancholy
composition of my own.

Thank you for this, Curry!

The UPside of Blues &mdash 01/15/06 - 08:26:47 PM
Another terrific and interesting rendition of a piece from a genre too
long overlooked by so many.

And this little number playfully evokes the UPside of the blues.

As I've mentioned to thetiler, when I hear your fingerpicking (and his)
talents, I wish I would have applied myself more to this technique.

You make it sound so easy... and so fluent... when I know it requires a
great deal of dedication and practice.

Another great job, Curry. ;-)

The UPside of Blues &mdash 01/16/06 - 02:25:06 PM
Nice to hear you people liking the tune. Personally I have no perspective since I
in some strange way am in love with most of the old 78:s I grew up with.

And for you Joe. Without turning away your supporting words (I eat them)
I would anyway like to say that it is easy to overlook ones own treassures. To
play such tasteful and soulful rock n' roll guitar as you do on your recordings ...
that is something to just dream of ... feels unattainable...

another "feel-good" tune! &mdash 01/16/06 - 10:02:31 AM
Your excellent guitar playing and equally great choice of musical material ALWAYS puts a smile on my face and a spring in my step!

This tune has a nice, upbeat jazzy triplet feel to it, like a fast walk.

The recording quality is very "live"-sounding, almost "hot". But it captures the realism of your playing very well; I hear all the little picks and slides as though my head was a few inches from your guitar.

Nice percussive slaps at the end! After the last note fades away, I hear some distortion.....

Great job as always -- performance and material.

Happy to hear that the music made you smile Cameron!

Yes it is has a very livy feeling to it. Played it in an intermission while resting
between recordings (that were intended for The Noel Project).

Had no thought of posting it. And so yes, the noises are there; at the end as well
as all the other imperfections...

Fabulous &mdash 01/16/06 - 12:29:11 PM
Absolutely great!
How you create sounds like that out of that six-string is beyond me...

So entertaining, so playful and so good.

I don't think there's anything more needed - nay - *possible* to say!

Great!

Big Grin &mdash 01/16/06 - 07:08:29 PM
all over my face from this tune. You can hear the love within your fingers for this old favorite song of yours. I can almost hear the vinyl and the crackle of the needle as this song does its happy little dance. This is simply delightful and absolutely the big grin ending to my day. Thanks for sharing your sunshine, Cori Ander!

Wow, thank you Bing for reading the depths of the situation and the music. A
comment to remember!

Well, one thing I associate to the collection of 78 records, is sunshine! In my
memory the sun was allways shining on the parquet floor when I were sitting
there playing these record again and again. They were many, at least a hundred.
Could keep on for hours. Was around 4 to 6 years old. Time didn't exist.
