Description:
As most of my piano pieces do, this started out as an improvisation--trying to play something in the classical mode, and reminded of various sonatinas I practiced growing up.
Once finished, I cleaned it up in the track editor (thank goodness for GarageBand!), extended it a little, and set it aside, not knowing quite what more to do with it.
While I thought it might sound apt with haunting, ambient voices under it, I'm not much of a bass ;) So, after letting it sit for a few weeks, I opted to add strings to it.
Here's what I came up with. I hope you enjoy it.
(Thanks, too, to Tom Atwood for various listens and critiques along the way!)

Hi rainbow child &mdash 01/16/06 - 07:35:31 AM
This is beautiful, but sad. Maybe I should read your liner notes. It
sounds very reflective, but most solo's are just that, I think...
You do continue to astound me w/ the many different places that you
are able to journey a person to. This really amazes me and it always
gives me something to be on seats edge for when I see your name. I
have yet to be let down Mysty - Thanks for sharing - Cyd [ Reply to This ]

Cyd,
You're so sweet! Rainbow Child, indeed! I can't decide what color....green? blue?
magenta, orange??
Music is so incredibly diverse...I just want to stop and paint a lot of different
colors while I have the chance!
I'm glad you find the rainbow interesting!
Thanks so much for you comments--on this song and others of mine.

I like the piano, string compliment. Very soft , sweet, melancholy. You have a very nice touch on the keyboard. Impressive, especially since this partially improvised. Great piece...bravo Ms M. [ Reply to This ]

Beautiful piece. Piano is well played, especially considering it's done on a
non-weighted keyboard (is that right?).
Could easily be a movie score. Very emotional and deep.
Very nice work, Mystified.
Also, I love your banner!

Thanks for your comments, John!
The keyboard I use is technically 'semi-weighted' so there is a little resisitance,
but not much. I think I'd go bonkers on a keyboard with no 'touch,' I'm so used
to playing on a piano.

Thanks, alley
One of these days, I'll have to do a happy ragtime kinda piece. Of course, that
will necessitate practicing a couple hours a day...or hours in the track editor
building it note by note..
Nah...maybe not ;)
Thanks for stopping by to listen and for your comments.
I appreciate it.

to express the deep sense of wonder and beauty that this piece laid on
my heart Cat. Your composition/pianist skills are as beautiful as your
voice. Thank you so much for making this day, my birthday, a terrific day
filled with peace and love.
God bless,

Rick,
Yours is possibly one of the nicest comments I've received.
I'm grateful that you found 'wonder and beauty' in this song.
I just feel very blessed that I found my way back to creating music and can share
it with so many in this way.
Thanks, again :)

Mozartian! &mdash 01/16/06 - 01:13:47 PM
Hi Cat:
What a talented person you are! This piece reminds me a bit of Elvira
Madigan...although more delicate and slowly timed....shows a great
musical sensitivity. I'd like to hear a symphonic rendition of this...Peace

Mozartian! &mdash 01/18/06 - 12:31:45 AM
Thanks, Norman, for your comments and for your support, here!
I would like to do more orchestral/symphonic pieces in the future.
Right now, I'm still sort of just playing around with ideas and improvisations.
Actually, getting back to playing the piano (keystation) has been quite the
adventure.
We'll see where it leads...
Thanks so much, again!

Really lovely &mdash 01/16/06 - 03:24:27 PM
but would we expect anything less? No! I love the classical piano feel...the
strings complement the melody very nicely . Gentle and haunting. Your
instrumental skills are as noteworthy as your vocal ability
Keep them coming

Very pleasant &mdash 01/16/06 - 06:03:21 PM
I enjoyed listening to this. With the song art, it really did make me think of a rainy fall day, hanging out in the gazebo at Manor Park, looking at a grey Long Island Sound. I wish I could play like that! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks, David, for your comments.
You're always so supportive and I admire your own ability to compose!
As for playing the piano.... There's a wonderful freedom to being able to improvise and record those improvisations. I've never had more fun playing the piano, and it's nice to know others are enjoying what is coming out of that.
Thanks again.

MMMmmmmm...."bittersweet" doesn't even come close. How beautiful and tragic this piece is, it floats on clouds, gray and heavy with rain. Your touch is warm and sure, and your expression, melodically and rhythmically, is stunning. Love, love, LOVE that ritard into the deep breath...and a pause before continuing. So tasty - your voice was not on here physically, but you manifested it so well into this performance, that it's as if you were singing with your fingers. Bravo!

Dignified sadness, or melancholy... The piano tone is outstanding... The
strings are just subtle enough...
Certainly has an autumnal feel...
Lovely.

pretty darned pretty &mdash 01/17/06 - 10:17:50 AM
You definitely caught the cool breezy wisps of Autumn air, scattering
leaves across the barren parking lot of life. Nice flowing piano playing,
deliciously mournful sweetness brought out by the string accompinament.
One thing I noticed is that you end on an unresolved chord, which "leaves"
the listener hanging, waiting for the final note to come, which it never
does. Normally this bothers me, but in this case, it adds to the longing
sensation, and seems perfect. Another Mystical performance,
FanaticallyFaved, and DelightfullyDownloaded, to play on these cold rainy
days!

Quite tasty &mdash 01/17/06 - 03:27:43 PM
A good extended "Albumblatt", originating from a melody which bears
your personal style. I like it, though I regret strings being at times so
parallel to piano parts, thus resulting in poor voicings. Harmony variants
are exquisite anyhow, all coherently dating to a first romanticism. [ Reply to This ]
mm sleep &mdash 01/17/06 - 08:09:10 PM
why do i always listen to these beautiful instrumentals when i'm sleepy? it's beautiful and the strings worked well. i actually think this may work better then the vocals idea, but then again who knows if done right that would be great. maybe you can find someone to test it out with vocals? this is a nice piece. Beautiful &mdash 01/18/06 - 03:13:07 AM
Beautiful piece, indeed. I love what the strings bring to it - subtle but
very effective. There are some beautiful chord progressions in there. I
love chord changes that take you off guard and this has its fair share of
those. [ Reply to This ]
Mmmm &mdash 01/18/06 - 03:40:23 AM
Mmmmm Mysti .. Like this a lot. It gives such a peace to my room
where I listen. You have made this with such a great taste,
I can tell you that often peaceful or meditative music make me drowsy
and listless, but this is different. This is made wiht clear sight and
"wakefulness" (dont know if it's the right term) - still peacfull and
meditative ...
Hope you get what I'm trying to say. It is a kind ot mysic I dont want to
stop anyway. Could have been thrice as long. I'll have to set it on
repeat...

First of all... &mdash 01/18/06 - 09:01:23 AM
...thank you for not waiting to post this until next fall - for this really is
an autumn piece. I can just smell the rainsoaked grass and the slowly
'undressing' trees. Ahhh...
This piece is gorgeous. The piano sounds great and the strings have
just the right amount of subtlety. I think I heard some distortion in the
piano in places, but it might just be my old speakers.
I would've liked to hear this even longer, but like Cori Ander I'll just set
it on repeat a couple of times.
All in all a beautiful melancholic piece, which for some reason makes
me look forward to the rainy fall.
Beautiful. [ Reply to This ]
expressive rubato &mdash 01/18/06 - 09:40:08 AM
Very expressive sound and rubato in the beginning solo piano.
Effective blending of sustained strings a little further on. Nice build-up of intensity.
Good chord shift after the string swell.
Nice pause before the next phrase.
The cadenza-like piano part is a good change of pace -- I would have liked to hear a little more quickening of the notes there, more "cadenza-like".
This minor mode creates a "Schindler's List" type of mood, very introspective and sad, as though much grief has been experienced recently, but the main character in the story survives.
Very effective use of higher strings towards the end.
Lovely bottom piano note, ending on the dominant chord. Nice touch!
The combination of piano and strings is extremely pleasing. I would have liked to hear more dynamic shading in the strings at times; their level was a bit high when sustained, here and there. The dynamics of the strings was truly artful when they made their first entrance -- softer, more subtle.
Your musicality and emotions always shine through brightly in your pieces, and this one is no exception. Nice work! [ Reply to This ]

kiddo &mdash 01/19/06 - 02:40:36 PM
another piece of the heart for all to see. Your piano playing is
becoming so fluid...and the strings are very unsynthetic. I agree that a
YoYo Ma cello stating the melody would be sweet. or a nice classical
guitar. I wish i had a nylon string...but alas.....or is it alad?...
great work as always caffeeen

Very nice, atmospheric piece. &mdash 01/19/06 - 03:27:04 PM
Nice voicings. There were a few places in the piano part that I wasn't sure
if you were playing rubato or just unsure of which note came next. Small
imperfection in an otherwise lovely song. The string bed certainly adds a
lot to it. Lovely, longing progressions. [ Reply to This ]
