Description:
As I've been noticing a good number of people's older works being posted, it seemed appropriate to take this one out of mothballs.
This is a Christmas song from a slightly different persepctive, written specificaly for professing Christians. It was recorded in 1994 for what was supposed to be a debut album. However, through a series of unfortunate events, this and other songs ended up pretty much as demos.
With the exception of two of the background vocals, I'm performing everything. Unfortunately, I ended up having to mix the song myself as the guy who owned the studio eventually admitted that he didn't have such a great ear.
Posting this also buys me time -- as well as inspire me -- to actually compose something else new.
Conceptually, this song may not be everyone's cup of tea. Musically, someone may find it interesting.
Lyrics:
When I was six years old
Christmas was the time of year
For exchanging gifts in Christmas cheer
Then my heart grew cold
The meaning went its merry way
It was just another holiday
But now, as I draw near to you
The more I know what is true
Praise the Lord I'm not just
Going throught the motions anymore
Many believe you lived
Born the Son of God in man
Bringing love into the land
But trivial thoughts they give
Thinking so habitual
So given in to ritual
But some have given their lives to You
For a relationship that's genuinely true
Praise the Lord they're not just
Going through the motions anymore
Baby Jesus, in a manger
Born in poverty
Grew into a man
Who shed His blood on Calvary
We've got to do it right
No reflex Christianity
No seasonal insanity
Jesus is the Light
Celebrate Him every day
As a people let us pray
Lord, we want to worship You
In all that we say and do
Praise the Lord we're not just
Going through the motions anymore

Very creative vocal work and great message! I like this a lot. The style
reminds me of Stevie Wonder. Upbeat and refreshing! [ Reply to This ]

Wow, the first comment for this song. I was wondering if any Christians
were listening to this. Cool. Thanks for listening. Yes, I've been told
many times that I sound like Stevie Wonder. It'll probably be written on
my tombstone. :-) [ Reply to This ]

Hey Phil, this is great! Wonderful lyrics, playing, and singing. I encourage
you to write some new material for the Lord.
There are a number of Christians on this site besides Roxylee and myself.
I'll send you a list.
God bless,
Rick [ Reply to This ]

Yes, definitely write some more. You sound good in the vocals and I
really like the musical arrangement of the verses. We all need good, well
thought songs, and yes, there are many people listening to the songs.!!
It's good. Have fun and God Bless. [ Reply to This ]

I found your forum post "christian artists" to be the most
comprehensive and concise.... so I followed up and listened to what
you were doing... You have a unique and fresh approach... not at all
canned or contrived.... I love your voice... it's very much like your
writing... presice and on target... the technical and musical skills in this
post are impresive... I'm suprised that I haven't run across you until
now
