(THIS IS THE FIRST BEBOP SONG EVER TO BE PUT ON MACJAMS!!!)

Rush man rush, study...don't let the man get you down! He ain't dishin' out anything you can't eat! You gotta get this grade, you gotta nail this test! If you can nail this test, you'll slip by just like all those other years. C'mon man, this is the last math class you'll ever have to take again...

Jesus, what kind of math test was this... I wouldn't have passed, I'm thinking. Or maybe you were making things more difficult than they needed to be, and for this, we are rewarded... Thanks for sharing your experience in this way. I can't wait to hear what it sounds like when you are say, humm, let see... I wanna hear what it sounds like when you contemplate world peace... Yea that's it - Please share....

No. Kidding of course, I might not be able to comprehend the sounds of you chewing gum, so lets not get carried away for me. LOL

I do like this and I like it when I don't exactly get it the first time around. It means there's lots to explore, and upon each listen. That's what I like most about what I've heard from you thus far. Keep it up and thanks mister 4.

Thanks for tuning in. Yes, I often make real world stresses a little more stressful
by procrastinating. I usually ignore school work (primarily math homework) only
to rock out instead. It's all about rocking out, or having fun. The man can't kill
tallent. I'd like to collab some time.

Unfortunately I've never been much of a fan of Beebop or free jazz
(Prefer there to be more structure) but I can hear what you're doing
here and its pretty cool. On one level it reminds me of the Trio
Improvisations that Chick corea did which were quite crazy. I like the
effort you've put into the drumming here, keeping it interesting and
free... unfortunately theres still a little way to go before the drums (and
bass) would sound realistic to me.

One thing that I think is getting to me is that the drum and bass
sounds that you are using (very short and muted) I relate much more to
funk music than beebop. A much looser sound to the drums and an
acoustic bass would go a fair way for me (with a bit of tweaking and
trying to think like a bass player... the garageband acoustic bass can
sound very realistic in my opinion).

Although this isn't my preferred style of Jazz, I can hear the effort
you've put into this. Well done... and when are you playing this live?

I understand that your style and preference is to make songs that sound real
even though computer generated, but I'm glad you still found joy in my song's
content. True, the intentions of this song were to display emotion rather than
create a real sound. I may go back and tweak it sometime in the future.

This is really the first MacJams bebop tune? That's surprising. I love
bebop; the guy whose music totally got me interested in jazz was Charlie
Parker. This is excellent! I can't wait to hear more. Not sure if you have
had a chance to check out my three jazz tunes here (Late Night Blues, href="http://http://www.macjams.com/song/16517">Industrial Park
Stomp
, Suspicious Activity), but if you haven't, I'd be curious to

I like your approach to this comment!

The drawing was done by my buddy James, and I'll have to add that to the song
description. OK, so I don't really know the Ionian scales, but I know that Ionian is
one of the modes, and those were modal licks I was playing. Ionian? hmm, I just
played it by ear...I knew there was a term for it just didn't know what it was. As
for Jaco, I love the man. Weather Report FOREVER!!!

Ionian mode = Major scale. If you heard an unusual mode, Ionian wouldn't be it!

The only reason I made such a statement in the first place is because I asked
Simon to add the Bebop genre and felt somewhat responsible for sumbitting to
it. I'm glad you liked the noise...!

I'd be darned if i was capable of doing anything like this-- or anything
nearly as impressive as this in any field-- at age 17...You're some kind
of a jazz Mozart, Joel... There are many great singers at that age..but
jazz artists of this caliber? Your musical creativity is stunning, and to
think that your talent at this age is supposedly primordial. If you keep
this pace of progress, it wont be hard to imagine you on the Grammy
podium one day.

are you playing an electric upright or a regular fretless? the bass sounds
stellar and the piano is dialed in. the drums are impeccable.

I'm sorry to disappoint you(?) but everything was MIDI. No real instruments were
used. Heck, I wish I could play mad bass like that. To create this piece, I played
the lines on my keyboard at a slightly slower tempo and then quantized the
notes. I hope this new information doen't change your opinion of the song.
Thanks for listening though.

Excellent bass, drums and piano - very hard to fault musically. Sound-
wise, I'd probably like to hear slightly looser bass and acoustic bass as
mentioned by The Composer - maybe wouldn't improve it, but would
be an interesting experiment. Fantastic post - I too would like to see it
done live!

midi you say &mdash 01/22/06 - 08:30:48 AM
well done:)

Like the others have said - and I'm impressed. In addition to the techniques there is music. You did good on both.

If I was to say something when the tweaking of the knobs where going down - I'd go a little easy on the drums here. They are great as they are now, but.... less is more... maybe not in bebop though;)

Today seems to be my day... &mdash 01/22/06 - 09:11:32 AM
...for dipping into music I wouldn't ordinarily listen to, and finding it
good.

I'll leave the analysis of tone and phrase to those who are into this sort
of music, and just say that I enjoy the tune and the performance very
much. The feel is good, to my ears.

Since you did this in GB2 and have gotten some comments about bass
tone, you could, just for chuckles, copy that track to an empty track
and just try it with the upright, and any other sound that suits you...
I'm not saying any change is necessary, but it's so easy in this program
to try things different ways that it might be fun and interesting.

Very enjoyable. Gratefully downloaded.

Reet, man. This smokes like a basement in the Upper Haight. Is this something you've got notated somewhere? I would love to hear this live - it's thrilling jazz (don't know if I'd call it be-bop) that's dramatic and complex without being too "out there." Short and sweet, too. I know some poets who would love to drop some words to this nugget of goodness. Awesome job, slick!

Kick Ass, Kick Ass, Kick Ass! You remind me of my brother when he came
back from Berklee. Keep writing this stuff my man. Get a whole album of
it together and get it to an A&R rep at Blue Note or another label. Do it by
the time you are 19 so you have plenty of time to give music a real shot.

Not really a jazz guy but I like this. Its fine the way it is but if you ever wanted to remix, I could definitly hear a woodwind of some kind in there and a slower tempo.

The base really carries the song but I would have liked to have heard more piano....and more cowbell. Gotta have more cowbell.

(just kidding on the cowbell)

Still has that factory smell to it &mdash 08/29/06 - 09:47:40 PM
As ridiculous as this may sound, the midi's sound TOO midi-ish. Maybe its the ultra-crispness to it, that it sounds like it came from a bunch of daty bytes and not a recording booth, but I still like how it all went down regardless. Its a solid piece. I don't know if you have a way to rough up the overall sound, but muting it's sharpness might give it a little more drive and a little less showroom floor, y'dig?

Great piece of creativity.

Love how it starts with an elevator-jazz, George Winstron sound to the piano voicing, and then breaks into a frenetic bebop sound. The bass sounds like Jaco -- which ain't easy to do. And it's all just right.

Thank you,
