Lyrics:
It's all about love, pussycatFrances was a little pretty kitty
Steve took her driving round the city
In his brand new Cadillac
Made of toothpicks and a ton of shellac
Poor little Stevie
He had an ethical dilemma:
Should he keep his naughty paws off her?
Love may come and love may go
But Stevie there's only one way to know
Make your move, flick your tail
Strut around like an alpha male
Frances has a weakness it is true
She's been a catnip junky since she was two
She likes to snort it
With boys like you
Oh yeah, that's the way she likes it... meeeooww!
Go, go, Stevie! It's time to make your move!
Go, go, Stevie! What have you got to lose?
Go, go, Stevie! It's time to make your move!
Go, go, Stevie! What have you got to lose?
Frances was a little pretty kitty
Steve took her driving round the city
In his brand new Cadillac
Made of toothpicks and a ton of shellac
Oh come on Stevie! You're a cat, not a chicken, right?
Love may come and love may go
But Stevie you ought to know
Frances loves you, listen to her purr...
It's time for you to pet her fur
Grooming behavior is a subtle clue
Stalk her Stevie it's time to persue
Frances wants to scamper with boys like you
Love may come and love may go
But if you don't try you'll never know
Love may come and love may go
But if you don't try, how will you know?

'Ledebutant'... I smile... 'PV'... Another automatic smile, again... The two of you together... Well, I'm puzzeled as to how the initiation of the connection might happen, but therin lies the magic of this duet.. Two talented and very different ingredients that have come together to create a fun and 'driving' sound.... Now it all makes sense... And it makes sense that I smiled througout my entire listen. This was fun guys and of course, I thouroughly enjoyed it.
i know that there's a story behind this one, so cough it up guys...
This was fun. Thanks to the both of yas' - Cyd
perceptualvortex
Glad we made you smile with this one. The community aspect of MacJams
is nice, isn't it? I came here expecting only to find and share music and get
helpful feedback, but as a bonus I've gotten to meet and work with a
variety of other talented musicians. Ledebutant and I worked on a song
together last summer (Noodly), and during the course of that collaboration I
proposed this project to her. I'm glad she took on the challenge, and she
did a fantastic job writing the lyrics and singing. As before, working with
Lisa was a real blast and I'm happy with the way this turned out. I'm glad
you like this too. Did I cough up enough of the story :-) ? Thanks Dion!

What a zany, clever song, PV: Great changes. Tasty riffs. Great mix.
Super job getting into the feline roll, Ledebutant...meowwwza!!
perceptualvortex
Yes, zany, thank you... I knew there was an adjective for this song!
Ledebutant did do a fine job writing and singing about the antics of little
Frances and Steve... who are vying for my attention even now. I
appreciate that about the mix, and I'm glad you like this alley, thanks for
stopping by!

Of course, re: the antics, I wrote this before I knew they were brother and
sister. Thanks, Tom, for saying you like this. I know you know how important
your opinion is to me.
Tadashi Togawa
Very wonderful combination.

Very wonderful song.

I agree with Tadashi. Fun piece. Nice meow.
ledebutant
Thanks, Tom. The real question for me, though, is whether you think it's
earthy? -)
drakonis
This is a slick sultry sexy track to be sure... very cool! Excellent bounce-
along music PV, really tasty sound fx here and there. The lyrics were
beautifully smirky-fun, and Ledeb, your delivery was purrrfect (I know
who Miss Chaos should hand her cat-suit off to now.) Sometimes your
delivery meter wandered a little off the track of the music, but that's what
cats do, you *meant* to do that to be unique I'm sure. :-) There's a little
Stevie in all of us guys, sigh, Come on Stevie, what ARE you waiting for? I
enjoyed this tremendously! Very well performed and produced.
ttfn,
Drakonis
perceptualvortex
Awesome, thank you Drakonis! I'm really glad you enjoyed our tune. I
agree about Ledeb's writing and vocal delivery, which are just great.

kevmikwa
... but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate this track! What a quirky toon! There is definitely a backstory here (and I'm sure it's tied to the picture on the song page), but I'm going to let sleeping ... uh ... cats ... lie. I concur with drakonis regarding the off-timeyness (most notable through the chorus at 0:50 - "love may come and love may go"). I concur with his opinion about it as well - it's a human element and it doesn't really detract from the tune. The big drum fill pattern that first makes its appearance at 1:26 gets a fair amount of use, but I realize that's a loop limitation that's tough to get around. Spoken like a nit-picky drummer, eh? I loved the playfulness of the tune and everything is mixed really well. Mad kitty propers to the both of you!
perceptualvortex
Hey, you're a nit-picky drummer too, cool! Heheh, I know what you mean
about that drum fill. In fact, there are some other elements of the music
(which is all loops... 55 of them) like the piano which might be a bit
repetitive; I put some time into changing things up, but usually that
distracted from the vocals, and made the music bed even more complex
than it is. My rule of thumb for these kinds of songs is "quit distracting from
the vocals you fool!" And it has to be phrased that way to get through my
drum focused brain. As for the backstory... well, as Drakonis put it, there's
a little Stevie in all us guys! Thanks for listening and commenting
kevmikwa, I'm glad you dug this!

illuminati
This is like Tonya Donnelly doing "Henry and James" by Thomas Dolby
(perhaps even giving a nod to Dolby's later fixation on Funkadelic and
horn stabs). It's sexy and reproving all at once. But I don't for a second
think that this is about two cats, one promiscuous and one reserved.
Hmmmmm, what could this be about.
Very fun and different to be sure. Lisa, the vocals sound better every time
out and your phrasing is gaining confidence by the moment (almost wrote
meowment). PV, you always seem to be taking risks in your music and
they always work.
screamalexz
you stole a picture of my cat!creative lyrics hehe. love the vocals. nice
production. i like how the vocals change for part of it and make it more
behind the song. good use of effects. i like the sort of rough song to
the vocals at parts. love the car sound it adds. oh a nice add of wind
instruments. a fun beautiful song i think. can't think of any criticism,
this is too high of quality for me to be able to think of any sugjestions.

one of the quirkiest and original songs I have ever heard. I loved it.
David- extremely cool music bed, lots of things going on and a great mix

ledebutant
Well, I've had a stab at translating your comment, Sunbeam, with a Swedish-
to-English dictionary and I'm a poor translator, but I think the first part of
what you said is wondering whether the cats really are in love. The cats
belong to David, who made the music for this song and they are brother and
sister, but I didn't know that when I wrote the words. (I think it's more fun to
write about being in love, anyway. :-) )
I hope your daddy comes by to translate for us, since I'd really like to answer
any other questions you asked.
Cori Ander
Hi LeDebutant and PerceptualVortex,
Daddy translator here ...
Wow, you really made a job trying to get this. Comment writing is Sunbeams
new hobby. She sits by herself listening around, discarding almost all songs,
but some few passes and gets comments. So feel chosen!
Translation:
I am a cat lover, therefore I like this song. But I like your voice the most!
Cori Ander
oh, forgot the heading:
Glad that you like cats
PS. Sunbeams spelling is somtetimes faar from "right", (=what you can find in a
dictionary), so I understand that you must have had some trouble .. (sometimes
difficult even for me...)
perceptualvortex
I don't know any Swedish, but I was glad to get Sunbeam's comment
because it prompted me to listen to her song, which I really like! There's
got to be a free web translator... Steve and Frances are brother and
sister, but they do enjoy curling up together as in the photo. And Steve
hasn't actually finished his toothpick car yet.

underdog.
hey ld -
this is a very well produced song - i can't tell if that bass is real is not,
but thats a good thing (especially if it isnt!). The vocals range from
VERY sexy to very alternative a la breeders/rentals, etc.
i think replacing the piano rhythm with electric guitar power chords
would make this an all out rock song. i can't tell if its my personal
taste, but the bass line might be a bit off key coming into the bridge -
but it corrects itself quickly.
this is the first piece fo your's i've heard and it's a good one!

perceptualvortex
Well, here I go spoiling it for you: the bass is all made of loops, and so is
the rest of the non-vocal music. Some might say that this is therefore only
a 'demo' or perhaps that I'll never be ready to play live :-) I like all out
guitar rock too, as you'll notice from my other tunes, but here I was going for
something more... oh, how you say?... 'pink and fluffy'. Actually, I wanted
a good balance of old-timey and futuristic (or retro-futuristic) which is why I
went with the instrumentation I did and the vocal effects. Hey thanks for
sharing your thoughts underdog., I appreciate you stopping by here!

Steve and Frances
The Composer
A fun, boppy track, very nicely produced. I quite like how the mood of
this piece sorta switches between a couple of styles... sort of "Mustang
Sally" then to sort of a .... Ska? type sound. Very interesting. I don't
notice the looping of the drums that much here because there's alot of
stuff happening which is keeping everything very interesting. As to
the singing... I quite like the moments where Lisa drifts in and out of
time/tune... reminds me very much of singers who's job it is to be sexy
rather than musical which suits this song very well.
Great work
perceptualvortex
Thanks about the production; it was much more complicated than I had
expected, and I'm quite pleased with the final mix. Hey thanks for listening
Bryan, I'm glad you like this and I appreciate your comment!

Shades of Liz Phair at the start for me on this one - like it. Didn't grab

impressed. Great singing, playing and production! It's always good to
hear collabs which work this well . . . . . .and what Sunbeam said :)

Pie
This cool, but I the accompanyment is a little disjointed. Not in
arrangement but in it's performance. It's a minor quibble but the 'Only
Fools And Horses' (the brits will know what i mean) sounding piano at
the begining of the verse just doesn't sit well with me. It's a bit 'pub
knees up' whereas other parts of the song sound so contemporary. Hey
- what do i know.
Great tune and vox.
Pie
perceptualvortex
I never heard of that show until now... and of course I've been searching
around for the theme music. I found one guy's midi version of the theme,
which maybe is close enough--anyway, it certainly is similar to the piano in
this tune. Thanks for listening Pie, I'm glad you like it minus the quibble,
and I appreciate your honest comment!
---
Steve and Frances
Pie
The whole quibble thing probably just boils down to the fact it reminds me a
little of that TV show. It's huge in the UK.
be cool,

Very fun, you guys! Very fun!
David: Very nice, bouncy music. Kudos to you!
Lisa: You don't sound quite as innocent in this one as you do in your
"After All" (my personal favorite of yours), but it's all good :)
"Meeeeooowwww", indeed!
Great job!
dreadmon
This is just screaming out to be made into a cartoon, albeit, an R-rated cartoon! This is the feline version of "Paradise By The Dashboard Lights", with its grooves and with Lisa's dramatization of this tune - -this qualifies as more than just a song, this gets into the realm of musical theater, for me. Great job guys - I was so taken away and transported by the concept that I just don't have any nitpicking whatsoever. Thanks for making such a fun and unusual track!
Ed Hannifin
...first off, that I almost missed this tune entirely, and secondly, I
realized that the reason THAT happened is that I don't have David
fav'd...ridiculous oversight, for which I apologize...
This is truly cute, you two. It's clever, it's sexy, it's funny, and the Peter
Gunnish vibe is true to the shellac Cadillac...
I have a hard time imagining how you DO an collab like this...like, does
Lisa just write words to the groove? If she feels like adding a verse or a
bridge or an extra couplet, does that happen, or does she just work
with what's there?... You don't have to spill the secrets if you don't feel
like it, but I'm genuinely curious as to how it all gets done...
Or did the lyrics come first?
Now I'm going to be wondering all night...
Nicely done, you guys.
Ed
ledebutant
Well, you missed the first step which is that David gives me a basically
finished piece of music, circa three months ago. Then I procrastinate
ridiculously, write the first four lines of the song and then nothing else for six
weeks, then sit down with the music and write the whole thing in an hour,
then swear I'll never procrastinate again as long as I live.
Yes, I did just write words to fit the music. I had an iPod and a piece of paper
and just wrote one line at a time as I pressed play and stop on the iPod. This
music was really very complete, so I didn't have to help with the arrangment
at all; I worked with what was already there (which was terrific) After I
recorded my vocals, I handed the dry vox track over to David and he recut the
song, made the vocals sound like something, added f/x, tightened and
loosened timing, added some extra music and voila!!! Kitties a-go-go
I'm so glad you liked the song, Ejh!
perceptualvortex
Cool, another fan! Well Lisa explained it pretty completely, and I sure
hope you didn't lose too much sleep before the explanation arrived.
Last summer caroline mentioned that my tunes were ok but she really
preferred songs with more pink and fluffy. I took this as a good challenge,
and made most of the music heard here. But it really needed vocals, so I
asked Lisa and she kindly offered to help. I think she did a really great job
with both lyrics and singing.
I didn't change the basic music that much after getting Lisa's tracks... I
replaced some of the bass and drum parts, changed the lengths of some
parts, added and removed some sounds and spent most of the time
tweaking the levels, fx and panning.
I'm glad you like this Ed, thanks!
