Description:
This is a piece that's turned out completely different to what I originally intended to hear. This was originally going to be a band like piece, instead, as I started to capitalise on certain aspects of the developing piece its turned out totally electronic (though I'm thinking of doing an ANTI-remix sometime soon because of this).
In particular, I'm having fun using my sister as a sampler... so I got her to sing random syllables/sounds in her range and then decided what melodies she was going to sing later. Obviously this doesn't sound natural as there's no gliss between her notes... I'll probably change this if I do an ANTI-remix... but for now I've capitalised on that.
I'm also using the plugin SupaTrigger by Bram and a monophonic synthisiser I wrote where the harmonics of the note changes with an audio trigger (in this case the drums, in particular the high hats).... This means that I've got rhythmic patterns being played by a sustained note which I think is interesting.
Lyrics:
Ahhhh.... theres parts of words here... but I don't there's anything sensical happening.
Hardware:
eMac, Condenser Mic and Behringer Eurorack Mixer, 1 female sibling.
Software:
DP 4.6, SupaTrigger by Bram, Garageband for bass synth and background texture, my sister used as a sampler, a sine wave synthisiser for some real deep bass (subwoofers should love this), a custom made monophonic audio triggered synthisiser.

Kept My Interest for the Entire Track &mdash 01/21/06 - 03:17:41 PM
Which is really tough for anything in this genre to do (to me). The
nonsense syllables are fine for me, because when the music is playing
loud at a club, words don't matter much anymore. ;)
I sense that the track is purposely icy / cold, so my feeling that perhaps
the percussion should become more pronounce later in the track (to
accent the 'climax' around the more babbling array of syllables) would
probably detract from the cool detachment you are achieving.

I like the fragmented vocals...the bass groove and those lovely piano
fills...it sounds like future music.
Nice

this is crazy. real electronic. the sampled sister is unique. not sure of anything that could be changed. maybe add words that have some sort of sense to them, and give it a bit of an enchanting feel? [ Reply to This ]
I dont consider this as dance! &mdash 01/21/06 - 06:07:42 PM
I dont consider this as dance! I almost turned away when reading the genre!! But gave it a chance, and it sounds very skilled and well produced, and its very creative!! REally like the funny voice of your sister! sounds a bit creapy!! Cool piece, i actually paid attention all the way!! [ Reply to This ]

Changed it to 'Other' just for you Selters... its either that or experimental/
electronic. Glad it kept your attention well.

woah man &mdash 01/21/06 - 06:53:20 PM
this is pretty sweet, nice vox, cool drums, sweet fx. The piano is very
fitting. It reminds me of the work of yoko kanno. It sonds very
professional. [ Reply to This ]
Can you hear me now? &mdash 01/21/06 - 09:53:48 PM
Loved the vocal treatments, the singing, the chatter... of course, I
enjoy the abstractness of it all... the back and forth interplay with
the bass and piano was nice as well. The only thing I wish was
varied a little was the effect, or treatment, of the vocals. It would
have been nice to hear the vocals come forth a little more in
areas... to break up that whole "talking on the phone" feeling... [ Reply to This ]
Can you hear me now? &mdash 01/22/06 - 05:19:20 AM
To a certain extent... keeping the vocals sounding like they were playing
through a telephone was semi deliberate... as I was capitalising on the
electronic sound I was developing. Though in retrospect, it would be a nice
way to separate the random glitched parts and the melodic singing. When I
do the ANTI-remix I'll certainly be concentrating on making the vocals more
realistic and less... "talking on the phone to a hyperactive drunk girl" mood.
Thanks for the comments.

An interesting &mdash 01/21/06 - 10:44:45 PM
excellent rhythm section! &mdash 01/21/06 - 11:20:11 PM
Bryan, love this track. To me it's more accessible than some of your
others, and I can relate more to it. Firstly, I love the bass throughout -
inventive and interesting - drumming also impresses, excellent rhythm
section! I know you are coming from somewhere fairly technical
musically, and I'm on the other end of that particular spectrum, but I
really enjoyed the fluidity on this. The addition of the sampled voice
really give this a "human touch" so to speak. Played it 3 in a row - a
rare event! - because I liked it so much. Would love to hear Tadashi let
loose on this!! (not meant as a criticism of your drum track).
Excellent track!

excellent rhythm section! &mdash 01/22/06 - 05:29:12 AM
Great to hear that you loved this track Neil. Part of the reason this is
probably more accessible than my others is for 1, I'm on a break from uni, so
I'm completely free in my choices... and 2, I'm beginning to work out where I
want to go with my music. I want to be writing interesting, unique and
experimental music... but in a form where I can trick other people into
enjoying them :P This piece is a good step in that direction I think.
As to the drum track... because I was capitalising on the electronic aspect,
most of it was just cut and pasted... and in the case of the high hats, they
were intentionally precise and dynamically flat. The only real variation in
them is where I've cut and pasted onto two tracks, a quaver out of sync with
each other... and when I've used the SupaTrigger on them towards the end.
When I do the ANTI-remix, I'll be going a little more free with the drumming
there... though at the same time, this would be a good piece for Tadashi's
Drumming... lots of room for a rhythmic freakout :)
Thanks for the comments.

Cool idea &mdash 01/21/06 - 11:51:07 PM
I enjoyed the whole piece, clear and sound structure, the voice idea is
strange and amusing, clean mix. I disliked some easy "new wavish"
harmonization in the third part (around 1:14). Piano tiny arpeggios are
just as they ought to be given this type of piece...so all is coherent,
maybe they are somewhat cheap, even if well written. I liked very much
the custom synth and its use. Very well with the babbling virtuoso
cadenza before the final reprise :) [ Reply to This ]
Cool idea &mdash 01/22/06 - 05:36:42 AM
Thanks for listening Rik, I promise I'll do some real piano work on the ANTI-
remix... solo's galore or something.

Freaky &mdash 01/22/06 - 07:26:59 AM
Really interesting and very enjoyable.
I immediately liked the bass line and the piano fills - really cool.
Great use of your sister - those sample syllables sound really cool.
Freaky, but cool.
So, yeah - pretty darn cool track. [ Reply to This ]
classy &mdash 01/22/06 - 08:10:51 AM
this is cool - i love using vox as a synth rather than lyrics. this is a really
good track, composer - the first of yours i've heard. i like the d'nb break
3/4 deep.
its fischerspoonerish how you used the vox.
be proud of this one dude.

Clever, Novel and... &mdash 01/22/06 - 11:33:54 AM
Interesting, while still managing to be musical.
Not an easy trick, but managed well in this piece.
A curious and quirky bit of electronica, I could imagine this track fitting
into a big budget sci-fi movie sequence dealing with the programming of
a sophisticated female robot. It suggested that particular mental image
for me. [ Reply to This ]

I found this really enjoyable, especially the vocals, which are just
fantastic. There's lots of delicious creativity in here that I'm really
digging. [ Reply to This ]
Hyperactive Drunk Girl &mdash 01/22/06 - 06:04:46 PM
I have always felt a little too intimidated to comment on your tracks,
lest I end up face down in a pile of drool trying to come up with
something that nears the intelligence of your music.
I always enjoy your music, but I can see that this song probably is
something that's more accessible and something that I could definitely
visualize being played in a club. I'd love to hear it with a higher BPM,
actually; I genuinely thing this is intriguing and different enough that it
could be a dance hit.
See, that didn't hurt. Not an especially intelligent comment, but I do
want you to know that this is astonishingly creative, well-produced and
really nicely arranged. In short, I dug it. [ Reply to This ]

See, its not that hard, whats more you don't appear to be suffering from
shock. And whats even better... I didn't actually know you even listened to
my music until now. Thanks for dropping by.

what happens when you're all grown up &mdash 01/23/06 - 10:44:51 PM
oh my, the phat chills i just got... i'm sorry, that I haven't listened to
your music until now Mister 'Composer' ... My bad, my loss, cause this
is very cool... Very nice. Listening again and just got more chills....
I like your disriptive about how this evolved into being. I have way too
many tunes that didn't end up like I intended, but I just push them to
the side, while pouting like the little ones... Wow, the rewards you get
for being an adult and embracing what was to be... A very imaginative
composition. Loven' the sound of your synth bass - i like the sampled
voice - i like all of the fx - i like the way this grooves on through it -
nice structure - very nice synth work. it just 'all good'!
thank you sir - glad that i ran into you - cyd [ Reply to This ]
Shades of &mdash 01/24/06 - 06:41:39 PM
Laurie Anderson and Peter Gabriel - this is electronica, but with much more texture and counterpoint than you hear anywhere in the darkness. This is the anti-Enya! I felt like I was on a hip travelog, cruising through some counter-culturist paradise. The bass catapults the whole thing. The sudden high-note in the key change sort of throws me, the only sort of sour spot in the piece that just hit me wrong. Would've liked to have heard the drums differently, perhaps fatter to match that excellent bass you've got percolating all over the place. Wicked job, as usual, mate! [ Reply to This ]

I promised I would comment... &mdash 01/25/06 - 02:34:33 PM
and here I am...commenting.
It's a wonderful opening and immediately catches the ear and I really like the short breakdown about half way through and the idea of not using real language I like too. I'm a big fan of supatrigger also.
It certainly is future music and the piano, bass and synthesizer interpaly is great.
For me personally I felt it loses a little direction and I would like to see some form of counter section that would enhance the stunning piano, synth parts and perhaps make them stand out more. In the sense that less is more.
Please don't take that the wrong way. I think it's a clever concept and pushes boundaries and that, for me, is what part of music should be about.
I'm looking forward to the 'anti-mix'
Thanks for sharing.

it's been a while. &mdash 02/14/06 - 07:52:36 PM
for me that is...... but this was lovely. the melodics you constructed were great sounding through the eq/fx........ this is probably the most conventionally coheasive piece i've heard from you..... definitely cool to hear some transition of experimental and semi-traditional sonics...... a wonderful listen as always.
