Description:
This is a sketch to a new song. Had an inspired moment one evening and came up with this. I recorded it to remember what I thought it should go like. I'm putting it out 'cause I'd like to know what you think so far.
Not sure if it may need an opening or a chorus...
Made this for my special friend...
Lyrics:
promise
Thor Oliversen©2006
The minute we met
I felt I'd known you
for a long long time
I guess I gazed at your moves
sort of paralysed
'cause you shone like the moon
and everyone else was pale
Then I noticed you'd look at me
We started to bond
We lost what we had before
We would just have - this one
So I promise you this
I will be what you loved at first
If you promise a kiss
To water my thirst
And now, you come to me
you tell me you're here.
And now, now I see
I want you so near.
Hardware:
M-audio ozone, behringer tube ultragain mic200 (pre amp), Ibanez acoustic guitar, Samic hollow-body guitar (played with no cords, just acoustic in to the microphone), studio projects B1 condensator mic., tokai bass guitar, rain stick (shaker), hohner blues harp.

Nice groove &mdash 01/22/06 - 11:24:46 AM
This is a very sort of sexy, slow groovy sort of melt-into-the-couch
kind of song. I really love the your bass line and I love the way all the
instruments come in after "everyone else was pale". You really are so
strong at playing all of these instruments, it blows me away.
If you're going to do another version, it strikes me that the vocal seems
to be a little thin compared to the richness of the instrument bed. It's
not your singing, which is always very good, but I think it might be
worth looking at the production on the vocal to fill it out and make it
thicker so that it matches the rest of the track.
I like the groovy, grooviness and flow of this, and I don't know if a
chorus would ruin the flow, but I do think it might be nice to have
little bit more variety in the song (along the lines of changing up the
instruments occasionally, the way you did after "pale").
All in all, I really, really enjoyed this, Thor.

Sexy sounds good to me:)
I'm really thankful for your comments on the arrangement Lisa. I agree with all you've pointed out, and wil have it in mind when I work on finishing this one.
I'm uncertain if I should go for a variation in instrumentation or to make a second part to vary it a bit. Think I will have to get some distance from it for a while and come back with fresh ears...
Thanks for listening and your comments. They are very welcome:)

make out music &mdash 01/22/06 - 02:55:41 PM
this is real-deal songwriting, thor. your lyrics are universal - that is i am
sharing similar emotions on a different continent. tasty bass line - great
vocal accompaniment. love the rhodes and rhythm organ. i think the
flanger on your acoustic thins it out a bit much - you may want to
increase the wavelength from /\/\/\/\/ to / \ / \ / \ / \ /
very nice work, thor. this is the first of your work i've heard and i'm
downright impressed.

Cool graphic description of the phaser effect.
I agree with what you point out, and it sort of annoys me when I listen to it again:) But I will re-work this in a while and consider what you've said.
Thanks

Bluesy &mdash 01/22/06 - 03:00:54 PM
This track has a great sound. Love the harmonica! The acoustic guitar
is also well-played. The micing of your vocals is very good. And your
voice has an excellent "pop" feel.
Thanks, Thoddi!

truly hip.....the backgound vocal, hauntingly kool.....i just love the overall
sound......! [ Reply to This ]

Not bad for this, meant as an unfinished sketch, to be CD ready:)
Jazz remix is a good idea. I'm ready to try some techno stuff mixed in my traditional arrangements. Think it will be exiting to mix them styles.

I wasn't really thinking techno....more acid jazz, downtempo.
Go to itunes and look up Thievery Corporation.
You'll see what I mean. They mix electronica with jazz, pop, soul, etc.
Cheers!

Blown away.... dude &mdash 01/22/06 - 07:18:31 PM
I am smiling... cause this is so soulful, especially your singing. Not a
demo.... but a final wrap... take it to the bank. Great atmospheric
guitar playing... the bass is so cool. And I love that little echo vocal...
in the background. But again, you have offered up one inspired
vocal here. I am sure the ice and snow is melting around your house,
'cause this it hot. [ Reply to This ]

hey Toddi, this composition is rich w/ warmth, texture and personal strife... the results of the struggle is what makes this honest and good. it is the real deal and personally, i did just come through the other side of a very similar situation. any efforts to make it good, is all good...
you are one of the most soulful male vocalist here at this site and it is always a treat to drop in on you.
you are getting some very good feedback, all of which if taken head, it would certainly change things up on this and likely make this tune somewhat of a same different interest. the changes could certainly make things better, but i do like it the way it is. i am very open to hearing it w/ some of the alterations that were suggested here though.

Regarding the lyrics, I think all relationships needs watering or attention to grow and to prosper. When time goes by these things can often be neglected...

"Water my thirst" &mdash 01/23/06 - 05:18:33 PM
Nice phrase, then followed with the higher vocal echo of the phrase, as an obliging response to the request - Very nice. I like it without a chorus, but maybe consider some smooth changeup in refrain as long as it holds this same mood - I would hate to have to touch it now, it is very relaxing and makes me want to be with my best friend (wife) right now and promise to her...

Nice &mdash 01/24/06 - 07:00:48 PM
I like that opening - the flow is really nice, cool to be unconventional sometimes. Without a chorus, this is a cool, laid-back musing that doesn't fall into a typical pattern, which sets it apart nicely. The instrumental breaks seem to serve as a bridge between verses - I think this structure sounds very true, it sets up a contemplative vibe and maintains that. Love how dynamic this is, even though it's really low-key - when the instrumentation sort of drops out then kicks back in. To me, this song sounds like breathing, and maybe that's why it's so natural -sounding. Nice vocals and lyrics - the background wails are nice touches. Great start to what is going to be a sweet little tune! [ Reply to This ]
Nice &mdash 01/26/06 - 08:25:11 AM
I am thinking of keeping it without adding a bridge or a chorus. But will work on the dynamics and how the instruments should drop in and out.
Thank you :)

Scandi Soul again! &mdash 01/25/06 - 03:43:44 AM
What a start! Thor, if this is just something you recorded to remember
it, it's very impressive!! Great feel to this - Scandi Soul again! It all fits
nicely - great vox, and everything else just goes with the flow. It
seems to me that you are improving very quickly in your vocals in
particular, and that you are developing a very personalised style of late.
I can imagine this going one step further with a drum track, but
basically really enjoy it as it is.

This what I love about macjams... &mdash 01/25/06 - 07:21:40 AM
...that such amazing music, that unless supported by the money and might of record companies, would never be heard.
This has a lovely vibe and it feels sensual throughout.
I guess that the need for a chorus is dependant as to whether you intend it to fit into an album or be a track in it's own right.
In many ways it would be ashame to punctuate the mood of the song by a chorus, as it has a lovely, dreamy quality to it.
This is testament to a great talent and I look forward to hearing Kontrabeat and wish you the greatest of luck with the project.
I know that they allready have an enourmous advantage with your being on board.

I like this version very much. I herd the new one and wanted to go to the first one and here it. The emotion is dripping in you vocal. And I dig the slowed down thing very much. The saddnes in the lyric is very present in this version. It almost souds like your gonna cry at times. So real.
Thanks for being here on Mjs
Your music waters my thirst...I haven't ben able to find much from the major record lables that does that anymore. Even the Steely Dan new releases don't do it for me the way the early stuff did.
You keep it fresh sounding, and thats very cool.
